BEIJING, May 21 (Xinhua) -- China may see increased planting acre of early rice this year, though drought has not been relieved in some areas, said a statement on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture on Saturday.China is expected to plant 88.5 million Mu (5.87 million hectares) of early rice this year, about 1.6 million Mu more than the previous year, thanks to soaring rice prices and policy incentives, the statement said.However, drought continues in Hubei Province, Poyang Lake areas in Jiangxi Province, Dongting Lake areas in Hunan Province and Leizhou Peninsular in Guangdong Province, the statement said.The drought has affected about 3 million Mu of paddies in Hubei in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, the statement said.The statement urged local agricultural departments to help facilitate paddy management, as strong rains were forecast for southern China from Friday to next Tuesday.The middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River received about 40 to 60 percent less rain this year than in previous years -- this year being the least amount of rain in the past 50 years, said the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Yahoo Inc. on Monday announced that it has acquired IntoNow, a startup company whose technology can let users almost instantly recognize TV content and share favorite programs with their friends.IntoNow has built a technology platform that can automatically identify live television content and any previously aired U.S.- based television programming in the past five years.It also offers an application for iPhone and other devices running Apple's iOS operating system, which can help users connect and engage with their friends around the shows they love.With the application, users can find out what their friends are watching and engage in discussion through their favorite social networks, or discover what shows they have in common with others and which of them are on air right now."Relying on social channels as a means for discovering content - - whether it's on a PC, mobile device, or TV -- is rapidly on the rise," Bill Shaughnessy, Yahoo's senior vice president of product management and product marketing, said in a statement."IntoNow's technology combines the ability to check-in to what a consumer is watching, engage in conversations, and find related content," he added.In a post on its company blog, Yahoo noted that the addition of IntoNow will enhance its video programming, and bolster its social engagement across the Yahoo network and on all screens.IntoNow, headquartered in Palo Alto in the U.S. state of California, was only launched in January 2011 and now has seven employees.Yahoo didn't disclose terms of the purchase. BEIJING, March 24 (Xinhuanet) -- A new study has found that many overweight women and children often underestimate how heavy they are, according to media reports Wednesday.The study, conducted by researchers from Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, surveyed 111 women with the average age of 39 and 111 children aged between 7 and 13.Among the participants, about 66 percent of the women and 39 percent of the kids were overweight or obese.They were shown images of different body silhouettes representing a range of weights, including underweight, normal weight, overweight, obese and extremely obese.The research findings showed that 82 percent of obese women and 43 percent of overweight women underestimated their weight, while only 13 percent of normal weight women did so.As to the children group, about 86 percent overweight or obese kids low-balled their weight.Lead author Dr. Nicole Dumas said, "The implications of this is the overwhelming impact of obesity on children who are growing up in communities where obesity and overweight is the norm rather than the exception."  She added, "Strategies to overcome the obesity epidemic will need to address this barrier to weight loss."

MEXICO CITY, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The Mexican government signed an agreement with the non-governmental group TRAFFIC on Tuesday to exchange information about illegal seizures of flora and fauna species in Mexico.The agreement with the wildlife trade monitoring network also called for the Mexican government to provide information on the routes used to transport such organic materials.The agreement was signed on the sideline of the 16th meeting of the Trilateral Committee for Wildlife and Ecosystem Conservation Management in the city of Oaxaca, south Mexico. Representatives of Canada, the United States and Mexico also attended the meeting.Among the list of 20,000 animals, vegetation and insects that TRAFFIC considers to be threatened by illegal trafficking worldwide, 2,500 of the organisms have their origins in Mexico. This amounts to 12 percent of the species most subject to buying, selling and transporting in the black market and threatens the survival of various ecosystems.The Mexican species that are listed among the most threatened by illegal trafficking are the cactus, orchids, reptiles, maguey plants, ferns, amphibians and fish.
