DEL MAR, Calif. (CNS) -- Racing is set to resume at Del Mar Friday after three racing dates were canceled because 15 jockeys tested positive for the coronavirus. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club responded to the positive tests that wiped out racing from July 17-19 by instituting new travel restrictions to include only permitting jockeys based in California to ride and prohibiting all jockeys who leave the track to ride elsewhere from returning to Del Mar for the remainder of the summer racing season.Del Mar also re-configured and expanded its jockeys' quarters, including moving some of the functions that normally take place in the jockeys' room to an adjacent area.Racing will be held Monday to make up for one of the canceled days. The other two lost days will be made up later in the season, on dates to be determined, said Tom Robbins, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club executive vice president for racing. Many of the races that had been scheduled for last weekend have been shifted to this weekend. The Grade II 0,000 San Diego Handicap will be run Saturday and the Grade II 0,000 Eddie Read Stakes Sunday.Maximum Security, the 2019 male 3-year-old Eclipse Award winner best remembered for being disqualified for interference after crossing the finish line first in the 2019 Kentucky Derby, is the even-money favorite in the San Diego Handicap. 1358

Della Lee, 88, of Bellevue, Nebraska, rattles off the pitches from various organizations. There are veterans groups, serious diseases, and starving animals, “and there's hunger, a lot of hunger, and there's many of those, too." She has the mail sorted in piles on her dining room table.“From all parts of the country, concerning all charities,” she said. “I've never had this many letters in my life.”It's a buffet of sorts: letters and pleas for money — 700 pieces and counting since December. "The dogs. Lot of dogs, sad looking dogs,” Lee said.Even donkeys."They say, ‘I've sent you letters like that here, we need your call. We need your money,’ ” she said.Jim Hegarty, head of the Better Business Bureau, said he’s not surprised by Lee’s deluge of mail from supposed charity groups urging her to donate."It's ferocious,” he said. “I am not surprised by somebody getting that volume of mail."It’s why the BBB has an entire division devoted to shady organizations, Hegarty said. “It's a sucker list, used by every imaginable kind of undesirable character that is out there running some kind of scheme," he said.Scammers, likely outside the United States, have Lee's name and contact information — and know she's generous.Lee listed the many causes she and her husband gave to in 2017 — dozens and dozens of contributions, totaling more than ,000. "It’s the problematic contributions that she's made, or the responses provided to charities that aren't playing by the rules that are sharing her contact information," Hegarty said.Lee said the barrage of so-called junk mail has soured her a bit on giving, and has made her think twice about pulling out her checkbook. She worries that legitimate charities will suffer if other people are experiencing the same nuisance."It really does affect the local nonprofits,” said Candace Gregory, president and CEO of the Open Door Mission.Gregory said her reputable organization sends out one newsletter and one direct appeal for donations per month. She knows she’s vying for dollars among a sea of organizations — and the phone ones make it even tougher.“I think we get lost in the mailbox because there's so much mail,” she said. There are ways to stop the mass mailings. 2260

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- "When difficult things happen, artists really feel the need to give a voice to what's going on," described mother of two, Deana Lederman. Lederman always turned to paintbrushes and a canvas when things got tough. "I have been drawing and writing since I was really little."She turned her passion into profit when she became a published cartoonist, but she always had an eye for writing and books."I've always written stories and I've always wanted to get it out there, and this is kind of an interesting time to get this out there because there are a lot of families who are having a really hard time," Lederman described. She pivoted from human to something more serious and recently published a series of children's books about COVID-19."I have a friend who has two little boys in Brooklyn, New York and she shared photos of the rainbows in the windows. That seemed like a logical storyline for the silver lining and sense of connection we have during the fact we're all isolated." It inspired her first book titled 'Noah Henry: A Rainbow Story'. After that, came 'Masks'."It's about a mom who sews masks for essential workers and I think everyone's been thinking about that and seeing all the work everyone's been doing," Lederman said. Her book was recently published by TBR, a non-profit organization that supported multilingual children's books. Lederman's books were published in spanish, japanese and hebrew to name a few."It's really wonderful to be able to have these stories in my first picture books published in many languages so we can connect people during this time from all over." 1629

DECATUR TOWNSHIP, Ind. — More than 30 states have laws or local ordinances that prevent drivers from warming up their car without being inside of it, but it’s legal in Indiana – and every year, Hoosier drivers pay the price.“My husband started my car up for me to take my son to school and I came back out and my car was gone,” said Stacy Smith.Smith said her van had only been sitting in the driveway of her Indiana home and running for about 15 minutes. But that’s all it took for a thief to jump inside and drive away.Car thefts are all too common in Indianapolis. Over the past week, police have taken reports for at least 139 different incidents. Of those, at least 10 were listed as either warming up or running at the time they were stolen.Smith, who works for the Department of Corrections, says she’s been starting her car and letting it idle in the driveway for years, but it only took one time for her to learn an expensive lesson. The thieves didn’t just get away with her van.“They took my duty belt – it has my handcuffs, my OC (pepper spray), had all my kid's car seats,” said Smith.Police are asking drivers to think twice about starting their vehicles to warm them, and if you want it warmed before you leave to make sure you’re inside of it when it’s on.The other option police suggest is using a remote start with a kill switch, in case something happens. Most vehicles equipped with those systems will turn off if they’re moved out of range from the remote. 1504

DALLAS (KTNV) — Charley Pride, whose rich baritone voice and impeccable song-sense altered American culture, died Dec. 12 in Dallas of complications from COVID-19 at age 86.Born a sharecropper’s son in Sledge, Mississippi, on March 18, 1934, Pride emerged from Southern cotton fields to become country music’s first Black superstar and the first Black member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.“No person of color had ever done what he has done,” said Darius Rucker in the PBS American Masters film Charley Pride: I’m Just Me.Pride was a gifted athlete who at first thought baseball would be his path from poverty, labor, and strife. But his musical acumen was more impressive than his pitching arm or his hitting skills, and he emerged as one of the most significant artists at RCA Records, with chart-topping hits including “Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’,” “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone,” and “Mountain of Love.”He won the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award in 1971, its top male vocalist prize in 1971 and 1972, and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.His final performance came on November 11, 2020, when he sang “Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’” during the CMA Awards show at Nashville’s Music City Center with Jimmie Allen, a modern-day hitmaker who counts Pride among his heroes. 1310
