SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The 92-year-old San Diego man who pleaded guilty to shooting his son in the head as he slept in his father’s Old Town residence was sentenced to three years of probation. Richard Landis Peck pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter early in 2019. Peck had been facing a murder charge in the death of his 51-year-old son Robert. Peck was arrested in mid November of 2018 after going to a neighbor’s house on the 2300 block of Juan Street to tell her he just shot his son. Peck’s attorney claimed in hearings that his client’s son was an alcoholic who was psychologically abusive toward his father. The elder Peck was described in letters to the court as a kind man and a “quiet gardener” who had never been in trouble with the law. City News Service contributed to this report. 936

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surgeons at UC San Diego are using new technology that offers more options for patients who have complex thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms. UC San Diego Health System is the first on the West Coast to use Dynamic Morphology Correction, a type of 3D imaging. It allows surgeons to compare scans taken before the procedure to real-time pictures during the surgery.Dr. Mahmoud Malas, Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at UC San Diego, says this type of technology uses minimal iodine contrast which lessens the chance of kidney problems for 25 percent of patients dealing with aneurysms.The data from this technology helps surgeons across the country.Dr. Malas adds, " They create prediction models that helps future surgeons perform procedures more accurately." 795

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surveillance video captures a burglar on the move inside a popular restaurant in Mira Mesa, and his crimes may be escalating.Inside the kitchen of T.P. Bahn Bao on Camino Ruiz, the staff is busy making steamed Vietnamese buns, days after an unappetizing discovery. "Scared, anxiety, disbelief," said Travis Nguyen, who owns the restaurant.When she got in on Thursday morning, she found loose change all over and the drawer of the cash register gone. The surveillance video revealed what happened. Just before 3 a.m., a figure is seen crouched low, shining a flashlight into the restaurant. After a few moments, the man pries open the door and walks in."It appeared he used a homemade tool to break the panic bar. It took him only a few seconds to get in," said Lon Holliday of Convoy Street Locksmith, the company that repaired the door.In the video, the man quickly heads to the cash register, removes the drawer and about 0 in cash."He knows what he's doing. I think he's done this before," said Nguyen. After the thief is done in the front - and with a loud security alarm going off - the intruder heads towards the kitchen, where he looks around. He then goes into the walk-in cooler. He apparently doesn't like what he sees and takes off."He's in and out of the restaurant in under two minutes. He's quick," said Nguyen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The battle over the Crossroads of the West Gun Show continued Tuesday in Del Mar.The Board that oversees the fairgrounds is reviewing the show that has been hosted at the fairgrounds for the last 28 years.A pro-gun, second-amendment political action committee collected more than 3,100 letters in support of continuing the show in Del Mar.The letters were given to the board for review and consideration. Michael Schwartz, Executive Director of the San Diego County Gun Owners is pushing is pushing for the board to renew the shows contract with no restrictions or limitations."It took us less than a week to collect all these signatures, we could have gotten more. Some are written by entire families who come to the show every year. It is a family event with almost a 30 year history with Del Mar," said Schwartz. Protesters also made an appearance at the board meeting dressed in orange and asking the board to cancel the shows current contract.The Del Mar, Solanna Beach and Encinitas city councils have approved resolutions calling for a ban on the gun shows at the fairgrounds.Guns can be purchased at the show, but California law requires extensive background checks and a waiting period.The board will make a decision to cancel or continue the gun show at it's board meeting in September. 1329
