Roger Rowe School third-graders Grace Miller and Madison Stine set out to send a veteran to Washington D.C. with Honor Flight San Diego.They were so successful they ended up sending two veterans."That trip for me was the most fantastic trip of my life. I've been all over the world - and Honor Flight was the most fantastic trip I've been on," said George Sousa, a Korean War veteran who served in the U.S. Army.The girls also helped send U.S. Marine Corps Veteran Marshall Varano who also fought in the Korean War."It's great to see young people like this take care of older folks," said Varano.Fundraising is critical for Honor Flight San Diego. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — San Diego County beaches brings in huge crowds, especially during a sunny Memorial Day weekend. Aside from teaching water safety and rescues, this year, Encinitas lifeguards are busy enforcing the public health order.Everyone loves the beach. But no one likes restrictions, especially on a holiday weekend, celebrating those who sacrificed their lives to get us our freedoms. But times are different now. "We are enforcing," Captain Lary Giles of the Encinitas Marine Safety Center said. They have summer lifeguard tower staffing. But this year, they also have a special COVID-team and Sheriff's deputies driving up and down the coastline. "There's a lot of educational contact... Several thousand a day from the team," Captain Giles said. The three main points they drill into visitors are: Masks required, keep a 6-foot social distance, and no stopping or gathering. It gets a bit tricky on the city's 4-foot staircases that take beachgoers to the sand. "That just isn't how it's going to roll. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) — A Fallbrook woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash late Friday.The 56-year-old Fallbrook resident was walking on East Alvarado St. near Alvarado Ct. just before 9 p.m. when she was hit by a vehicle in the eastbound lane, according to California Highway Patrol.She was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Her name has not been released and it's not clear why the woman was in the street.The vehicle that hit the woman fled the area heading eastbound. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- A North County baker who has lost thousands of dollars due to postponed or canceled weddings is trying to help neighbors and keep her business afloat at the same time. Jennifer Duarte said owning a bakery is a dream she’s had since she was a child.“There was a bakery close to my house and the lady worked in the window,” said Jennifer Duarte, owner of Elegance on Display. “I would go and I would just stand there and watch her and said, when I grow up I want to do that.” That’s what she did. She has owned Elegance on Display in Fallbrook for 15 years. With the COVID-19 pandemic—and her specialty being wedding cakes—she’s lost a decent chunk of income.“I had 50 weddings postponed… maybe eight of those are canceling completely,” Duarte said. She has three employees, two of which she had to lay off. She hopes to be able to rehire her employees, but for now, she’s just trying to stay in business. With some items, like eggs, hard to find on store shelves, she’s using her connections to provide a service to her neighbors and also make some up some of her lost income. “We can order bulk through our bakery supplier. Last week, I got flour, sugar, eggs, and butter,” Duarte said. She repackages it in smaller amounts to sell to her neighbors. She said she isn’t making a big profit, but the community has been great lending their support. “So many people realize that there’s not a huge mark up on it. They’ve been tipping or volunteering to help with deliveries,”she added. Duarte is also still making cupcakes, cookies, and small cakes for people who would like to place an order. “I’m just trying to bring a little joy to everybody who’s stuck at home. Cupcakes [and] cookies make everybody feel better,” Duarte said. She makes deliveries throughout Fallbrook, although you have to order ahead. You can also place an order for pick up. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) - An employee at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Parish in Fallbrook has been suspended after allegations of sexually inappropriate dating app chats were revealed in a video released by a vigilante group that conducts stings to catch suspected predators. 10News is not revealing the name of the employee because he has not been charged with a crime.A spokesperson for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego confirmed the employee's suspension, telling 10News the church pastor called the San Diego County Sheriff's Department to report the employee after seeing the video posted on social media Saturday morning.The video was captured Nov. 21 by a group calling itself the "CC Unit" -- "CC" stands for "Creep Catching." The group has posted more than 60 videos over the past year, including one that led to the court martial of a Camp Pendleton Marine.In an interview with 10News, the group's leader, who asked to be identified as "Ghost," said they create profiles on dating sites. When someone reaches out, the CC Unit decoy claims to be a minor. In this particular case, Ghost claimed to be 14. Ghost said the conversation turned sexual, with the employee asking for nude pictures and eventually a meet-up. When he arrived for the meeting at a grocery store, instead of a 14-year-old boy, he was confronted by several men who were recording on their phones. The video stretches for several minutes as the employee tries to evade the CC Unit. "He was denying we had his pictures, we had his chat logs," Ghost said. "I was like 'OK, if you're so afraid, if you don't know what's going on, why don't you call the police because that's what any normal human being would do?'"Ghost admits that law enforcement does not approve of his actions. Criminal defense attorney Guadalupe Valencia told 10News that vigilante groups make the job of law enforcement harder and can jeopardize criminal investigations and prosecutions. "They can cause this person to maybe go free of prosecution because they mishandled the situation. That's a really big danger," said Valencia. Valencia said the CC Unit members could be opening up themselves to criminal charges or civil liability.Despite the criticism, Ghost said he stands by his actions. "They say it makes it harder for them, but I haven't seen them do as much work as I have done over the past year. I think the slaps on the wrist they (sexual predators) get right now is nothing compared to the embarrassment they go through when I expose them," said Ghost. 2532
