MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico's office for environmental protection says it has filed a criminal complaint against the organizers of the Score Baja 1000 off-road race for damaging protected desert areas. The office said Thursday that some participants in the Nov. 14-18 race departed from agreed-on routes and damaged cactuses and other desert plants in the Valle de los Cirios protected area. Inspectors found damaged choya, agave and cardon plants.Score International spokesman Juan Tintos Funcke says the Reno, Nevada-based company has not received any formal notification from Mexican authorities. Tintos Funcke's statement adds that "as soon as we do we will coordinate ourselves with them in order to attend to it."The race starts from Ensenada in Baja California state. 779
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Authorities in the western Mexico state of Jalisco say they believe three film students missing since last month were killed and dissolved in acid. The Jalisco Attorney General's Office says two men have been arrested and there are arrest orders for four others in the case. The students were abducted March 19 on the outskirts of Guadalajara after working on a film project for school at a location that was apparently being watched by members of the Jalisco New Generation cartel.Authorities said at a news conference Monday that the students were taken to another location where one was beaten to death. Then the other two were killed.Prosecutors say the bodies were taken to a third location, where investigators believe they were dissolved in sulfuric acid. 787

Millions of out-of-work Americans are being surprised by new information. The 0 a week they were relying on receiving through the end of July is set to end a week earlier than they expected.“That is one week less of payments than families get. That is huge. That is the difference between being able to make a car payment, make your rent, put food on the table,” said Heidi Sheirholz.Sheirholz is a former chief economist with the Department of Labor and the current senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute and explained why the CARES Act supplemental is ending so soon.“What it says in the legislation essentially is that it ends on July 31 and we all thought, you know, the end of July, but when you look at the very specific language, what it says is that the last payment will be on or before July 31,” said Sheirholz.Basically, July 31 is a Friday. State unemployment systems end their week on the weekend and pay only full weeks. So, the last full week for a payout will be on July 26. Most states had listed July 31 as the final payment on their respective state’s unemployment website and have scrambled in recent weeks to clarify and adjust the date."It’s just going to create enormous hardship,” she added. Many people will more suddenly go from about ,000 a week in total unemployment benefits, to only whatever their states’ normal unemployment benefits are, which on average is about 5. However, it’s not too late for Congress to act and extend the 0 supplemental. Economist, like Sheirholz, hope they do.“That extra 0 per week for people who are getting unemployment insurance is supporting spending of millions of people and that supports the broader economy,” said Sheirholz. “We estimate that if the 0 additional UI payment is allowed to expire this country will lose over 5 million jobs over the next year.” 1859
Market sentiment is so fragile that news of an arrest is enough to set off a selling wave. The Dow plunged as much as 785 points on Thursday. The index was recently down about 400 points, or 1.3%. The S&P 500 lost 1.1%, while the Nasdaq fell 0.3%.The arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in Canada at the request of the United States renewed doubts about the US-China truce. The latest sign of tension between Washington and Beijing also sent shudders through global markets. Hong Kong's Hang Seng plunged 2.5% overnight, while European stock markets declined sharply as well. Germany's DAX nearly closed in a bear market, down nearly 20% from its January closing high.Companies like Apple (AAPL) and Boeing (BA) that have significant exposure to China fell sharply. Other trade-related stocks like Broadcom (AVGO) and Harley-Davidson (HOG) were also under pressure. Alibaba (BABA), the Chinese e-commerce giant, tumbled 3%. The Dow and S&P 500 have once again turned negative on the year. The S&P 500, down 9% in the fourth quarter, is on track for its worst quarter in seven years. The arrest of Meng -- the daughter of the founder of one of China's most important companies -- serves as a fresh reminder that the United States and China remain in a trade war, despite the ceasefire reached last weekend in Argentina. Tariffs already imposed remain in place and new ones loom if talks fail to result in a breakthrough or at least an extension within 90 days."This comes at a truly delicate time," Win Thin, global head of currency strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman, wrote to clients on Thursday. "We think this will force China to take a more aggressive and confrontational approach with the US." 1720
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky attorney general's office says two long-rifle shell casings were found in and near Breonna Taylor's apartment after a police drug raid that left her dead. It's the first time these specific shell casings have been mentioned by authorities investigating Taylor's death in March. One was found inside and the other outside Taylor's apartment. The notice of the two shell casings was filed in former Officer Brett Hankison's wanton endangerment case. According to the Associated Press, the one-page court filing does not say why the shell casings would be favorable to Hankison’s defense.Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron didn't mention the long-rifle casings at a September news conference announcing the indictment against Hankison, the AP reported.Another officer at Taylor's apartment that night was Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly. On Friday, Mattingly filed a counterclaim suit against Taylor's boyfriend, who previously had sued the police department. According to the Courier-Journal, the complaint is a countersuit in response to a lawsuit brought on by Walker.Mattingly was shot in the leg by the boyfriend during the raid. 1173
