SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – With nearly a dozen casinos in San Diego County, a local gaming expert says the region has become oversaturated creating too much competition. This is forcing the county's gaming resorts to focus less on gambling and more towards becoming an entertainment destination to help drive revenues.Others are laying off staff. The news comes amid a string of critical headlines targeting some local casinos.RELATED: Controversial 0M Jamul casino opens its doors, creates traffic problems in area?Last week, the developers and operators of Hollywood Casino declared in a filing that it was pulling out of a contract with the Jamul Indian Village, citing nearly million in losses. The Pala Casino Resort and Spa also confirmed that there will be layoffs, citing pressure from an increasingly competitive casino market in Southern California.Longtime gaming expert Dave Palermo says with the addition of the Hollywood Casino, the market just got very competitive for San Diego County’s 10 casinos.RELATED: Sycuan Casino breaks ground on new hotel and resort expansion? As far as the overall gaming market in the state, Palermo says it’s holding pretty steady with annual gaming revenues increasing about five percent. While the state’s gaming market remains healthy, Palermo says for each casino, holding onto their share won’t be easy. Palermo says local casinos are taking their cue from the Las Vegas industry where revenues from amenities like hotels, food and entertainment are now a bigger piece of the pie.A total of six local casinos have been undergoing expansions.A spokesperson for the Jamul Indian Village Tribe declined to comment on the Hollywood Casino’s revenue losses, but says the development is an important step toward the tribe managing its own casino.“Our announcement today represents an important step toward our long-held goal to manage our own casino,” said JIVDC Chairwoman Erica Pinto.“We are grateful to Penn National for all their hard work and leadership in bringing what was a very challenging development project to fruition,” said Pinto. 2102

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Video taken in Mexico shows dozens of migrants climbing over the border fence in Border Field State Park. The video, provided to 10News by Joebeth Terriquez Espinoza with AFN, a news agency in Mexico, shows people successfully climbing over the fence and onto the beach on the U.S. side of the border just after 4 p.m. A spokesperson for Border Patrol says agents arrested people as soon as they crossed, preventing anyone from getting away. A total of 24 people, 18 men and six women, were taken into custody. According to Border Patrol, 23 of the people who crossed the border illegally were from Honduras while the 24th person was from Guatemala. All 24 people arrested were taken to a nearby Border Patrol station for processing. The incident happened the same day several asylum seekers had their first immigration hearings before a San Diego judge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While the Friday night lights of high school football are dimmed for the time being, the same cannot be said for the pickleball courts in Del Cerro."There is nothing better than to play pickleball on a Friday night," says avid player Deanna McDonald. Some players decided to pick up the game after the pandemic hit, and found it to be so much fun. And while some sports and other physical activities have been limited, or put on hold due to COVID-19, pickleball has become a great alternative."When my gym closed, I was looking for something to do besides just walking around my neighborhood a few times, and get some exercise," says pickleball newcomer Noli Zosa.As for player Joe Arnold, he can't get enough pickleball."I suffer from what is called pickleball addictive disorder, and it really helps that a lot," Arnold joked.Prior to the pandemic, pickleball was exploding in popularity. From the young to the old, it's a sport that can be played at any age."The people who play are so nice, and you'll hear a lot of laughter in all the games," says Zosa. Now, when it comes to playing pickleball, there are no actual COVID rules, but these players do their best to keep the game as safe as possible."We sanitize the ball, and try to keep our social distance after each game. We just try to be smart." 1329

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A border church and border mosque are calling for a day of unity. A Bi-National Day of Prayer will be held at Friendship Park; a place where families on both sides of the U.S. Mexico border can meet. The group is also releasing a short film to encourage federal leaders to keep Friendship Park open. The film is called “A Prayer Beyond Borders.”“Friendship Park is the only place on the U.S. Mexico border, where families who have been separated by U.S. immigration policy, can come together,” says Dustin Craun with CAIR San Diego. Families “can physically be together.”Worshippers have been holding prayers there every week since 2011. “We can pray together when we can come together. We can break bread together,” says Imam Taha Hassane, with the Islamic Center of San Diego. Worshippers say there have been threats to close Friendship Park, but no action was ever taken. They are hoping their continued presence will show federal leaders they need this space open. “Millions of families in the United States and Mexico have no access to each other at all,” says Craun. “Closing friendship park would close any possibility of them being able to see each other.”First United Methodist Church and the Islamic Center of San Diego are calling for a day of unity for people of all faiths, for the Bi-National Day of Prayer. It will be held a Friendship Park on Sunday, October 27th, from noon to 2 p.m. 1427
