They were chosen from around 280 that applied."It's more art than science," says Mike Krenn, the CEO of San Diego Venture Group. They're one of the sponsors of the event. "There were so many companies. We fought long and hard over who were the final 10. But they've all got some momentum going to market, all chasing big opportunities."One company, DoWhop, is an online marketplace to buy and sell experiences around San Diego. It's founder, Rae Lietzau, says winning this competition would mean expanding her workforce and bandwidth on the site."At this stage, every dollar counts," says Lietzau. "Right now it means allowing more people to get paid to do what they love to do."In addition to SD Venture Group, the event is put on by Tech Coast Angels and the John G. Howard Foundation. All three groups work to improve business in the region. Krenn says this year's competition shows how San Diego has become a hub for start-ups."We're really on the upswing," says Krenn. "It's exciting to see a lot of people imported from silicon valley. Everything's trending in the right direction."Krenn also noted that the winning team from 2 years ago went on to raise around million in capital after the competition.Even companies that don't win cash at Quick Pitch usually get a boost from the exposure. San Diego (KGTV)- Hygiene continues to be a struggle for those living on the streets, especially during the pandemic. Non-profit Duwara Consciousness is helping the homeless gain access to a hot shower.The non-profit uses its food trailer to feed the homeless. On average, they provide about 1,500 meals per week."Our distribution network currently runs as far as San Ysidro and as far north as Carlsbad," says Harisimran Khalsa.But as we continue to experience the COVID-19 pandemic, Khalsa says access to a hot shower was limited for those in need. This prompted her and partner, Davinder Singh, to move forward with their idea of a shower trailer."Hygiene access is just not as frequent. So you do end up coming down with more bugs, more viruses," says Khalsa. "We think that this is really a time when we have to focus on hygiene for our homeless population."The shower trailer contains seven individual stalls, including one that is ADA compliant."It's really critical for our guests that they have a secure environment in which to shower."Khalsa says about 20 people can use the shower per hour. The stalls are cleaned after each use following CDC guidelines.The trailer comes equipped with sinks for people to wash their hands, shave or brush their teeth. It also has laundry services. The non-profit partners with other organizations to provide space and water.Duwara Consciousness plans to launch the shower trailer on Friday officially, but so far, they say users have been grateful for a simple hot shower. 1525

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— In the wake of two serious e-scooter accidents over the weekend, San Diego city leaders are working to update e-scooter regulations. While the scooters are off-limits on all city sidewalks, they are allowed on beach boardwalks. While some believe they are instrumental in freeing up car traffic and parking, others believe scooters just bring the congestion straight onto the boardwalks.Chase McKenna enjoys riding e-scooters at Pacific Beach. He says it is the best way to enjoy the boardwalk."Cruise around the strip right here and that's fun,” McKenna said. “They're convenient because down here, they're everywhere."But what is fun and convenient for McKenna, is a total nightmare for Paul Thackery."PB's great. The scooters are out of control,” Thackery said. He says some areas along the boardwalk are beginning to look like a scooter graveyard. He has also been hit by several intoxicated scooterists in the last several months. "I can't stand them. I ride my bike down here every day, and scooters are in the way, it's dangerous,” Thackery said. “I think they should get rid of them all together. "This weekend alone, at least two e-scooterists in San Diego were sent to the hospital for severe injuries. San Diego Police said a 39-year-old man fell off a scooter just before 10 pm Saturday in Mission Beach. He suffered life-threatening head injuries. Then at 12:30 am Sunday, just a mile away, a 62-year-old man lost control of his scooter, and crashed into a sidewalk. She hopes to have fun while being considerate, as they share the busy boardwalk with thousands of weekenders."Be courteous around people, go slow,” McKenna said. “If there's a lot of people, you have to slow down, and you have to give other people the right of way."The city of San Diego is now considering making companies install “geo-fencing” on the scooters. That would automatically slow down the maximum speed of the scooters to 8mph in designated zones, including Mission Beach and Pacific Beach boardwalks. 2750
