Nearly 15,000 jobs are at stake as General Motors has announced it may be closing as many as five factories.The company said it will close the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant in Detroit and Warren Transmission Operations in Warren. It is closing facilities and reinvesting money away from cars that once dominated roadways and to technology that the company believes will power its future."These actions will increase the long-term profit and cash generation potential of the company and improve resilience through the cycle," CEO Mary Barra said.GM is preparing for the next economic downturn and potential tariffs on auto imports. It will reduce its salaried workforce by 15 percent, including a quarter of the company's executives.A plant in Canada that is closing will eliminate 2,500 jobs. The Canada plant set to close as part of the global restructuring is in Oshawa, Ontario, where it has been open since 1953. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. — A National City crematorium owner denied Friday that human remains were released into the air during a furnace emergency at the facility.National City firefighters responded to a call Thursday afternoon at the Cortez Family Crematorium, located about 10 minutes south of San Diego.A furnace door was open while the system was operating, triggering the building’s heat detectors. A plume of smoke rose from the building and drifted east.A National City Fire captain and the San Diego Air Pollution Control District indicated human remains were released into the air along with chemicals, the crematorium owner disputes the information.Angela Cortez of the Cortez Family Crematorium says the human remains were covered with a cardboard box at the time of the emergency. The box caught fire due to ambient heat in the furnace and the remains were not burned, she said. Firefighters reset the system, which shut the door and the cremation resumed.The San Diego Air Pollution Control District said there was no public health risk from the smoke.The California Cemetery and Funeral Bureau says it is investigating the situation.Cortez Family Crematorium has been operating since 2014 and has no record of violations, state officials said.  1290

NATIONAL CITY (KGTV) -- Police in National City are searching for several suspects who reportedly robbed a jewelry store early Tuesday afternoon. According to police, three suspects entered the Eclipse Jewelry store just before 12:30 p.m. The suspects, only described as police as three black men, smashed three to six jewelry cases and got away with an unknown amount of jewelry. Police are looking into whether or not this incident is linked to a string of jewelry store robberies in late 2018 and early 2017. Between December of 2018 and February of 2019, at least three other jewelry stores throughout San Diego County were robbed in a similary manner. MORGAN HILL, Calif. -- Authorities are investigating what exactly caused a plane to land on the freeway in the Bay Area Sunday morning, according to The Mercury News. The plane landed on Highway 101 near Morgan Hill around 11 a.m. The plane blocked one lane of the highway before authorities were able to tow it away.The Federal Aviation Administration said engine failure caused the emergency landing.Only the pilot was onboard and was uninjured, authorities confirmed.
