But while there are some animals on Lapidow’s farm, he’s a very different kind of farmer.Late last year, this 62-year-old farmer gave up his multimillion-dollar New York City law firm, to begin a start-up CBD farm. Things grew almost as quickly as the cannabidiol plants that surround his property.“At the end of 2019, we had a solid year. We had a solid year,” said Lapidow, while looking out toward the apple orchards that surround his property.But when COVID-19 struck, the farm had to shut down for two months. There was no harvesting and no retail sales. Even months after the shutdown, there are still streams of revenue for this farm that have disappeared completely.“People stopped paying their bills. I don’t know what the murder rate of my customers is. I don’t know how many are gone for good,” Lapidow said.After initially laying off all his employees, he has been able to rehire most of them. Sales are still down year-to-year, but COVID is giving some in the industry an unexpected boost.Researchers at Augusta University in Georgia have found new evidence that cannabis-derived CBD may help those suffering from severe lung inflammation that occurs in more serious cases of COVID-19.Legally, because it's not FDA approved, Lapidow can't make claims about what his products do. But many of his customers are using CBD creams, pills, and even bath soaps to help deal with the anxiety so many of us are feeling during the pandemic.“It just binds to receptors in your system and seems to balance things out for a lot of people,” he noted.As for Vermont Pure CBD, they, like so many other small businesses, are just trying to be creative preparing for how COVID-19 might change the landscape of their farm. 1903

NEW YORK CITY — An illegal party on a New York City cruise ship was shut down early Sunday morning, city sheriff's deputies said.The Liberty Belle, which is operated by Empire Cruises, was spotted on Saturday departing from Pier 36 in Manhattan with dozens of people aboard, according to officials and photos of the boat.The person who posted the photo on Twitter said it appeared no one was wearing masks or social distancing.Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer said her office would contact city and state agencies regarding the incident.The Sheriff's Office later said its deputies intercepted the owners and captain of the ship and arrested them for operating an illegal party in violation of social distancing provisions in the city and state emergency executive orders as well as other charges.A request for comment from Empire Cruises was not immediately returned.The company stopped operations in March because of the COVID-19 outbreak and a city emergency executive order, according to its website.This story was originally published by Lauren Cook on WPIX in New York City. 1095

NEW YORK -- A suspended NYPD officer is now facing criminal charges after using an apparent chokehold during a now-viral arrest in Queens last Sunday.Officer David Afanador has been charged with attempted aggravated strangulation and strangulation in the second degree, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said Thursday.The 39-year-old cop, who has a history of complaints against him, was arrested and booked at his own Queens precinct just after 9 a.m. Thursday, according to police.If convicted, Afanador faces up to seven years in prison, the DA's office said.DA Katz acknowledged that body-camera footage shows the officers being cursed at and badgered before the incident. "Everyday, however, police officers find themselves in circumstances that require them to exercise restraint and are charged with de-escalating potentially volatile conflicts," the district attorney said."Even under the most difficult of circumstances...this kind of action is exactly the kind of police conduct that the NYPD has banned and our State Legislature criminalized," Katz added.Afanador was suspended without pay Monday, just a day after being caught on video pinning 35-year-old Ricky Bellevue to the ground and apparently putting him in a banned chokehold in the confrontation on the Rockaway Beach boardwalk.Mayor Bill de Blasio said at the time it was the fastest he'd ever seen the NYPD discipline an officer.The NYPD released the body-cam video of the arrest almost immediately after bystander video of the incident went viral.Prosecutors opened the investigation into Afanador’s actions Monday, saying at the time "there must be zero tolerance for police misconduct."Afanador was acquitted in a prior case stemming from allegations he pistol-whipped a Bronx teenage suspect and broke two teeth in 2014.The officer has had eight Civilian Complaint Review Board complaints filed against him, including use of excessive force and denying medical attention, since he joined the force in 2005.The use of excessive force by police has sparked weeks of protests and rallies in New York City and nationwide.The outcries for police reform prompted Commissioner Shea to shake up leadership at the NYPD. NEW YORK CITY — An Arizona man is dead after jumping out of a freezer at a New York City restaurant and charging at an employee with a knife.Police identified the man as 54-year-old Carlton Henderson of Cave Creek, Arizona.Police say on Sunday an employee at Sarabeth's restaurant in New York City opened the freezer door, and Henderson allegedly ran out screaming, "Away from me, Satan!"The restaurant worker was able to calm the man down but the man went into cardiac arrest and later died at an Upper West Side hospital.No one else in the eatery was injured.  585

Nestle and Starbucks are teaming up to create a "global coffee alliance."Under the deal, Nestle will pay .2 billion to market, sell and distribute Starbucks' packaged products around the world, the companies said Monday.Nestle already has a significant presence in the coffee business with well-known brands like Nescafe and Nespresso. It's now adding Starbucks coffee and tea products to the list.The agreement only covers Starbucks' packaged goods sold outside the US company's stores. It doesn't include Starbucks' ready-to-drink coffee, tea or juices.Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said the deal "will bring the Starbucks experience to the homes of millions more around the world."The deal still needs approval from regulators and is expected to be finalized in summer or early fall this year, the companies said.About 500 Starbucks employees will join Nestle under the agreement, the Switzerland-based company said.It said the Starbucks packaged goods business generates annual revenue of about billion a year.  1031
