Joe Biden has formally clinched the Democratic presidential nomination, setting him up for a bruising challenge to President Donald Trump that will play out against the unprecedented backdrop of a pandemic, economic collapse and civil unrest. The former vice president has effectively been his party’s leader since his last challenger in the Democratic primary, Bernie Sanders, ended his campaign in April. But Biden pulled together the 1,991 delegates needed to become the nominee after seven states and the District of Columbia held presidential primaries Tuesday. Biden reached the threshold three days after the primaries because several states, overwhelmed by huge increases in mail ballots, took days to tabulate results.Heading into Super Tuesday, Biden was the underdog. He lost contests in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada and was struggling to fundraise. Then, Biden scored a huge win in South Carolina on February 29, thanks in large part to endorsements and support from prominent black Democrats in the state. Following the South Carolina race, opponents Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar dropped out of the race and endorsed Biden. Biden was able to parlay his success in South Carolina into a massive Super Tuesday which catapulted the former vice president from underdog to favorite overnight. As the spread of COVID-19 forced Biden and opponent Bernie Sanders off the campaign trail, Sanders opted to drop out after the Wisconsin primary, leaving Biden standing alone.Biden will formally be nominated in August at the Democratic National Convention. The convention is slated to be held in Milwaukee, but it’s unknown if the coronavirus could interfere with having an in-person event. Biden issued the following statement late Friday:A little more than three months ago I stood on stage in South Carolina and told the American people that ours was a campaign for everyone who has been knocked down, counted out, and left behind. Those words take on an ever greater resonance today, at a time when so many Americans are hurting and have suffered so much loss. So many feel knocked down by the public health and economic crisis we are weathering. So many feel counted out and left behind by a society that has for too long viewed them as less than equal, their lives as less than precious. This is a difficult time in America’s history. And Donald Trump’s angry, divisive politics is no answer. The country is crying out for leadership. Leadership that can unite us. Leadership that can bring us together. We need an economy that works for everyone — now. We need jobs that bring dignity — now. We need equal justice — and equal opportunities — for every American now. We need a president who cares about helping us heal — now. It was an honor to compete alongside one of the most talented groups of candidates the Democratic party has ever fielded — and I am proud to say that we are going into this general election a united party. I am going to spend every day between now and November 3rd fighting to earn the votes of Americans all across this great country so that, together, we can win the battle for the soul of this nation, and make sure that as we rebuild our economy, everyone comes along. Today, I’m once again asking every American who feels knocked down, counted out, and left behind, to join our campaign. Because we aren't just building the movement that will defeat Donald Trump, we are building the movement that will transform our nation. I truly believe that when we stand together, finally, as One America, we will rise stronger than before. This is the United States of America. There is nothing we can’t do, if we do it together. 3674

INDIANAPOLIS — "I didn't know what to think. I was still in shock like how did the fire even happen?"Rachel McRee was in the restroom when she heard a loud explosion come from the kitchen where her boyfriend, Raveen Sugantheraj, had been cooking. "We didn't even realize that he had been burned," McRee said. The kitchen was on fire. So our first priority was putting that out."Once the couple finally put the fire out near the stove top, they realized that Sugantheraj had been severely burned. "It's his arms, his face, his neck, his hands, his ear," McRee said. "I feel terrible for him and the pain that he's in. I just feel horrible, you know, he's in so much pain," she said. "I've watched him get his bandage changed. He's got raw skin. It's like ten to 15 percent of his body that's just burnt off."Sugantheraj was in the hospital undergoing surgery on Friday."They're having to do skin grafts, severe ones. One is going to be pigskin, one's going to be his own skin," Sugantheraj's girlfriend said. She is not sure of his recovery time. The cause of the fire? A can of Pam cooking spray kept too close to open flames. "He's a full-time med student. He's educated. He's very smart... He had no idea - I had no idea," McRee said. "We know to keep cooking oil away, especially not on the stove top, but we had placed it far enough to where we thought it was OK."The medical director in Eskenazi's emergency department, Dr. Tyler Stepsis, said aerosol bottles like Pam make oils even more flammable. She said that this is a common occurrence. "You not only have the thing your aerosolizing but you also have the propellant. And the propellant a lot of times is what can catch fire," Dr. Stepsis said. As a warning: "When you set it down, don't put it by your stove, put it very far away because I don't want this to happen to anybody else," McRee said. Doctors say, bottom line, know what you're cooking with and keep it a safe distance from flames. RTV6 reached out to the company that makes Pam, and they told the newsroom:"Like other aerosols, PAM Cooking Sprays are flammable, and its contents are under pressure. All PAM Cooking Sprays include warnings on the front and back of the packaging warning consumers that the product is flammable."The company also added that it should not be left on a stove or near a heat source, should not be sprayed near an open flame and should not be stored above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. If you have a problem and need help getting results, connect with RTV6 by emailing us at workingforyou.com. 2549

In the least surprising news of the day, Duke superstar Zion Williamson was the first name called when the NBA draft began Thursday night in New York.In his lone season at Duke, Williamson was the biggest draw men's college basketball had seen in years. Listed at 6 feet, 7 inches tall and 285 pounds, Williamson was a hoops highlight reel -- not just with his explosive dunks but with his all-around game. And also when he blew apart one of his shoes during a game against North Carolina.Williamson led Duke to the Elite Eight at the NCAA tournament, averaging 22.6 points and 8.9 rebounds. The Pelicans had only a 6% chance to land the top pick after a 33-49 season but beat the odds. 696

Lawmakers have agreed to ban the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21 and repeal three health care taxes designed to help pay for the Affordable Care Act as part of the sweeping year-end spending agreement, according to multiple people involved in the talks. The restriction on tobacco sales has long been a push by a somewhat odd compilation of members, ranging from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a Kentucky Republican, and Republican Sens. Mitt Romney of Utah and Todd Young of Indiana, and some of the chamber's top Democrats, including Sens. Richard Durbin of Illinois, Tim Kaine of Virginia and Brian Schatz of Hawaii. Those lawmakers have been looking for a means to get the prohibition across the finish line, and now they've found one by attaching it to a must-pass series of bills to avoid a government shutdown. The final version of the bill is expected to be released later on Monday, and the increased age restriction for tobacco purchases is one of several provisions outside the spending measures themselves that will be attached to the broader .4 trillion spending agreement and likely become federal law.The medical device tax, health insurance tax and "Cadillac" tax on employer plans -- all of which have faced bipartisan opposition on Capitol Hill and have been targeted by health care industry lobbyists for years -- would also be repealed in the agreement, the people said. Their opponents on Capitol Hill have been looking for a popular bill that they can be attached to, and this spending package is the last train leaving the station in 2019.Negotiators have also agreed to extend the Export-Import Bank for an additional seven years and provide financing to shore up miner pensions that are at risk of running out of money, the people said. The spending bill also includes million for gun research at the Centers for Disease Control and PRevention and the National Institutes of Health, which has long been a Democratic push. It maintains the 2009

In the words of Taylor Swift, internet trolls need to calm down. The "ME!" singer has dropped the second single her new album. The song is a clapback to bullies on the internet titled, "You Need To Calm Down."Swift opens up the otherwise bubbly tune by singing, "You are somebody that I don't know / But you're takin' shots at me like it's Patrón."At the end of the verse, she tacks on the lyric, "snakes and stones never broke my bones" -- a nod to her previous album, "Reputation," in which snakes played a major role. The chorus gets straight to the song's title with the lyrics, "You need to calm down, you're being too loud."But instead of attacking her trolls, Swift sounds concerned for them. She sings, "Hey, are you okay?" in the first verse and follows it up in the second verse with, "Why are you mad when you could be GLAAD?"The lyric generating the most buzz comes about halfway through the song and solidifies Swift's support for the LGBTQ community: "And control your urges to scream about all the people you hate / 'Cause shade never made anybody less gay."Swifties, as the singer's devotees are called, will have to wait until Monday, June 17 for the accompanying music video. In an Instagram Live on Thursday, Swift promised the video will be "worth the wait.""You Need to Calm Down" is one of 18 tracks on "Lover," which releases on August 23. And while Swift described the album as romantic, she insisted that it's not going to be filled with upbeat songs."I think you can find romance in loneliness or sadness or going through a conflict or dealing with things in your life," Swift said. "It just looks at those things with a very romantic gaze." 1674
