COPENHAGEN, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- China has all along actively pushed forward international negotiations on climate change, and made its own contribution in energy saving and emissions cut, said a senior Chinese official on Sunday.     China, with its continuous development and increasing influence, is playing an ever bigger role in climate change negotiations, Xie Zhenhua, vice minister in charge of China's National Development and Reform Commission, told Xinhua.     Xie is in Copenhagen to attend the UN Climate Change Conference, which is slated for Dec. 7 to 18.     "As a responsible country, China takes a serious attitude toward combating climate change. It has always wielded positive and constructive influence on climate change negotiations, and wishes this latest conference a success," said Xie.     He said China's most important measure to boost this conference was its recent announcement of the target to reduce its carbon intensity for per unit of GDP by 40 percent to 45 percent by 2020 against the 2005 level.     He said China has set up a series of energy conservation and emissions reduction targets, and has taken many measures to ensure their implementation.     China would continue to raise energy efficiency, develop nuclear power and renewable energy, plant trees, adopt energy-saving measures in construction and transportation, and develop low-carbon economy, he said.     Developed countries, which shoulder historical responsibilities for climate change due to their emissions, have accomplished their industrialization, while China is still in the process of industrialization, noted Xie.     China, as a developing country, voluntarily put on table its emissions cut target by 2020, although the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change does not demand any numerical limitations from developing countries.     China, on its road to industrialization, will not send off greenhouse gases without restriction, Xie said, adding that China will never repeat developed countries' old paths of high energy consumption and unlimited emissions.     He said China holds the view that its efforts in saving energy, cutting emissions and boosting international climate change negotiations represent a responsible attitude to mankind and the country itself.

HUA HIN, Thailand, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday proposed strengthening cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China, Japan and South Korea to combat the global financial crisis. "Tackling the global financial crisis should remain the top priority for countries in the region at present," Wen said at the 12th summit between ASEAN and China, Japan and South Korea (ASEAN Plus Three) at the Thai beach resort of Hua Hin.     The countries within the ASEAN Plus Three system should further promote integration, peace and prosperity in the region by launching concrete cooperation efforts, he added. SHANGHAI, Nov. 1 (Xinhua)-- HSBC has raised its forecast of China's GDP growth this year to 8.1 percent, said HSBC Group Chairman Stephen Green here Sunday.     The bank's previous forecast was 7.8 percent.     While attending the annual International Business Leaders' Advisory Council (IBLAC), Green said the world financial crisis has not derailed either of the two most noteworthy and transformative trends in global finance: "the rise of China and the shift from west to east."     He also expected effects of China's stimulus packages would further lift the country's GDP growth and sustain the recovery momentum into 2010.     Green said Shanghai, as China's largest city, had kept a relatively stable growth during the crisis, which suggested it had the potential to become one of the world's financial centers comparable to New York or London.

BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Diplomats from the European Union (EU) member states on Tuesday spoke highly of China's recent promise on its greenhouse gas emissions reduction.     "We welcome that national objective of China," EU ambassador to China Serge Abou said at a press conference in response to related questions.     China, as the biggest developing nation, set a good example for the international efforts in emissions reduction, he noted.     China announced on Nov. 26 that it would reduce the intensity of its carbon dioxide emissions per GDP unit in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent from the 2005 level.     Swedish Ambassador to China Mikael Lindstrom, whose country currently holds the rotating EU presidency, told Xinhua that he and his country "have a lot of respect for the series of efforts" that china has made.     "The climate change is really a serious global crisis, we cannot fall into a zero-sum game," he said, noting that "we hope it will be win-win, but if we don't do anything it will be lose-lose".     As the hosting nation of the Copenhagen climate change conference, Denmark's diplomat Soren Jacobsen welcomed Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's attendance to the upcoming meeting.     China's announcement of its emissions cut promise "is positive", said Soren Jacobsen, Deputy Head of Mission and Minister Counsellor of the Danish embassy to China.     Jacobsen hoped that an agreement would be reached at Copenhagen.     The diplomats from EU's all member states gathered here at the press conference to mark that the Treaty of Lisbon came into effect on Dec. 1.     As stipulated in the Treaty, the Delegation of the European Commission to China was renamed the Delegation of the European Union to China on Tuesday.
