Solving opioid addiction in America is a complex issue. But preventing prescription opioids from getting into unintended hands is an important and overlooked step in the fight against the opioid epidemic,"" said Charles Alutto, CEO of Stericycle, Inc. ""The only way to do this is for companies to join healthcare workers, government, community activists and addiction specialists in creating policies and programs that prevent prescription opioids from going beyond the intended patient. This study shows that consumers need more education on how to handle and dispose of leftover opioids, and this is another critical step that communities, medical professionals and lawmakers should consider to help stop the spread of opioids.""" 809

Sixteen states filed a brief on August 23 supporting the funeral home, urging the Supreme Court to "restore the balance of power in our federal system." The attorneys general of 13 states and the governors of three others signed, saying states should be the ones to "legislate and experiment in this policy arena."When Congress enacted Title VII in 1964, according to the brief, "sex" and "gender identity" had different meanings, and Congress has treated them as separate concepts ever since. Several federal statutes include "sex" and "gender identity" as separate traits, but not Title VII."Congress clearly knows there is a distinction between sex and gender identity. It has used both terms at the same time (indicating they are not interchangeable), and it has thus far declined to add gender identity to Title VII," the brief says."Unless and until Congress affirmatively acts, our Constitution leaves to the states the authority to determine which protections, or not, should flow to individuals based on gender identity. The 6th Circuit ignored this fact and essentially rewrote federal law, engaging in policy experimentation."It's not clear if the Supreme Court will take the case. But Lambda Legal Staff Attorney Sasha Buchert and other civil rights advocates say they are deeply concerned about the potential outcome, especially if nominee Brett Kavanaugh is on the bench. The court of appeals judge served as associate counsel and then senior associate counsel to the president from 2001 to 2003. While awaiting confirmation for nearly three years, he became assistant and staff secretary to Bush. What they know about his record on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals suggests he won't be friendly to workers or to the LGBT community, Tobin said. What's more alarming is what they don't know about his time in President George W. Bush's White House, during which the administration fought same-sex marriage, she said. The Senate Judiciary Committee released a portion of documents related to his work in the early 2000s, but none from his time as staff secretary from 2003 to 2006. Tobin and others say the release sheds virtually no new light on his legal thinking or positions on issues."What we do know is troubling enough, but the fact that there is such a concerted effort to keep us from seeing his whole record makes you wonder what they don't want us to see," Tobin said.Under President Obama, the EEOC and the Department of Justice took the position that gender identity and transgender status were protected under federal sex discrimination laws. After President Trump took office, "We knew that the administration's position about protections for transgender people was less secure than the previous one," said Stephens' ACLU lawyer, John Knight. The Justice Department released a memo in 2017 instructing DOJ attorneys that Title VII's prohibition on sex discrimination does not include gender identity or transgender status. The DOJ also sided with the Alliance Defending Freedom in the case of Gavin Grimm, a transgender teen who sued so he could use school facilities corresponding with his gender identity; and in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case, involving a baker who refused to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding. The DOJ has not filed a brief in the funeral home case. 3330

Tahlequah was spotted Saturday chasing a school of salmon with her pod mates in the Haro Strait without the dead calf for a half-mile, the Washington-state based Center for Whale Research said. The carcass likely sunk to the bottom of the waters of the Salish Sea, according to the center."Her tour of grief is now over, and her behavior is remarkably frisky," the center said in the blog.Greenpeace USA Field Organizing Manager Ben Smith said in a statement: "Tahlequah united millions of people worldwide in heartbreak and love as she carried her dead calf for 1,000 miles."Scientists are still worried about the health of a struggling sick female from the same pod. That whale -- J50, also known as Scarlet -- had been shot with antibiotics to fight an infection and had been losing a lot of weight. The Southern Resident population the females belong to has about 75 members and has not had a successful birth in three years. Only 25% of the babies have survived in the last 20 years.Greenpeace said the Southern Resident orca is an "important part of the culture and history of the Pacific Northwest," and called for greater protection for them."Unfortunately, that population is malnourished and in dire need of food and protection," said Smith, a Seattle resident. "That is why our elected officials and civic leaders have a moral responsibility to take action and ensure that the orca's main food source, salmon, recovers and is not further depleted." 1458

St. Petersburg Police arrested and charged Dainel Enrique Garcia Zambrano, an Amazon driver, on Tuesday for grand theft and dealing in stolen property.Investigators say Zambrano took several packages straight from his delivery truck to his apartment.Instead of dropping off several expensive appliances and electronics on the intended doorsteps, officers say Zambrano brought the items to his apartment in Tampa. In total, he swiped more than ,000 in goods over two months, according to St. Petersburg Police arrest reports. Zambrano only worked as an Amazon employee for seven months.Pamela Wright of Tampa says it's upsetting."Every day I order off of Amazon, and I would be furious, absolutely furious if my packages didn't arrive," Wright said.Kenneth Eady also shops on Amazon and agrees."I think that's insane. That's insanely crazy," Eady said.Investigators say Zambrano kept some items and sold others using his wife's Offer Up account.Zambrano declined to comment. "The individual is no longer delivering packages for Amazon. As this is an active investigation, all further questions should be addressed to local law enforcement," an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement.Amazon thefts by delivery drivers in the Tampa Bay area are rare, according to a review of local police reports, but the threat of porch pirates is real. Two ways to reduce the likelihood of having a package stolen include: Tracking your packages and using Amazon lockers. Amazon lockers are self-service kiosks that provide a place to pick up your package with a unique pickup code.Customers hope the crime sends a message to company leaders."If a company is going to sign on and advertise and supply a service, then they better back it up with the people they hire," Bob Kay of St. Petersburg said. This story was originally published by Sarah Hollenbeck on 1843
