There are tens of thousands of sexual assault cases that not only go untold, but unsolved. Joyful Heart Foundation is a non-profit fighting to get backlogged rape kits sitting on evidence shelves tested in order to clear more cases. "No matter where they live and no matter what their zip code is, they have rights to have their kit tested,” says Ilse Knecht, director of policy and advocacy at the foundation. But why aren't they being tested in the first place? “One of the biggest factors is rape is not prioritized as the violent crime that it is, Knecht says. “So, unless somebody asks for that kit to be sent forward, such as a detective or prosecutor, it could sit there forever.” Knecht says factors such as money and resources also play a role. Reports show many of the cases are being suspended instead of closed, but that’s changing, slowly. “Just had a big win in New York state,” says Knecht. “Gov. Cuomo just signed a bill, the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights, that allows survivors, among many other things, to know the status of their rape kit.” During the 2017 legislative session, the Joyful Heart Foundation helped pass 17 bills in 15 states to push rape kit backlog testing. It was a major step toward justice, and Knecht says they’re not done fighting.“It's really important that every rape kit that has been sitting on the shelf for years is taken off the shelf and know that every single kit that is collected is tested in a timely manner,” she says. 1500

Tourist Staci Jones flew to D.C. from Texas to see the African American Museum, the Smithsonian's newest and most popular museum. “It is frustrating that the one thing I wanted to do, I’m not gonna be able to do before I leave,” Jones says. Adonai Mahoungou came to D.C. from Mississippi and also wanted to see the museum.“I was really disappointed because I was getting ready to go to museums, have some fun,” says Mahoungou. “And to see that because of a government shutdown, disappointing, because I was ready! I was excited! Dang.” In addition to all Smithsonian museums being closed, the National Zoo is also closed, including the zoo's popular giant panda web cam. Outside of D.C., the shutdown is forcing some national parks to close because of health and safety concerns. Understaffed parks cannot keep up with overflowing toilets and trash cans. “It was kind of smelling bad down there, and I don't know how it's affecting the park with human waste and everything,” says Yosemite National Park visitor Katie Kensok. As more people start to feel the pain from the shutdown, President Trump and new Congress now face more pressure to come up with a solution. “Being from Texas, I don't work for the government. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Video games are not just for the young anymore – they’re for the young at heart. People over the age of 50 are one of the fastest growing group of video game players in the country and that is translating into big bucks. It’s a trend that can be seen at the Hayes Senior Wellness Center in Washington, D.C. That is where afternoons are a time to get up and strike in video game bowling. “It’s fun,” said 62-year-old Karen Glymph. “It brings you up, makes you laugh.” Glymph plays to win, even though video games are not what this generation grew up with. “We didn’t have this then,” she said. “Most everybody wanted to go outside. Now, they want to stay and play video games.” That is especially true for seniors, according to a new study by the AARP. “Gaming and technology – that's where we see a bigger shift,” said Alison Bryant, AARP senior vice president of research. How big is the shift? In 2016, about 40 million people over the age of 50 played video games monthly. By 2019, that number soared to more than 50 million. That means 44% of all seniors are now regularly playing video games. All of this is turning into big business, because the amount of money seniors spent on video games last year alone totaled billion. “I hope that the gaming industry is going to start taking a look at these numbers and saying, ‘wait a minute. There's really an opportunity here to increase our market share’ and to develop games that might be even more exciting for older adults,” Bryant said.
