 LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The work of Jonas Salk helped cure polio 63 years ago, when the polio vaccine was created. The vaccine changed countless lives, changing the nation. Salk's work pushed further though, helping to create the March of Dimes. An organization that continues to work with the Salk Insitute in La Jolla - so it's researchers can one day eradicate other diseases. 10News Anchor Steve Atkinson spoke with polio survivor Dennis Nutter about his experiences with the disease as a child in the 1940s. "I was five-years-old in 1948. I just remember being extremely tired. I couldn't get up and walk," Nutter said. "Finally, I was just bedridden. The town doctor just said, 'let's just take him to the hospital and with a spinal tap they said it was polio.'"Professor Martin Hetzer is the vice president and chief science officer of the Salk Institute. "The March of Dimes is called the March of Dimes because it was literally...many, very small contributions that allowed people like Jonas Salk to pursue their science," he said. "And in his case, it led to the eradication of and the elimination of polio."The discovery saved millions of lives. "There are so many things that they, children today, don't have to endure that my generation had to," Nutter said.  A Florida man has been charged with 144 counts related to cruelty to animals.The State Attorney's Office has charged 51-year-old Robert David Starkweather after investigators found what 77 cows, 48 calves, and 2 donkeys found on his Hendry County farm.Photos taken by the local Sheriff's Office showed animals as bags of bones."That's got to be the most horrific fate, worst way to go," local animal rescuer Carey Kendzior said. "These are massive animals and it would take months to let it get to that point of cruelty and neglect. There's no excuse."Rescuers came too late for some. There were 13 animals found dead upon arrival."I don't care who you are. No reason for you to be in charge of animals," Kendzior said.The Hendry County Sheriff's Office investigated the case with assistance from both the Lee County Sheriff's Office and the Collier County Sheriff's Office. The animals were sized and were taken from the property and moved to another location.One calf died and five had to be euthanized due to their poor health conditions after being looked at by a veterinarian.Dr. Laura Braun is a vet in Fort Myers. Braun was disturbed when she saw the photos. "That's not how cattle are supposed to look, not even close," she said.Starkweather will be arraigned on May 17. 1302

 SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors will consider an appeal Wednesday intended to block construction of a Hindu temple on county land.Community members are concerned that a proposed Sringeri Vidya Bharati Foundation temple may increase traffic and have a "negative impact on community character," according to the county.The 10-acre building is proposed for a vacant 19-acre plot north of and adjacent to Old San Pasqual Road and south of State Route 78, between Summit Drive and San Pasqual Trail.The county Planning Commission approved a major land use permit for the temple in February.County Planning and Development Services officials recommend that supervisors deny the appeal so construction can move forward. 759

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A young boy was airlifted to the hospital Tuesday night following a hit-and-run. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the crash happened on the 1000 block of Mar Vista Drive around 5 p.m. Lt. Ted Greenawald said a white sedan struck the 12-year-old before leaving the scene. Reports indicate that a second vehicle may have also hit the boy. That driver is said to have remained at the scene. The boy was taken to the Rady Children’s Hospital with injuries to his leg and cuts on his face. The child was conscious and responsive while being treated at the scene, Greenawald said. An initial investigation indicated that the vehicle that first struck the boy was a 2019-2020 white Toyota sedan. “The sedan should have damage to the right mirror and possible front-end damage,” the department said in a news release.
