He had an opportunity earlier in life to meet some of the last living Civil War veterans, but he didn't go.Now 100-year-old Sidney Walton is giving people across the country the chance to meet one of the last living World War II veterans.Walton has been on a mission to visit all 50 states over the past year and a half, and he passed the halfway mark earlier this month. He's made it to 26 states, meeting with governors and anyone who will hear his story.He wants people he meets to remember the sacrifice World War II veterans made, especially as there aren't many left. It could potentially bring in anywhere between .5 to .5 billion in new funding to local schools and governments, according to the Legislative Analyst’s Office.Brandon Foster is a small business owner in Oceanside. Even though he rents the space where his two gift shops are located, he is against Prop. 15.“We already have been told by our landlords, if that passes, they will be passing on that cost to us,” Foster said. “The landlords, a lot of them, have vacancies and things like that where they are struggling themselves. I understand why they need to pass that cost onto us.”The ad for No on Prop. 15 highlights a small business owner who said he had to close twice during the pandemic. The ad said Proposition 15 would raise “property taxes and rents on small business and they admit homeowners are next.”The change in property tax assessment would apply only to commercial or industrial properties valued at more than million. It would tax those properties at current market value rather than when it was bought.Residential and agricultural properties are not affected under Prop. 15.“They are very emotional, as ads are supposed to be,” said Lynn Reaser, chief economist at Pt. (KGTV) - A group of Massachusetts police officers and firefighters are being hailed as heroes after coming to the aid of a choking puppy this week.North Reading resident Megan Vitale stormed into a police station Sunday telling officers her 9-week-old Saint Bernard puppy, Bodhi, was choking on food. An acquaintance came running in with Bodhi shortly after, the puppy limp and unresponsive in his arms, surveillance footage from the station showed.A group of officers came running out to begin administering first aid to the puppy. A group of North Reading firefighters also arrived at the station to help with back blows and chest compressions. RELATED: Beloved lizard missing from Spring Valley pet storeAfter 10 minutes, the food blockage was finally dislodged and Bodhi was revived."Ultimately, a life was saved thanks to rescuers falling back on their training and remaining calm. Even though we are not faced with this kind of incident every day, the officers reacted just as they would in any emergency situation," North Reading Police Chief Murphy said. “We are hopeful that the puppy will make a full recovery."Firefighters used a special oxygen tank designed for pets to help Bodhi get breathing again."Many of our firefighters have pets at home in their own families. We do not get to choose the emergency situation that comes our way, so it is important that first responders be prepared for anything," Fire Chief Stats said.Bodhi was able to leave with Vitale to receive follow-up care from a veterinarian, according to the police department. 1599

(KGTV) -- A former Marine has been sentenced to 17 years in state prison for driving drunk the wrong way on state Route 163 in Mission Valley, then crashing head-on into another car killing two UCSD medical students.Jason Riley King, 24, was convicted of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.According to testimony throughout the trial, several people told King that he was too drunk to drive, but he got behind the wheel anyway, driving the wrong way on state Route 163 and crashing into the Prius.The 2015 crash killed 23-year-old Madison Cornwell and 24-year-old Anne Li Baldock.  Three classmates also riding in the Prius were seriously injured.The crash inspired a new law in the state of California that will require all bartenders and servers to take a class on how to spot someone who’s had too much to drink.Following the crash, classmates of the victims worked with Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher (D-San Diego) on assembly bill 1221, also know as the Responsible Beverage Service Training Program Act of 2017.The law was approved by Governor Jerry Brown on October 15, 2017 and goes into effect July 1, 2021. 1164
