SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) — The son of a Spring Valley couple killed in an accident in Hawaii is honoring them by creating a space for others to find peace.“This isn’t going to get easier, it’s going to get harder," Joseph Harmes says as he talks about the death of his mom, Gladys, and step-father, George Novinger. The family was vacationing in Hawaii when Gladys and George were crossing a river and fell to their death in 2017. Now almost two years later, Harmes says he’s come to a cross roads with how he’s handling his grief.RELATED: San Diego man missing, wife dead after being swept over waterfall in Hawaii"I can either choose to be a victim of seeing my mom pass or I can make it my biggest reason to honor her in my actions," Harmes says.Though his mother has been honored by others with her work starting the House of Peru at Balboa Park, Harmes wants to honor her in a personal way. He’s doing so by creating the Hacienda Wellness Retreat Center on their property, the Vineyard Hacienda.Harmes says his mom always had a love for life, focusing on her mental, physical, and emotional needs. He wants to share that mentality with others. RELATED: Missing Chula Vista son surfaces in small Mexican town with no memory, mom saysThe center will feature life coaches, activities like yoga and physical training, and a quiet place to mediate and reflect.Guests will also learn a lot about Harmes’ mom with reminders of her all over the property, including a tiki statue that Harmes had made in honor of her because of her love for Hawaii — and a reminder of the last time he was with her. Another touch will be beautifying a koi pond which was a favorite spot for Gladys. He says she named a lot of the koi after aunts and uncles in Spain. But it’s the support Harmes says he doesn’t physically have anymore that reminds him every day of his loss. “I think the biggest thing I miss about her is that she was my biggest cheerleader," Harmes added. 1963

Seniors are among the fastest-growing population of new cannabis users. However, the stigma behind cannabis could be keeping some seniors from getting much-needed relief from chronic pain, as well as sleepless nights.Greg Saweikis is one senior finding relief through cannabis. Since he was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 2017, he’s undergone rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. But after a suggestion from a friend, Saweikis started taking cannabis, too.He takes CBD and THC pills by Stratos. He even uses a cannabis cream for his hands.  “It seems like it really has been helping,” Saweikis says. “I sleep a little bit better.”  But Saweikis knows not all people his age and older are open to using cannabis.  “I think there is a large stigma, still,” he says. “And it's just a holdover from the 60s and the whole, you know, from demonstrations and all of that kind of thing.”  Since the 1930s you've been told there's something really bad about cannabis that's always going to be there in the back of your head.  Leland Rucker is editor of Sensi, a magazine for adults with a cannabis emphasis. He says the stigma is still attached.  “And I talked to one woman who it really helped her start to sleep. She's all of a sudden sleeping much better, but she was embarrassed about,” Rucker recalls. “She was embarrassed to talk to people about it, because she had been so cannabis negative all of her life.”But Rucker says more older Americans are exploring, encouraged in part by their children and grandchildren.  “And so, you have to find out what the reality is,” Rucker says. “And I think that now that it's legal, we've given people that opportunity.”   1725

Sparked by new records in California, Florida and Texas, Wednesday marks the most recorded coronavirus cases in a single day in the United States.Data compiled by Johns Hopkins University generally is not updated until the following morning, but official state-by-state data shows at least 37,000 new reported cases on Wednesday. That figure would make for the most cases reported in a single day, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The Atlantic’s COVID Tracking Project confirms a record of more than 38,000 US cases on Wednesday. The three largest US states set new records on Wednesday:California 7,149Florida 5,508Texas 5,489While Arizona did not set a new record on Wednesday, it did see a record for hospitalizations since the start of the pandemic. The reported cases is only a snapshot of the spread in the US, as there is a lag time between the onset of cases and when they’re reported to state departments of health. While President Donald Trump has suggested the rise in cases is due to an increase in testing, that alone does not explain the surge in cases in Florida, Texas and California.“Testing of course means finding cases, that is why we test,” said Dr. Ali Mokdad, Chief Strategy Officer for Population Health at the University of Washington. “But the increase in cases that we report is adjusted for testing and in many places we see a rise of cases due to increased spreading of the virus and not testing. We see a rise in Florida, California, and Texas that are true increases in cases. In other states, like NY, for example, they tested about 60K and now their % positive is coming down.”Tuesday marked the most recorded coronavirus cases in the US in nearly two months as cases dropped off in May amid stay at home orders. But with stay at home orders lifted throughout the US, cases have increased quickly. 1845
