SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Starbucks that played a key role in redeveloping North Park will soon serve its last drink.Carly Clegg is a regular at the Starbucks next to The Observatory North Park."It's a bummer," said Clegg. The collection of notes posted inside the Starbucks tell the story: Customers bidding farewell to their Starbucks. It will close up for good Saturday. The apparent reason for the closing is one regular Robert Green knows well. Several customers who have asked employees why it's closing have been told an increase in homeless individuals are turning off customers, leading to a decline in sales."There are people camped out there all day. I noticed an uptick starting about five years ago," said Green."When I have family and friends that come in, they walk by and say, 'Let's go to another one,'" Clegg added. The closing comes some seven months after Starbucks announced customers would no longer be required to buy something to use the restroom or hang out. Critics said the policy could attract more homeless. Closures like this one are likely to add fuel to the debate."You hate for this business to go out with a whimper," said Green. The Starbucks opened up 13 years ago during the renovation of the North Park Theatre. Green was on the planning committee that approved the redevelopment project."They stuck out their necks. They were one of the first businesses in. They were a catalyst," said Green. Green says the long morning lines he saw at the Starbucks five years ago have disappeared. He hopes the closure won't be sign of things to come."A lot of people have put a lot of work and money into this neighborhood ... It makes you wonder who could be affected next," said Green. In a statement, Starbucks says, "... as part of Starbucks standard course of business, we continually evaluate our business to ensure a healthy store portfolio. After careful consideration, we’ve determined it is best to close the store at 2899 University Avenue in San Diego, CA." 1997

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An early report card on student grades during the pandemic shows cause for concern, as the number of D's and F's are up at schools across California.Nine months into the coronavirus pandemic and some parents are just done with distance learning."Best case scenario I'd like to get my child back in a classroom," Amanda McLean says. Her five-year-old daughter is a student at L R Green Elementary School in Escondido. "There is very minimal interaction with children and teachers in the classroom and yet our children are thriving far better in that setting than they are in zoom."Early grade reports from some secondary schools across the state seem to back up that statement. In November, the Vista Unified School District released its six-week progress report for all of its high schools. The number of F's up more than 200% from last year.In late October, the Carlsbad Unified School District released an eight-week progress report and a similar finding, F grades increased by more than 300%.At one of the largest high school districts in the state, Sweetwater Union High School District D's and F's are also up. District data shows the most impacted are English learner students and students that are socioeconomically disadvantaged."The pandemic is illuminating for us how these traditional practices are so inapplicable and so unhelpful and actually punishing students for things outside their control like a pandemic," Joe Feldman, the head of Crescendo Education Group, said.Feldman said he believes districts need to change the way they grade students, starting with removing the environmental factors students can't control."And then what they have to do is they have to think about, are we able to deliver the instruction in the way that we want and are we able to really accurately assess what students know," Feldman said. Some districts say they released early progress report data as a proactive step to help students with support and intervention immediately. In San Luis Obispo County, Rick Mayfield, the director of learning and achievement for San Luis Coastal Unified School District, said he's concerned about the data he's seeing."Comparing last year's data in full pre-COVID to this year's data during distance learning we're very concerned about what we're seeing," Mayfield said.Preliminary data shows a five to 15% increase in D's and F's depending on the school.Mayfield says educators need to find a balance between rigorous learning and understanding they are in the middle of a pandemic."It's not an option for any district to just say ya well there's nothing we can do about the pandemic and let's just move forward. We're developing a robust learning recovery plan to get kids back up to speed," Mayfield said. The state's second-largest school district, San Diego Unified, says it has not released grade data yet. 2868

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After eight weeks of rehabilitation, SeaWorld San Diego rescue teams release seven rescued sea lions back into the ocean. Six of the sea lions were malnourished pups when they were first rescued. It took rescue crews about two months to help them regain their strength and nutrients needed. The seventh sea lion was discovered on La Jolla Shores with a shark bite wound to his shoulder. Rescue crews tell 10News they watched him for three days and then took him to their veterinarians because they noticed he wasn't using his left fin at all. After x-rays, SeaWorld San Diego vets discovered several broken bones in his front left fin and his left shoulder was snapped in half. Intense rehabilitation over the past eight weeks has him in good condition to return to the wild Tuesday. During the rescue return trip, General Hospital actress and dedicated animal advocate Carolyn Hennesy joined. Hennesy works closely with the SeaWorld San Diego rescue center and often joins them on return trips. As part of tradition, before animals are released, Hennesy said a few words to the sea lions, "Considering myself part of the SeaWorld family, I will say it was wonderful having you." All seven were released into the ocean about an hour from shore. SeaWorld San Diego tells 10News they've rescued over 600 animals in 2019 already including, 137 sea lions. 1379
