SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man who provided alcohol to an underage drinker who subsequently caused a crash that killed her passenger was sentenced to 240 days in custody, the City Attorney's Office announced Wednesday. Fraidoon Ahmad gave alcohol to Yolanda Lozano and Mabel Bahena, both 19, on Feb. 17, 2017. Lozano later drove while drunk and collided with a truck on Interstate 15, killing Bahena. Lozano pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and was sentenced to one year in custody, with Bahena's family asking a judge for leniency as the two women had been best friends since grade school. Ahmad pleaded guilty in May to misdemeanor charges of furnishing alcohol to a person under 21 and furnishing alcohol to a minor causing great bodily injury and death. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As the San Diego region prepares for possible cases of novel coronavirus, the Health and Human Services Agency reported Wednesday that even with six influenza-related deaths recorded last week, the flu season appears to be winding down.A total of 86 San Diego County residents have died from the flu so far this season, and of the half dozen deaths recorded last week, only one actually happened last week. All of the people who died had underlying medical conditions.That total is more than last flu season's entire toll.As of this time last year, the county had recorded 46 flu deaths. Last season's deaths totaled 77."Influenza appears to be declining, but people should continue getting vaccinated as the flu could last until April or May," said said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "The vaccine is safe and effective and the best tool we have to prevent influenza."Last week, Chairman Greg Cox, County Board of Supervisors, recommended everyone get a flu vaccine to protect themselves and their family, and reduce the potential strain on the healthcare system, which may be impacted by novel coronovirus concerns.There have been a handful of novel coronavirus cases in San Diego County and as of yet no deaths."It's important for everyone to educate themselves and their family and be prepared ...," Cox said. "It's also important for people not to panic as the risk for this new virus and the disease that it causes continues to be low."All but three of the people who have died from influenza this season had underlying medical conditions, according to the HHSA, which reported that the total number of reported cases decreased again last week to 637 -- 135 fewer cases than the previous week. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A pedestrian was struck and killed by a BNSF freight train at the Old Town Transit Station in San Diego, authorities said this morning.Officers responded to the station, in the 4000 block of Taylor Street near Congress Street, at 9:25 p.m. Friday and found the victim dead at the scene, according to Deputy Brian Abraham of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.The age, gender and name of the victim were not disclosed.Anyone with information about this incident was asked to call the sheriff's department at 858-565-5200. 553

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego molecular diagnostic company announced Thursday it has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to fund development of its coronavirus diagnostic test, which the company says would provide results in about 30 minutes.Mesa Biotech Inc. will receive both 1,330 in funding and "technical expertise" from the HHS's Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority -- or BARDA -- to complete developmental work needed to obtain Emergency Use Authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.The FDA's emergency authorizations fast-track unapproved medical products for use during a public health emergency.Mesa says its Accula SARS-CoV-2 test utilizes throat swabs to detect SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19."As the coronavirus situation escalates and the demand for testing far exceeds capacity, we are encouraged by the support of HHS in the development of our Accula SARS-CoV-2 Test," said Hong Cai, Mesa Biotech's co- founder and CEO."Our test, which was developed to enable rapid responses to global pandemics, will significantly compress the sample-to-result timeframe with a laboratory-quality test at the point-of-care," Cai said.
