SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former gang member who turned his life around in stunning fashion just got accepted to four different universities, including UC Berkeley and UC San Diego. 10News first met Apollo in 2010, as he and several others went to court to get off a gang injunction list for an Oceanside street gang.  An injunction prevents gang members from doing activities in certain areas, like associating with each other.  At that time, Apollo told us he had been out of the gang for several years after four years inside as a teenager."What hurt the most is hurting my mother... You want to amount to something, so (when i decided to get out) I'm trying to do this for her," said Apollo.Apollo was removed from the list about a year later, which is a rare feat. Among the requirements: written explanations, background checks, and approval from prosecutors and a judge.Since then, he has gone on to Palomar College, earned awards at speech and debate competitions, and at the age of 30, he just got accepted to four schools, including UC Berkeley and UCSD.  He's leaning towards Berkeley, though he isn't sure he can pay for it.  He's hoping to have a career in communications or social welfare so that he can help his community."Sometimes I can't believe it and sometimes I feel I should be doing more.  You want to leave something for them to look at, to hopefully inspire them to do more and succeed," said Apollo. 1473

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A car being pursued by the California Highway Patrol crashed in the Carmel Valley area early Friday morning.Around 12 a.m., CHP officers attempted to pull over a 2020 Toyota Camry for speeding on southbound Interstate5 near Del Mar Heights Road, but the driver refused to stop.Officers say the driver was traveling at 135 mph.The car tried to exit on Carmel Valley Road, but when the driver attempted to get back on the freeway, she lost control on the on-ramp and crashed.Officers took six women into custody from the car, including the driver.It's unclear why they chose to flee from CHP officers.Paramedics later responded to evaluate minor injuries. 681

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego-based U.S. Navy SEALs have been charged in connection with the 2017 execution of a detainee in Iraq.SEAL officials told the Navy Times that Lt. Jacob "Jake" Portier faces an Article 32 hearing on suspicion of covering up a string of war crimes allegedly committed by Special Operations Chief Edward "Eddie" Gallagher.The Naval Criminal Investigative Service probe involves the death of a wounded Islamic State fighter near Mosul, Iraq in May 2017, the Navy Times reported.Prosecutors allege Gallagher stabbed and killed the wounded man, posed for a photograph next to the body and opted to complete his re-enlistment ceremony next to the corpse, bringing "discredit upon the armed forces."Gallagher is also accused of shooting two non-combatants in separate incidents near Mosul, the Navy Times reported.An MCAS Miramar spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.Gallagher was arrested on Sept. 11 and is being detained at the Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, under Rules for Court-Martial 305, the Navy Times reported.Portier, who is accused of dereliction of duty, was not present at the time of the alleged killing, the Navy Times reported. He was Gallagher's platoon leader during the deployment and told investigators he learned about the alleged war crimes only after he was told about them by a special operator first class."Naval Special Warfare does not comment on specifics of an ongoing investigation in order to preserve its integrity, however all credible allegations of criminal activity are taken extremely seriously and thoroughly investigated," Naval Special Warfare spokeswoman Cmdr. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Girls Empowerment Camp put on by the San Diego Fire Department started Saturday despite some controversy a few months ago. The camp teaches girls what it takes to be a firefighter. The girls learn how to pull hoses, climb ladders, and climb out of windows just like firefighters do on the job. In February, attorney Al Rava sent a letter to the city attorney on behalf of his client, Rich Allison. The letter claimed that the camp was unwelcoming to boys solely based on their sex. RELATED: Girls empowerment camp rescheduled after abrupt cancellationThe camp was canceled, but days later Mayor Faulconer issued a statement saying the camp would go on. The girls are thankful the camp is back on.
