When it comes to car sales in California, the Golden State is looking to get a little greener.“Most of our shoppers are looking for a hybrid,” said Chris Wesney, general manager of McCarthy’s, an independent car dealership in San Luis Obispo, California.Wesney says his team sells about 75 vehicles a month with electric vehicles making up 20% of those sales.“That increases every year, year over year,” he said adding he expects that number to increase even more after California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent executive order, which would ban the sale of gas-powered vehicles by 2035.“There’s a lot to learn when it comes to buying electric cars,” Wesney said. “The problem that I foresee for some vehicles dealers is the repair facilities.”The state’s mandate has industry leaders shifting gears, and it’s raised questions inside Cuesta College’s automotive technology department.“To just simply say, ‘yes, we’re going to do this’ without looking at all other implications kind of makes me a little nervous,” said John Stokes, division chair of engineering and technology at Cuesta College.Stokes says he supports this decision to move away from fossil fuels in theory, but in reality, he’s questioning everything from how to replace gas taxes to adding enough related infrastructure.“There are so many things that are still question marks on how to be able to do this,” he said. “Do we have the production to satisfy the electricity? Do we have the production for the battery capacity?”Other auto industry leaders are also speaking out about this proposed change.“I certainly understand big, bold ideas but only when they’re affordable,” said Cathy Reheis-Boyd, president of Western States Petroleum Association.Reheis-Boyd says right now there are 736,000 electric vehicles in California compared to 36 million cars and trucks that run on gas and diesel. She believes that taking drivers’ choices away in 15 years could cost many Americans their jobs.“I hope we can change our mindsets that’s to collaborate and bring these brilliant minds so California does have a path,” she said.A path that leads drivers back to the car lot where dealers like Wesney are preparing for the fuel of the future.“It will just be interesting to see how the powergrade and everybody adjusts to the increase demand for electricity,” he said. 2334
What you drive impacts what you breathe.With all kinds of vehicles emitting all kinds of pollutants into our air, many Americans are now suffering from related health problems.“What I feel is tightness all around my chest,” said Karen Jakpor ,M.D., MPH. “Pretend you had to breathe through a straw.”Jakpor lives in California’s Inland Empire, an area east of Los Angeles, that has some of the worst air pollution in the country.After years of breathing in pollutants, Jakpor developed asthma so severe that she lost her clinical career.“That was very devastating to me when that first happened,” she said.Jakpor has since made a career change and is now advocating with the American Lung Association with a goal of getting all internal combustion engines off the road within the next three decades.“There’s so many people who are affected and people dying and yet they don’t even know that air pollution played a role in their medical condition,” Jakpor said.In its new report titled “Road to Clean Air,” the American Lung Association encourages a nationwide shift to electric vehicles by 2050.“Transportation is driving the unhealthy air that affects half of all Americans,” said William Barrett, lead author of this report.He predicts a transition to zero emission technology, for all transportation across America, could save countless lives and billions of dollars.“In the year 2050 alone, we could generate billion worth of public health benefits and approximately 3 billion worth of climate change benefits,” Barrett said.The move to reduce the use of fossil fuels has been an ongoing issue for decades.Now, however, health experts say the need for change is becoming more urgent each day.“Hopefully this report helps move the needle,” said Meredith McCormack, M.D., MHS, associate professor of medicine at John Hopkins University.She says prolonged exposure to car exhaust fumes can cause health issues ranging from heart attacks to lung cancer.To make a national changeover to electric vehicles a reality, McCormack says communities need help from leaders at local, state and federal levels.“For all of us as individuals, we also have our own ability to impact the future,” she said.A future of battery powered cars, however, does come at a cost.For example, a 2020 Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid costs about ,000 more than a 2020 Toyota Corolla with a four-cylinder engine. But a study by the U.S. Department of Energy found that while plug-in vehicles could cost more upfront, they make up for it in savings with lower fuel costs and reduced emissions.That's something Jakpor believes is a small price to pay to improve America’s air quality.“We don’t want to leave the next generation with even worse disasters,” she said. 2753
WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — West Palm Beach says the number of police cars that had to be pulled off the streets due to engine failure has risen to 49.City Administrator Jeff Green said at this point they believe a tainted fuel shipment in the middle of March is to blame. All of those cars had traces of biodiesel in their tanks, which are meant for unleaded only.West Palm Beach Police Public Information Officer David Lefont said it is not impacting public safety since the agency is supplementing with rental cars.“We have captains driving around in minivans,” Lefont said.Seventeen patrol cars have gotten new engines and are back in service.The other affected cars are non-marked cars.Green said Miami-Dade County police reported they had to pull 120 cars with the same issue.In West Palm Beach the cars affected are all Ford, which is why the automaker is investigating the case as well.But Green said at this point they believe it was the fuel shipment. The lawsuits are what's known as rule 3.740 collection cases."A lot of worrying after that, like oh my god, what am I going to do," said Chris Madden. "Stressed out now and just didn't need it."In February, Madden was served with a lawsuit from a debt collection company.During an interview with 10 News that month Madden said he needed to borrow money a few years ago to keep his car. He turned to a lender that could get him money quickly."I figured it was going to be a high-interest rate, like 22% or something," he said. "I started making the payments on it, and then I found out more about it."Madden admits he didn't do a great job getting all the details when he took the money, saying the interest rate wasn't clear. When he finally did look at the fine print, he saw the interest rate was 135%. Court documents show a ,000 loan turned into ,000 owed."They were threatening to take any assets that I have, garnish my wages," Madden said.Madden said he stopped paying.
