SAN FRANCISCO, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Internet advertising revenues in the United States surged to 7.3 billion U.S. dollars in the first quarter of 2011, the highest first-quarter revenue level on record for the industry, said a new report released on Thursday.The numbers also represented a 23-percent increase over the same period a year earlier, the Interactive Advertising Bureau ( IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers said in the report."The consistent and considerable year-over-year growth we're seeing demonstrates that digital media is an increasingly popular destination for ad dollars, and for good reason," Randall Rothenberg, chief executive officer of the IAB, said in a statement."As Americans spend more time online for information and entertainment purposes, digital advertising and marketing has emerged as one of the most effective tools businesses have to attract and retain customers," he added."These numbers indicate that the interactive advertising field hasn't simply bounced back since the recession; it's growing with dynamic energy," noted David Silverman, a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers.IAB, a trade association for interactive marketing, comprised more than 500 media and technology companies who are responsible for selling 86 percent of online advertising in the United States.
BEIJING, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Ministry of Culture, along with seven other central departments, announced on Monday the launching of the "parental watch project" in the online games industry beginning March 1.The project will require online game companies to set up a web page, enquiry hotline and other special channels for parental supervision of their children.Besides, these companies shall authorize parents, who want to monitor and control their children playing online games, to take measures to limit or ban the playing.Also, the online game companies shall provide help to parents in supervising their children's online game accounts and preventing them from playing improper games, as part of the project.The culture ministry tested the project in several online game companies in Feb last year, which proved effective in helping juveniles overcome addictions to online games.
HEFEI, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has visited farmers and workers in Dabieshan Mountain area, an old revolutionary base in east China's Anhui Province, to extend new year greetings ahead of the Spring Festival, which falls on Thursday.On Tuesday, Wen went to the area's Jinzhai County, once an important Red Army revolutionary base, to learn about the local economic and social development situation.He visited Zhaoyuan Village and called in on farmer Zhao Mengqi. Wen chatted with Zhao, asking about his family's income and their preparations for the lunar new year.Zhao works as a migrant worker in Wujiang City, an economically-developed part of Jiangsu Province. They returned home on the eve of the Spring Festival."With the income we earn working in cities and what we earn growing crops, our family income has increased and we have rebuilt and renovated our house," Zhao told Premier Wen. PANAMA CITY, April 17 (Xinhua) -- In Latin America there are 600,000 people infected with the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and about 50 percent of them receive treatment, regional director of UNAIDS for Latin America Cesar Nunez said on Sunday."We have to work a lot for the other half get treatment," Nunez told Xinhua during the 124th Assembly of the Inter-parliamentarian Assembly hosted in Panama City from April 15 to 20.Nunez urged the governments of the region to redouble efforts to control this pandemic, by improving the prevention campaigns to stop new infections."The availability of the medicines has grown in the last 10 years and the countries have taken this commitment, however, the number of infections each time is bigger than the number of people we can treat," he said.According to Nunez, despite the increase of new infections among women, the men sector continue being one of the most affected social groups by this virus."In Latin America we have an epidemic where the most affected are men, followed by homosexuals, lesbians and sex workers," he said.Nunez said that during the meeting with the parliamentarians, they exchanged experiences to contribute to improve the management of this disease."We have met with parliamentarians who have voted for more budget to buy more medicines, in favor of laws for more education about this topic and participation in the exchange of information to know about the advances and backwards of the fight against Aids," he said.Some 800 parliamentarians from 125 countries attended the 124th Assembly to debate the recent events in the Arab world, the disaster in Japan and sustainable development.
MOSCOW, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The main and backup crews that will fly to the International Space Station in June have passed preflight tests and are ready for space travel, the Russian Cosmonauts Training Center said Friday.The main crew includes Russian cosmonaut Sergei Volkov, Japanese astronaut Satoshi Furukawa and American astronaut Michael Fossuma.A Russian spaceship Soyuz TMA-02M will send the crew to the space station on June 8, Interfax news agency reported.The backup crew includes members from Russia, the Netherlands and the United States.The crews were tested on the various emergency situations they could face during the flight.Next Monday, the commission will make a final choice of crewmembers for the launch.The crew will spend 161 days in orbit and conduct three space walks.
