SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The National Parks Service will survey San Diego's Chicano Park and its murals as part of efforts to add the land to the national list.The reconnaissance survey is expected to be completed next year and will evaluate the significance of the park and its artwork.The NPS announcement comes after Rep. Juan Vargas introduced a bill in 2019, The Chicano Park Preservation Act, that would require the Department of Interior to conduct a study of the park's merits for national affiliation.RELATED: Bill pushes to add San Diego's Chicano Park to National Park SystemVargas said in a release Wednesday that the NPS is willing to conduct the study without passing a bill requiring the department to do so."I’m very pleased to learn that the National Park Service will begin their preliminary assessment of Chicano Park early next year. The National Park Service affiliation will help protect the park’s longevity and legacy," said Vargas.Being affiliated with the NPS would allow the park to be eligible for technical or financial aid. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The 92-year-old San Diego man who pleaded guilty to shooting his son in the head as he slept in his father’s Old Town residence was sentenced to three years of probation. Richard Landis Peck pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter early in 2019. Peck had been facing a murder charge in the death of his 51-year-old son Robert. Peck was arrested in mid November of 2018 after going to a neighbor’s house on the 2300 block of Juan Street to tell her he just shot his son. Peck’s attorney claimed in hearings that his client’s son was an alcoholic who was psychologically abusive toward his father. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Federation of Teachers (CFT) is urging school districts across the state to roll back in-person classes and return to distance learning.CFT President Jeff Freitas said with most of the state back in the purple tier of restrictions, it only makes sense to go back to virtual learning until there is a slow in the spread of COVID-19.“We need to get these numbers down," said Freitas. “We think the best thing right now is for schools to stop their plans of reopening and, or if they are reopened, to close their schools and go back to remote.”Three Vista Unified School District schools -- Rancho Buena Vista High, Vista Magnet Middle, and Madison Middle -- returned to virtual learning Tuesday after positive COVID-19 cases were reported. It’s a back-and-forth the district has been dealing with since reopening for in-person instruction last month.“There should be more of a statewide approach and definitely a national approach,” said Freitas. “We have been asking that they take the lead on this.”San Diego Unified School District thinks it has come up with an answer. We have outlined that plan, shared it with the Biden administration,” said Marten.The plan includes a COVID-19 testing, tracking, and tracing strategy for students and staff, and 0 billion in direct relief to schools. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego is trying to stop people from driving onto the Ocean Beach Pier, recently installing plastic pylons. The city recently installed the pylons at the foot of the pier after a car sped onto the structure, hitting two people and a police cruiser in June. The pylons are the first step, but the city says it’s still considering additional options to discourage people from driving onto the pier. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Surveillance footage captured a man attacking a gas station customer in Kearny Mesa before fleeing.A 54-year-old man was paying for his coffee at the Mobil station at 8380 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. on Saturday just after 3 p.m., when the suspect began speaking to the man. Police said the suspect was not making any sense when he was speaking to the victim.Then for no reason, the man pulled a small wooden bat from a tool bag and began to hit the victim on the back of his head.
