SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect was arrested Monday morning after climbing onto the roof of a La Jolla home, where he remained for just over an hour before surrendering to SDPD officers.Dispatchers received a call around 4:45 a.m. from a woman who reported hearing a person on the roof of her home in the 1500 block of Coast Walk, off Torrey Pines Road just east of Prospect Place, San Diego police Officer Tony Martinez said.Officers responded to the home and the woman pointed them to where she had seen the suspect, Martinez said.Police entered the home to make sure the suspect hadn't made it inside, then they spotted him on the roof and ordered him to surrender, the officer said.The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody around 6:10 a.m., Martinez said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Customs and Border Protection agents, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, intercepted two smuggling boats, arrested six people and seized roughly 528 pounds of methamphetamine and 941 pounds of marijuana off the coast of San Diego over the weekend, authorities reported Tuesday.The first apprehension happened around 1:10 a.m. Saturday, when agents detected a panga-style boat traveling northbound off the San Diego coast, according to CBP officials. The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour helped CBP agents chase down the boat, which was eventually halted around 12 nautical miles west of Oceanside when agents fired shots into the suspects' engine.Agents arrested four people from the roughly 28-foot boat and seized 528 pounds of methamphetamine.The second seizure happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. Saturday, when the crew on U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Haddock responded to a report of a suspicious vessel and boarded a fishing boat that was docked at the San Diego Bay channel.CBP agents also responded to the vessel and found two people who did not have proper documentation to be in the United States. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County health officials today reported the death of a San Diego County man due to flu complications, bringing this flu season's death toll in the region to seven.The 73-year-old man died due to influenza A complications on Dec. 16, according to the county's Health and Human Services Agency.The man's vaccination status and medical history are still being investigated. The other six county residents who have died this season had additional medical conditions and either weren't vaccinated or their vaccination status was unknown."Influenza can be deadly, especially for the elderly and people with chronic medical conditions," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Getting a flu shot is the best way to prevent getting sick."At this time last year, 11 county residents had died due to flu complications. Last flu season was the county's worst in nearly 20 years of collecting data, with 342 residents succumbing to flu complications. Residents over the age of 65 with underlying medical conditions accounted for much of that death toll, according to the county.According to the county's weekly flu report for Dec. 16-22, lab- confirmed flu cases rose for the fourth consecutive week, from 290 to 410. That jump is a far cry, however, from the same week last flu season when reported cases spiked to 2,332.
