SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials Wednesday confirmed the first influenza- related death of the 2019/2020 flu season in San Diego County.The county's Health and Human Services Agency reported that a 74-year- old Chula Vista man died Aug. 15 due to complications from Influenza B. The man, whose name was withheld, also had additional medical issues, according to county health officials.The county tracks flu activity year-round during each flu season, which corresponds with the county's fiscal year from July 1 to June 30. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Tijuana man and his three adult children were indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly smuggling hundreds of illegal immigrants across the border for profit, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Friday.Luis Antonio Mendez-Brahan, 55, remains at large, but his children, Christopher Mendez, 28, and Wendy Monserrath Mendez, 24, both of Wasco in Kern County; and Nancy Jacqueline Suarez, 31, of Madera, were arrested at their homes on Thursday, prosecutors said.Mendez-Brahan is accused of leading the smuggling scheme for nearly a decade, which allegedly operated near the Tecate Port of Entry and "used an ever-changing cadre of spotters, guides and drivers" to move "hundreds of illegal aliens into the United States."Mendez-Brahan is accused of charging between ,000 and ,500 for each person smuggled into the U.S., while his children allegedly used family members in both countries to move the money. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego federal judge has again denied a Chula Vista church's request to challenge the state's COVID-19-related restrictions on indoor worship services.South Bay United Pentecostal Church, which lost a challenge to the restrictions earlier this year when the case went before the U.S. Supreme Court, filed an amended complaint this summer in its ongoing lawsuit arguing that California's restrictions on indoor services and singing are unconstitutional.U.S. District Judge Cynthia Bashant, who denied the church's request for a preliminary injunction in May, also denied South Bay United's latest request in a written order signed Wednesday.Bashant echoed much of her previous reasoning in denying the church's request, though South Bay United's latest complaint and her ruling took into account the shifting state of the virus locally.South Bay United argued in court papers that the state's "scientific pronouncements" are "largely baseless," as by "all reasonable scientific measurements," the COVID-19 health emergency "has ended."Bashant disagreed with the church's assessment of the current picture, and wrote that limitations to indoor worship attendance do not restrict one's ability to attend religious gatherings, as long as they are held outdoors.The judge wrote that the current COVID-19 situation in San Diego County holds that worship services may be held outdoors, with singing and chanting permitted.
