SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A deaf and legally blind man was promoted to the Marine Corps Recruitment Depot as a Prep Chef last week and is thrilled to be back to work. Kevin Tong was born deaf in Vietnam and moved with his family to San Diego when he was 13. He fell in love with cooking during an internship and started working in hotels, honing his skills in the kitchen.In his 20s another challenge hit, his vision started to go dark. "I started to see from what would be considered a tunnel and I went to the doctor because it was really alarming to me to work in food services and not have the vision I needed to cut safely," Tong said through interpreter Laila-Wendy Chouinard with the Helen Keller National Center.From 2016 until about two months ago, Tong didn't have a job. That's where the HKNC stepped in with training.They have six core areas of training, according to Susanne Hogan, Senior Orientation and Mobility Specialist, Helen Keller National Center. "We teach in orientation and mobility, which teaches travel in the community or the work environment. We teach assistive technology," which helps those with hearing or vision loss communicate says Hogan."They helped me not only as a deaf-blind person to find success but they taught me how to be independent by teaching me mobility skills, taught me employment skills," Tong said through sign language.He advocates for others in his shoes, "so for those who are deaf-blind or have vision loss, I tell them be flexible and learn to take on challenges." He said even if you can't do something, watch and absorb the information. He said if you don't give up you can achieve your dreams, like saving up to travel the world. "I want to learn more about other deaf cultures, other deaf-blind people who live abroad, I want to see what they do and how they live," Tong says.Tong is one of about half of the staff at the Mess Hall overcoming obstacles to try and lead a normal life, serving those who serve our country. He works for a company called Sodexo, and General Manager Kevin Hollingsworth said he's been very impressed with Kevin's ability and his drive to earn promotions.Tong worked for Camp Pendleton for two months before being promoted and transferring to MCRD. At MCRD he works off a recipe to feed 2,700 recruits three times a day, according to officials on base.A green cutting board helps him see what he's doing easier and he wears extra pairs of gloves to protect himself while working: "If I show any type of distraction it could cost me one of my fingers."October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month and the Helen Keller National Center hopes to raise awareness of their services and help those like Tong.The Mess Hall hasn't stopped running through the pandemic, keeping Marines and recruits full and ready for training. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A football player was badly injured during a Homecoming football game at Scripps Ranch High School Friday night. According to a witness, the injury happened five minutes into the second quarter at the 30-year line. The witness told 10News the wide receiver laid on the field for 20 minutes before an ambulance arrived to rush the student to the hospital. School officials and the victim's sister confirmed to 10News that the football player is expected to be okay. 493

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two 7-Eleven stores located within two miles of each other in San Diego were robbed by a man with a gun and the suspect in each incident was at-large Saturday morning.The first occurred at 11:10 p.m. in the 4200 block of Voltaire Street, near Catalina Boulevard, in the Point Loma Heights neighborhood, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The suspect walked into the store and approached the clerk, then lifted his shirt and showed the clerk the handle of a gun in his waistband and demanded money. The clerk gave the suspect an unknown amount of money and the man ran out of the store southbound on Catalina Boulevard, Heims said.The second robbery occurred at 12:45 a.m. Saturday at 3185 Midway Drive, near Sports Arena Boulevard, when a man walked into the store, lifted up his shirt and pulled a gun from his waistband, placed it on the counter facing the clerk and demanded money, Heims said.The clerk gave the gunman an unknown amount of money and the suspect put the gun back in his waistband then ran from the store northbound on East Drive into the Target parking lot, Heims said.In both robberies, the suspect was described as a white man, late 20s to early 30s, 6 feet tall and 180 pounds with short brown hair and a mustache. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A camp in Vista is giving kids a place to cope with the loss of a loved one, along with others on the same journey.Experience Camps provide boys and girls whose parent, sibling or primary caregiver has died, with a program that helps build confidence, encourages laughter and allows them to navigate their grief through friendship, teamwork, athletics, and the common bond of loss.The nonprofit provides the experience free for families. "My mom she was really, really nice. I loved her with all my heart. When she passed, it was devastating," said 13-year-old Dylan from San Diego.Dylan's mother died of breast cancer. "It was really tough, but once I got here it was really good to know that other people had the same experience," said Dylan.This is Dylan's third year at camp. He and others are gaining coping mechanisms to navigate their grief better. "The common experience we all have is grief, and I think that's the strongest bond between all of us," said Amit Sura, a camp counselor. A typical camp day includes two activity periods, such as volleyball, tennis or arts & crafts. The third morning period is focused on different techniques in the bereavement toolkit, built to help the campers identify, express, and understand their feelings. Later in the day campers take part in a camp-wide activity, such as relay races or a hike up a nearby mountain. The camp comes together again during free swim, dinner, and an evening activity before retiring to their bunks."Today we did a mindfulness activity, talked about sitting with emotions like anger, happiness, sadness," said Sura. "When they're here, and everybody's sharing their experiences and their emotions, it's a bond that's unbreakable."Experience Camps has five locations across the country, serving boys and girls.Families can register in November.The nonprofit relies on donations to send children to camp for free, you can donate here. 1940
