SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Flames tore through a Mira Mesa home Wednesday afternoon, causing extensive damage, injuring a firefighter and displacing five residents.The blaze erupted for unknown reasons shortly before 2 p.m. in the 10100 block of Embassy Way, just west of Camino Ruiz, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported.All the occupants of the house were able to safely get outside prior to the arrival of emergency crews, according to SDFRD public affairs.Watch firefighters battle the fire below:Firefighters arrived to find the residence engulfed in flames. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County health officials today reported the death of a San Diego County man due to flu complications, bringing this flu season's death toll in the region to seven.The 73-year-old man died due to influenza A complications on Dec. 16, according to the county's Health and Human Services Agency.The man's vaccination status and medical history are still being investigated. The other six county residents who have died this season had additional medical conditions and either weren't vaccinated or their vaccination status was unknown."Influenza can be deadly, especially for the elderly and people with chronic medical conditions," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Getting a flu shot is the best way to prevent getting sick."At this time last year, 11 county residents had died due to flu complications. Last flu season was the county's worst in nearly 20 years of collecting data, with 342 residents succumbing to flu complications. Residents over the age of 65 with underlying medical conditions accounted for much of that death toll, according to the county.According to the county's weekly flu report for Dec. 16-22, lab- confirmed flu cases rose for the fourth consecutive week, from 290 to 410. That jump is a far cry, however, from the same week last flu season when reported cases spiked to 2,332. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A western harvest mouse found in Escondido tested positive for the potentially deadly hantavirus, San Diego County Vector Control officials announced Friday.The mouse was found during routine monitoring of the area. Since January, Vector Control has collected multiple mice that have tested positive for the virus in areas of north and east county, including Julian, Fallbrook, Bonsall, Boulevard, 4S Ranch, Warner Springs and Potrero.With each instance, county officials have reminded residents to avoid sweeping or vacuuming rodent droppings, which can push the virus into the air. Instead, residents are advised to use so-called "wet cleaning" methods like a diluted bleach spray, disinfectants or a sponge and a mop to clean up wild rodent matter like urine, feces and saliva. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was shot in the hand during a large party near San Diego State University Sunday, police said. Police received reports of gunfire at about 12:30 a.m. on Art Street in the college area. Officers found a car with a bullet hole, but no victim. They found some shell casings at the scene. Later, a man with a bullet wound to the hand showed up at Sharp Grossmont Hospital. Police went to the hospital to interview the victim, but he was uncooperative, police said. 492
