BEIJING, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun summoned Australian Ambassador to China Geoff Raby and lodged a solemn representation to the Australian side on its allowing Rebiya Kadeer, leader of the separatist World Uygur Congress (WUC), to visit Australia.Zhang expressed China's strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the Australian side on its allowing the visit, a press release of the Foreign Ministry said.     Zhang demanded it immediately correct its wrong doings and do not allow Kadeer to visit Australia and engage in anti-China separatist activities in the territory of Australia, the ministry said.     The WUC led by Kadeer is believed to have masterminded the July 5 Xinjiang riots that left at least 197 people dead and 1,600 others injured

BUDAPEST, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met here Friday with Hungarian President Solyom Laszlo, and put forward a four-point proposal to help further bilateral relations.     The Chinese vice-president proposed to maintain high-level contacts aimed at cementing friendship, to enhance economic cooperation and investment aimed at balancing trade, to improve personnel exchanges aimed at furthering understanding, and to join hands in promoting a healthy development of China-European Union relations. BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's limits on the use of plastic bags cut crude oil consumption by 3 million tonnes per year, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).     Since June 1, 2008, all Chinese retailers, including supermarkets, department stores and groceries, no longer provided free plastic shopping bags. In addition, China banned ultra-thin plastic bags, or those thinner than 0.025 mm.     China is trying to cut the use of plastic bags in a bid to reduce energy consumption and polluting emissions.     The plastic bag limits could save about 2.4 million to 3.0 million tonnes of crude oil every year and cut 7.6 million to 9.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year, the NDRC said.     The NDRC said it would further implement the regulations and inspect execution of the ban nationwide.     Retailers who did not list shopping bags on the receipts or continued to provide free plastic shopping bags would be fined from 5,000 yuan (732.06 U.S. dollars) to 10,000 yuan, according to the State Administration for Industry and Commerce.

RIGA, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu met with Latvian President Valdis Zatlers and Parliament Speaker Gundars Daudze here on Tuesday.     In his meeting with Zatlers, Hui said the China-Latvia relations have been developing smoothly in recent years. The two sides have maintained high-level contacts and strengthened mutual political trust. There has also been remarkable progress in economic and trade cooperation and people-to-people contacts.     President Zatlers visited China last year and reached important consensus with Chinese President Hu Jintao on the development of bilateral relations, said Hui.     The current visit is aimed at implementing the consensus reached last year, deepening friendship and promoting cooperation, he said.     The two sides should work together in face of the current global financial crisis, and should also look even farther and further promote cooperation, he said.
