LA MESA, Calif. (AP) — A man who police say brandished a gun from a van and a woman who then crashed the car with five children inside, injuring them, have been arrested. A person on Friday night reported that a man in La Mesa had a gun inside a moving vehicle. Police say an officer later tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over. Shortly thereafter, the car crashed. The officer pursuing the suspect found five children inside without car seats. Police say the children suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for further tests. 573

(KGTV) -- A new report from La Mesa Police show that crime in the city has decreased dramatically over the last year.According to East County Magazine, most individual crime categories are at a minimum of five-year lows with overall trends around the levels seen by the city in the 1960’s, marking 50-year lows.Crime from the fourth quarter of 2016 to the fourth quarter of 2017 decreased by more than 27 percent.MAP: Track crime in your neighborhoodViolent crimes have also seen a significant decrease since 2016. According to a report, La Mesa saw a more than 18 percent decrease in 2017 compared to the same time in 2016.Other crimes that dropped off were robberies, with a decrease of more than 10 percent, and property crimes, with a decrease of more than 28 percent.La Mesa Police Captain Matt Nichols said having the budget to be fully staffed has enabled more officers to be in the field.More outreach within the community has also led to more tips and an emphasis on attacking issues before they grow are also helping keep crime low.Another factor in the city’s success is a focus on the 911 dispatch which is run by the department. (KGTV) – After being closed by the city in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, the La Mesa attraction known as the “secret stairs” was reopened to the public.The city announced Wednesday that the popular destination near Windsor Drive is open with specific social distancing guidelines in place.The stairs, widely used as a community trail or exercise route, was shut down on March 24 due to visitors not following social distancing rules.Despite the closure, some residents told the city that warning signs noting guidelines were being ignored.With the reopening, city officials are asking visitors to know the following before going to the stairs:WEAR A MASK: Everyone should wear a mask covering their face at all times while in this public space.MAINTAIN DISTANCE: Keep physical distance of 6 feet between individuals from different households and prevent crowding.PLAN AHEAD: Visit at times or days that are less crowded.KNOW WHEN TO STAY HOME: Those with underlying medical conditions should avoid public spaces when others are present.
