SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three Scripps Health locations will temporarily close this week to give the system more staffing flexibility amid the coronavirus pandemic.Scripps Clinic Coronado, Scripps Clinic Santee, and Scripps Clinic Bariatric and General Surgery in Hillcrest will close in order to give the medical system "the ability to move people and resources to where they are needed more.”Scripps will redirect patients from those sites to other locations.RELATED: Sharp temporarily closing multiple locations amid coronavirus outbreak“The coronavirus pandemic has triggered many changes in our lives and forced organizations of all types to alter the way they provide services to their customers,” said Chris Van Gorder, Scripps president and CEO. “These latest changes at Scripps give us more flexibility in how we staff all of our clinics and hospitals as this health pandemic continues to unfold, and they give us the ability to move people and resources to where they are needed more.”The health system said patients can also use Scripps' telemedicine video service instead of scheduling an in-person consultation.RELATED: Nurse urges people to turn over N95 masks to San Diego hospitalsOther Scripps outpatient sites were also being reviewed for possible changes in operation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Blood Bank is asking for convalescent plasma donations from patients that have recovered from COVID-19. The plasma is used at local hospitals to help fight COVID-19. Although not a cure for the virus, the plasma has proved to be effective for some patients. The blood bank says they are running low on convalescent plasma because requests from hospitals have gone up. The process of donating takes a little more than an hour, including the check-in process. To donate plasma you must have had a positive COVID-19 test, recovered from the virus and be symptom free for 28 days. Donations are by appointment only. One plasma donation could help as many as 3 to 4 people fight the virus. If you'd like more information about donating, click here. 786

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — These aren't your average sand castles.Every year at San Diego's Port Pavilion, tons of sand of hauled in and dumped onto the Broadway Pier. There, a heap of sand sits waiting to become something more. When master sand sculptures from around the globe finally get their hands in the sand, a radical transformation begins.GALLERY: Works of art made from sand at US?Sand Sculpting ChallengeThe U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and Dimensional Art Expo is an invite-only competition for sculptors, six from the U.S. and six from other countries. Each artist brings their own vision, artistic sensibilities, and talent to the makeshift sandbox.Sculptures can reach up to 15 ft. tall and weigh more than 10,000 pounds in some cases. Perhaps just as astoundingly, all it takes is nothing more than sand and water (aside from an incredible talent.)For four days, San Diego's waterfront will host competitions between sculptors with more than ,000 in prize money at stake.MORE: Other events happening this Labor Day weekend in San DiegoReturning in 2018 will also be a team challenge, comprised of teams that won the former sand sculpting competition when it was hosted in Imperial Beach from 2000 to 2011.In addition to the competition, family-friendly activities such as live entertainment, a giant sandbox for kids, and rides will be on hand. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There's no better way to observe San Diego's history, and perhaps future, than through public murals throughout the county. While many of these murals serve as a great boost to social media profiles, they often double as a visual journey showing our region's past and what we hold dear. One thing San Diego is often associated with, happiness. Our scenic coastline, diverse communities, and bevvy of sunshine throughout the year can be thanked for that. But for those trying times, the "Smile, You're in San Diego" mural at 1st Ave. and C St. serves as a reminder. The mural's artists, Pheobe Cornog and Roxy Prima of Pandr Design Co., we tasked with the design by the San Diego Tourism Authority."They originally just wanted a smiley face. But we wanted to take it a little bit further and create something that people would get excited about," Prima says.Instead of a smiley face, the mural depicts a canvas of color not only for those ready to pose, but for those stuck in traffic to enjoy.RELATED: San Diego's graffiti arts park continues to change lives 20 years later"We wanted something bright and happy and colorful so when you're on your commute you can be happy seeing this piece," Prima added. But of course, it's also a tourist destination nestled in downtown for those who find it."People from far away places that come to San Diego and seek this mural out now and will message us, 'Oh, I was here from Philly,' or wherever," Cornog said.RELATED: Convoy Street rooster mural highlights efforts for future neighborhood archwayBut not far, Chicano Park displays tons of public art showing Chicano history and culture in the Barrio Logan neighborhood. The legs of the Coronado Bay Bridge are covered in vibrant pieces, ranging from pieces like "Founding of Mexico City," "Birth of La Raza," and "Female Inteligencia."And over in Liberty Station another piece of local history at the "Greetings from US Naval Training Station" mural. Inside each letter of the postcard design is an era of the training station's history, from US Navy facility to public market."SeaWalls: Murals for Oceans," on Fourth Ave., was painted by the Cohort Collective to raise environmental issues. The group installed 18 murals around the county to bring topics of overfishing and ocean reef conservation to onlookers."There's not enough public art, we don't think, in San Diego. We have the best weather and people are outside all the time, so we should have more art on the streets and for people to easily access," Cornog said.A way for our history and future to shine through, wherever you may be in San Diego."We feel art shouldn't just be in galleries, it should be everywhere you look," Prima added. 2715

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department says it paid out nearly million in overtime throughout the course of protests and riots in the county.According to the department, ,862,798 was paid out from May 28 through June 4, 2020.The department said more than 24,000 hours were worked throughout the protests. The figure includes overtime for sworn deputies and support staff.
