Thirteen wealthy parents, including actress Felicity Huffman, and one coach will plead guilty to using bribery and other forms of fraud as part of the college admissions scandal, federal prosecutors in Boston said on Monday.Huffman, Gregory and Marcia Abbott, Jane Buckingham, Gordon Caplan, Robert Flaxman, Agustin Huneeus Jr., Marjorie Klapper, Peter Jan Sartorio, Stephen Semprevivo and Devin Sloane were all charged with one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud and have agreed to plead guilty, prosecutors said.Bruce Isackson and Davina Isackson will plead guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud, and Bruce Isackson will also plead guilty to money laundering conspiracy and conspiracy to defraud the IRS for taking a tax deduction for the bribe. Finally, Michael Center, the former men's tennis coach at the University of Texas, agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud.Huffman, the "Desperate Housewives" star, pleaded guilty to paying ,000 to a fake charity associated with Rick Singer to facilitate cheating for her daughter on the SATs, the complaint says."I am in full acceptance of my guilt, and with deep regret and shame over what I have done, I accept full responsibility for my actions and will accept the consequences that stem from those actions," she said in a statement."I am ashamed of the pain I have caused my daughter, my family, my friends, my colleagues and the educational community. I want to apologize to them and, especially, I want to apologize to the students who work hard every day to get into college, and to their parents who make tremendous sacrifices to support their children and do so honestly."My daughter knew absolutely nothing about my actions, and in my misguided and profoundly wrong way, I have betrayed her. This transgression toward her and the public I will carry for the rest of my life. Huffman, Lori Loughlin and other defendants are facing anywhere between six to 21 months in prison if convicted or if they plead guilty, the official added, though the exact sentence would depend on a number of factors.Huffman released the following statement, according to ABC News. 2515

The US Department of Agriculture will continue providing food stamps to millions of Americans through February, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue announced Tuesday. The agency initially guaranteed funding for the program, which serves more than 38 million people, only until the end of January if the partial government shutdown isn't resolved sooner. The department says it is now using a provision allowing it to make obligated payments within 30 days of a government funding lapse, and is working with states to issue February's food stamp benefits -- which are expected to total .8 billion -- by January 20.The shutdown began after funding ran out December 21.This move does not draw down on the billion the agency has in reserve for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, as food stamps are formally known.Perdue told reporters he hopes the announcement will relieve the confusion and anxiety over benefits running out after this month. As for March, he said there is ample time for Congress to send President Donald Trump a spending bill that he can sign, noting that Trump has been clear he expects to see funding for border security. The agency will look at all available options for providing assistance if the shutdown has not been resolved in time for March payments, said Brandon Lipps, an acting deputy undersecretary at the agency. This is not the first time the department has issued benefits early, though previous instances have involved natural disasters, such as hurricanes.Other federal food assistance programs that support tens of millions of low-income Americans will also continue at least through February, said Lipps. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, known as WIC, and the department's food distribution programs are funded through next month. The child nutrition programs, which include school breakfasts and lunches and after-school meals, are set through March, Lipps said. 2006

Tom Hanks says he has the “blahs" but no fever as he and his wife Rita Wilson remain in isolation after contracting the coronavirus. A representative for the Oscar-winner confirms the pair have been released from a hospital and are in self-quarantine in Australia. The couple arrived in Australia in late January on the Gold Coast where an untitled Elvis Presley biopic directed by Baz Luhrmann was to be shot. Hanks plays Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The film has suspended production. 509

There's new concern about medical costs because of the coronavirus. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we were already seeing hospital costs rising.Insurance comparison website Quote Wizard looked at a decade of data and it determined the average cost of a hospital visit went up 36% to more than ,300 a day. In some states, the increase was higher.“Why that matters right now during COVID-19 is obviously there is a stress on the healthcare system with people being sick from coronavirus but also significant numbers of people losing their jobs,” said Adam Johnson, a Quote Wizard analyst. “Millions of Americans losing their jobs and when they're losing their jobs, they're losing their employer sponsored health insurance.” Rising hospital costs are due in part to uninsured and underinsured patients that receive care. However, there's another significant contributor that could be easier to correct.“In other countries where health care systems are a little more uniform, the administrative aspect is much lower, 1 to 3% of total healthcare costs, but in the United States, that’s around 8%,” said Johnson. Hospitals did get some emergency relief funding under the CARES Act and other stimulus bills. That will help offset some of the extra COVID-care debt, but only time will tell how the crisis will impact future costs. 1335
