Others include 30 cents in Virginia, 84 cents in Colorado and .33 in Florida.“Raising taxes is the quickest way to reduce tobacco, particularly among young people and the poor, whom the tobacco industry preys,” said Matthew Myers, who heads up The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.He said there is a direct link between higher cigarette taxes and lower smoking rates.“The advantage of tobacco taxes is they reduce tobacco use more effectively, more efficiently and more predictably than any other single tactic, while also raising revenue for government,” Myers said.Yet, critics have pointed out that lower-income smokers get hit the hardest by taxes like these and a U.S. Surgeon General report earlier this year, found they have the least access to programs to help them quit.Still, at least one academic study, “Tax Burden on Tobacco,” shows the connection between higher taxes and lower smoking rates. It looked at the price of cigarettes and their sales from 1970 to 2017. The findings? The higher the cigarette price, the fewer packs sold.“In an ideal world we would be down to zero,” Myers said. “We’re a long way from there.Back in New Jersey, Pete Quinto said if the tax goes up as much as proposed, he might finally quit.“Most definitely,” he said. “I’m not paying all that money.” New Jersey has not raised its cigarette sales tax in a decade. Scientists at the Department of Defense are working on giving families of troops who were killed in action some closure.For Brent Stevenson, advances in technology allowed him to honor his uncle.Stevenson ‘s uncle William Bruesewitz died in the attack at Pearl Harbor attack at the age of 26.This month, his family finally laid him to rest 77 years after he died.“Everybody is overjoyed and thrilled that we’re able to do this and very much humbled and honor that we’re able to do it at Arlington National Cemetery,” said Stevenson.Bruesewitz served in the Navy and died during an attack on his battleship, the USS Oklahoma.His remains were recovered, but could not be identified. For decades, he was buried as an unknown soldier. But advances in technology allowed the military to re-examine his remains and finally make a positive identification.“It was surprising. It was a blessing. It was really quite humbling,” said Stevenson.“Every year it is our goal to identify at least 200 of these service members. But we would like to get that number higher if we can find ways to do it,” said Dr. John Byrd, the chief scientist from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.Over the years, Byrd and his team have found new ways to use advanced DNA techniques to identify remains and they continue to make progress.“They have developed over and over again improved extraction protocols that allow them to get DNA out of bones where yesterday they couldn’t,” said Byrd.But Byrd admits the race against time, not technology, can be the biggest obstacle as older generations pass away.“It’s one of the greatest challenges of all and this is how do you find close or closet family members of missing service man from 1944,” said Byrd.Despite the challenges, the mission moves forward to give a name and dignity to thousands of fallen soldiers.“All of this work, ultimately, is being done so that this service member can have his name back and his family will know what happened to him,” said Byrd.“It’s going to bring a lot of comfort to a lot of families just like it has ours,” said Stevenson. 2097

PETERSBURG, Fla. — A high school football player in St. Petersburg, Florida, is brain dead after collapsing during Friday night's game, according to the teen's mother.After a group tackle, 17-year-old Jacquez Welch of Northeast High School never stood back up. Paramedics rushed Welch to Bayfront Hospital where doctors discovered a pre-existing brain condition that no one knew about. They say Jacquez was born with arteriovenous malformation, also known as AVM. It's an abnormal connection between the arteries and veins in the brain. Marcia Nelson, his mother, was in the stands when it happened. She said in a press conference Monday that her son is brain dead and his collapse had nothing to do with the sport."I don't want anybody to be scared of sports," Nelson said. "It just happened to him at an early age, doing what he loved to do."Nelson said the family is working on making her son an organ donor to seven people. The family plans to take Jacquez off life support Monday night after an honor walk at 10 p.m. at Bayfront Hospital. "I am content. This is not anything I could control," Nelson said calmly. Nelson said Jacquez was a giving person and he would be proud that his organs will be used to save other lives. Nelson says football was his passion.
