NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer and fixer, Michael Cohen, has been returned to federal prison. The federal Bureau of Prisons told The Associated Press on Thursday that Cohen had “refused the conditions of his home confinement.”Cohen’s return to prison comes after the New York Post caught him on camera eating a Manhattan restaurant. The move comes weeks after the 53-year-old was released in late May to serve the remainder of his sentence at home because of the coronavirus pandemic.Cohen pleaded guilty to tax evasion, campaign finance fraud and lying to Congress and began serving his sentence in May 2019, scheduled to remain in prison until November 2021. 699

NEW YORK — Businessman and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang has filed papers to enter the already crowded Democratic field in the race for mayor of New York City in 2021. Yang filed papers with the New York City Campaign Finance Board Wednesday to join the race. Yang, a CNN commentator following his run for president, now arguably has the highest national profile of any of the candidates. The former ambassador for global entrepreneurship under President Barack Obama has not officially announced his run. Yang grew up in Westchester County, went to law school at Columbia and began his legal career in New York City. The NYC CFB said that Yang is joining the city’s -to- matching funds program. You can find out how that works here. The field in the Democratic primary is already awash with candidates with profiles both local and nationwide. Soon-to-be former Congressman Max Rose, City Comptroller Scott Stringer, Brooklyn Borough President Erik Adams, former national HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia, Citigroup executive Raymond McGuire, City Councilmember Carlos Menchaca and former counsel to Mayor Bill De Blasio Maya Wiley are just some of the candidates who have declared on the Democratic side. NEW YORK CITY — The principals and teachers unions are calling for New York City to delay school reopening for at least a month. While most major cities have opted to start the school year virtually, New York City still plans on resuming in-person. Mayor Bill de Blasio responded while touring Village Academy in Far Rockaway, Queens on Wednesday with Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza."Unions will always sound various alarms and unions will say things sometimes in a very dramatic fashion, this is nothing new in New York City," de Blasio said. "But the question is really, what is the mission? The mission is to take care of our kids."Jacob Stebel, a high school film teacher in the Bronx, said a pod system, where students would be taught in groups in a single classroom, won’t work with high schoolers.“Students will be grouped by the classes they have to take together, instead of students moving from classroom to classroom, teachers are moving from classroom to classroom," Stebel said. That would put him in six to seven different classrooms a day with just as many groups of students.“If I have to go into eight different classrooms a day, I have to set up my materials again,” he said.According to the mayor and city’s top educator, with a month to go, they’re still working through the details."One of the things we're working on right now, and, again, with a month to go, is how can we compress things so even at the middle school and high school level, there's less movement," de Blasio said. "And it might look different than a normal school year, but it's the – we just need to get one school year in, in this fashion."De Blasio maintained the first day of school would be Sept. 10.This article was written by Jennifer Bisram for WPIX. 1759

NEW YORK (AP) — Nearly six months after the coronavirus forced its closure, the 9/11 Memorial Museum will be reopening on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks next month. The memorial plaza had been open to the public with social distancing restrictions since early July, but the museum remained closed as did other cultural institutions. The anniversary day re-opening will be reserved for families of those killed in the 2001 attack and the 1993 World Trade Center attack. The public will be able to visit starting Sept. 12. Pandemic restrictions will be in effect, such as a limit of 25% of capacity, and a requirement to wear masks. 648

NEW YORK — Travelers from states with a high rate of coronavirus transmission are now required to provide contact information upon entering New York, or they could face a hefty fine.New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the emergency order during a coronavirus briefing on Monday in an effort to enforce the state’s travel advisory, which mandates travelers from designated states to self-quarantine for 14 days when they arrive in New York.Travelers who do not comply could face a ,000 fine and a hearing for a court-ordered quarantine.Cuomo, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont announced the travel advisory in late June as the number of coronavirus cases began to surge in other parts of the country.“We worked really hard to get the viral transmission rate down, and we don’t want to see it go up,” Cuomo had said of the decision to implement the advisory. The travel advisory applies to states that have an infection rate above 10 cases per 100,000 people or if 10% of the total population tests positive. Both metrics are monitored on a seven-day rolling average. The advisory also applies to tri-state area residents who are traveling back to their home state from areas with a high rate of transmission. As of July 7, there were 19 states that meet the criteria:AlabamaArkansasArizonaCaliforniaDelawareFloridaGeorgiaIowaIdahoKansasLouisianaMississippiNorth CarolinaNevadaOklahomaSouth CarolinaTennesseeTexasUtahThis story was originally published by Lauren Cook on WPIX in New York City. 1525
