Today would be a normal drive to work for Amelia Caceres — except her house is surrounded by police tape. Adrian Perez helped her get out, both still in shock after hearing the brand new bridge outside their home collapsed."We were some of the first people on the front,” Caceres said. “And we saw the cars crushed underneath it was really horrifying, so it was really scary.”“My mind just does not captivate that that happened,” Perez said.Caceres and Perez saw the scene unfold, in disbelief. “It’s kind of like surreal,” Perez said. “Like it was a movie. There was a woman — I guess that she was trapped in the car like under the car .. she was crying hysterically. It was just really strange.”What made it even more strange for these two is that they had just watched the bridge go up days before.“It was just up. It was done,” Caceras said. “And it seemed almost like it was amazing that they had done it so quickly.”The bridge was designed to provide a safe way for students at Florida International University, like Perez, to cross a busy highway."I was really excited about this bridge because I was like finally I won’t have to go through the death trap that is eighth street crossing," Perez said. "Now, that’s kind of ironic."Carlos Devarona lives less than a mile away, and travels the street every day.“You have a blind faith in construction,” Devarona said. “You never think something like this is going to happen.”Watching the scene left him with even more questions, specifically why officials chose to perform a stress test in the moments before the collapse. “Not above live traffic — you don’t do that,” Devarona said. “It just should never happen.”As investigators work to answer the many questions surrounding the collapse, Perez and Caceras, like so many others, wait for answers.“I’m sure that they did what was needed to get done,” Perez said. “I don’t think anyone would do something like this purposefully. There's outrage among Michiganders waiting for unemployment benefits after learning a state employee allegedly teamed up with his barber's wife and stole over a million dollars in unemployment money.This is a horrific case of greed, especially with so many people depending on that money, and now finding out a state employee was benefiting at their expense.“It’s just heartbreaking to think about. It’s just like they don’t have a conscience,” said Melissa Filar.Filar has been waiting 14 weeks for unemployment and after learning a state employee is accused of taking over a million dollars in aid she says, “the hits just keep coming.”“There are a lot of horrible people out there; I think they’re really selfish," Filar said. "They probably see this as a golden opportunity to get rich."Federal prosecutors says 41-year-old Jermaine Rose, a claims examiner with the state unemployment insurance agency, teamed up with his barber's wife, 36-year-old Serenity Poynter, to steal more than a million dollars in unemployment aid meant for people in need.“They’re diverting the money and using it for their own greedy purposes and that is really sad, because right now we are at a time where thousands of people in Michigan are out of work because of the pandemic,” said U.S Attorney Mathew Schneider.The feds say Poynter filed more than a dozen fraudulent claims using different social security numbers, and also different names.“When you steal money from the unemployment system, you’re really stealing money from the people who need it and that money can go to pay for bread, for milk for food,” Schneider said.Rose and Poynter are charged with mail and wire fraud and theft of government funds, punishable up to 20 years. For Michiganders like Filar, still waiting for unemployment, she says more needs to be done to take care of people who are struggling.“I’m like going through my entire life savings and I have no money coming in right now," she said. "I am an artist. I do commissions but it’s peanuts compared to what I have to spend. Tinder is soaring thanks to its new premium membership plan: Tinder Gold.Match Group, which owns 45 dating platforms including Tinder, OkCupid and Match.com, reported on Tuesday that Tinder Gold subscriptions boosted sales 19% from a year ago.Tinder added a record 476,000 paying members last quarter. Now 2.5 million customers pay for Tinder.Match CEO Greg Blatt called Tinder's quarter "fantastic" in a prepared statement.Investors swiped right on the report: Shares of Match Group spiked 11% on Wednesday. Fewer trips to the store, after all, means fewer fill-ups.While that may be good for your wallet, it's bad news for governments who rely on gas taxes to fund transportation construction projects. THE ISSUEFor every gallon of gas you buy, 18 cents goes to the federal government and the Highway Trust Fund. That money is then used to pay for transportation projects around the country. Additionally, each state imposes their own gas tax which can range from 14 cents to 57 cents per gallon of fuel. States use that money to fund transportation projects of their own. Simple economics suggest that when Americans drive less, there will be a loss in revenue for states. States are also losing money with sales taxes, tolls and DMV registrations, which is making a problem even worse. WHAT'S BEING CANCELED"The state is collecting less of that money," Alison Black, Chief Economist with the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, said. Black's organization has been tracking which states are cutting projects.Currently, 14 states have announced project delays or cancellations, valued at nearly .5 billion. These include Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia. There are 19 local governments and authorities that have announced project delays or cancellations, totally more than .54 billion. Ten states or local areas have vetoed, canceled, or postponed legislative initiatives or ballot measures related to transportation funding because of the pandemic.
