SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighting cameras are blanketing California, shattering its goal of installing 650 cameras across California by 2022, thanks to the efforts of a UC San Diego professor and his team.The camera system, called ALERTWildfire, came from a need to confirm the ignition of a fire, and coordinate assets to be the most efficient and safe for the community.Geology Professor Neal Driscoll at UC San Diego is the Co-Director of ALERTWildfire and said just a couple of years ago it was a slow process confirming a fire sparked in the county."We’d have to send an engine to a mountaintop or launch an aircraft to verify ignition," Driscoll said.That wasted valuable time. ALERTWildfire allows fire command centers to find and assess a blaze with a few clicks on a computer.Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said they look for key information from the cameras, "really just trying to hone in on where this fire is, what its potential is and who might need to be evacuated."The system launched in 2017 and now San Diego has 35 cameras across the county.The cameras pan, tilt and zoom on command and have a time-lapse function."The technology isn’t just good situational awareness, it’s also using that data and that information in real-time to evacuate people and save some more lives," Shoots said.Driscoll said they are continuing to grow the program, "locally I think we’ll cap out at 45-50."Shoots said they're working to grow to more than 1,000 cameras across the state by 2022 and Driscoll hopes to expand to other states like Colorado and Idaho.Driscoll advises the public to get familiar with the website, so in case of an emergency, you can be aware of your surroundings and evacuate safely.Driscoll also advised the public to RAP: Reduce risk, Activate your alerts, and Practice your plan. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite the pandemic, Veterans Village of San Diego held its annual Stand Down event that helps hundreds of veterans facing homelessness every year.From a glance, this year’s event may seem different. Not as many people were there and stations were more spaced out than normal. But the mission remained the same, reaching out to veterans who are at risk or homeless.Darcy Pavich, the Stand Down director, says the goal is to provide Veterans with the resources they need. Whether it’s housing services, medical referrals, or employment services."It’s difficult for them right now to connect with the services because so many doors are closed," says Pavich.What is also different this year is making sure COVID-19 health guidelines are followed. From requiring masks, to hand sanitizing, and making sure everyone practiced social distancing.This took a lot more planning and preparation to make sure Veterans and Volunteers stayed safe.But even with the changes, Pavich says the simple gesture of reaching out to Veterans made a big impact on those that showed up. "It brings a smile to them and they may not have a lot to smile about right now," she said. "I can never find a good reason why a Veteran should not be housed, safe, and comfortable in their own life." 1292

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fifty years ago this week, millions of Americans sat glued to their televisions as the first humans prepared to step on the moon.The defining moment was filled with both excitement and tension, happening less than a decade after President John F. Kennedy set the ambitious goal. "I was a young fighter pilot in Germany at the time, and when I heard him say we were going to go the moon within the decade of 1969, that was eight-and-a-half years, I said man, I mean, we can't possibly do that," said Charlie Duke. Little did Duke know he would have a front-row seat to the historic mission, becoming an astronaut in 1966.During the Apollo 11 mission, Duke served as Capsule Commander (CAPCOM), meaning he communicated directly with the Apollo 11 astronauts. Duke says after the July 16, 1969 launch everything was initially running smoothly."We gave them a-go for descent, and they started the engine and then almost immediately we started having this series of problems," remembers Duke.Communications were going in and out, and the landing computer was signaling an overload."The tension with all of these problems building up began to mount in Mission Control so the closer we got to the ground, or to the moon, the more tense it became," said Duke.The crew was off target for the landing, forced to fly manually to find a safe spot to touch down at, with only minutes left of fuel. "It was really tense, so you hung on every foot of altitude and every second at the end there, but we made it, with a few seconds to go," said Duke. Duke says once he heard the following words from Neil Armstrong it was as if a big balloon popped, dissolving all of the tension in Mission Control. "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed," Armstrong said as the Eagle landing module reached the moon's surface on July 20."Roger, Twank ...Tranquility, we copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue here. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot!" Duke replied.Duke was honored by the San Diego Air & Space Museum for his role in the Apollo 11 mission, as well as his lunar landing in 1972."When I stepped on the moon, it was, I'm on the moon. The beauty of it, the wonder, and excitement and the adventure, all of those emotions and feelings rolled into one," said Duke.The San Diego Air & Space Museum will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on Saturday, June 20. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Homeowners in Chula Vista's Eastlake III Community Association are fighting back against proposed parking updates for the HOA. If passed neighbors would be required to park their cars in the garage before parking in their driveway or on the street.The Board of Directors distributed proposed updates to the Community Association Handbook for a homeowner review and comment; and will vote on Tuesday, August 20.Among the proposed changes:Street parking is permitted only after all garage spaces, and driveway spaces, are utilized to its maximum designed capacityThe Association's management company is permitted to perform a garage inspection of a residence to ensure compliance with the Association's governing documentsHomeowner Jose Esquer believes an inspection would be an invasion of people's property."They seem to want the right to inspect your garage, and that's private property. What I have in my garage shouldn't be anybody's business, but whoever is inside my house. I have a problem with them trying to police what we do once inside our house," said Esquer. Becky Niemiec already parks her car in the garage but still believes the changes would be an overstep. "We don't have attics, we don't have basements, we have no storage, people should be able to use their garage however they want to," said Niemiec.Niemiec says the issue has drawn a lot of debate on Nextdoor. She says while some argue the changes could help beautify the neighborhood, she believes that group is in the minority. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters have extinguished the fire that caused a hotel near Harbor Island Park to be evacuated Wednesday afternoon. Firefighters say the two-alarm fire broke out at the Sheraton on the 1300 block of Harbor Island Drive. No one was injured, but the fire, which took place in the hotel's elevator shaft, caused at least 0,000 in damage. Firefighters were alerted to the fire after they say people reported heavy smoke coming from the elevator shaft.At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown.  551
