ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — With the United States grappling with the worst coronavirus outbreak in the world, Florida hit a grim milestone Sunday, shattering the national record for a state’s largest single-day increase in positive coronavirus cases. In Florida, where parts of Walt Disney World reopened Saturday, 15,299 people tested positive, for a total of 269,811 cases, and 45 deaths were recorded, according to state Department of Health statistics reported Sunday. The numbers come at the end of a record-breaking week as Florida reported 514 fatalities — an average of 73 per day. Three weeks ago, the state was averaging 30 deaths per day.The World Health Organization reports that daily global infections hit over 228,000 last week, and the U.S. confirmed over 66,600 new cases on Friday, another record. 823

SHERMAN HEIGHTS, Calif. (KGTV) - A storage facility for homeless people to keep their belongings is at capacity, leading some people to call for expansion. The facility is in Sherman Heights, near 20th Street and Commercial. It opened in June of 2018 with room for 500 bins.It was full by Halloween. Now there is a 200 person waiting list. The city initially wanted to put 1000 storage bins in the warehouse, but pushback from neighbors led to a compromise of just 500.Neighbors worried that the facility would be a magnet for homeless people, drawing them to the area.Six months later, people who spoke to 10News say the opposite has happened. They still see homeless people in the area, but not any more than before the facility opened. They also say the amount of clutter on the streets and sidewalks has decreased dramatically.Crime has also gone down in the area. According to the crimemapping.com website, there were 188 crimes reported within 1500 feet of the facility in August of 2018. In December, that number had dropped to 73 (see chart above).Part of that is from extra police patrol. A recent police department report says that SDPD is spending nearly million on overtime to add patrols in the neighborhood of the facility.City officials told the San Diego Union Tribune they have no plans to expand the facility. But at a meeting last month at the University of San Diego, several homeless advocated said it's an idea worth looking into. 1460

SOMER, Wis. -- A couple from the Village of Somers, Wisconsin was forced to leave their home because of erosion. The house is teetering on the ground above Lake Michigan.Tom and Marge Lindgren were sitting in their kitchen last weekend when they heard a loud crash. "I heard a crash and jumped up. I looked out and the porch went crashing down.I ran up packed a bag and my wife packed a bag and we grabbed the dog and got outta here," said Lindgren. Shoreline erosion along Lake Michigan has been a problem for decades. Some homeowners invest in heavy rock barricades to fight the high waves.Lindgren received a 0,000 estimate to stabilize the bluff, but it's a price he can’t pay."I lived here as a kid. I went to school here. It's gone. I've still got to find a new place to stay," said Lindgren.Lindgren has talked to officials with the Village of Somers. They came out and boarded up his home.A GoFundMe account has been set up for the couple. 1006

Sprint and T-Mobile's have abandoned discussions about a potential merger. The companies issued a joint statement Saturday, after a week of speculation, saying they "have ceased talks.""While we couldn't reach an agreement to combine our companies, we certainly recognize the benefits of scale through a potential combination. However, we have agreed that it is best to move forward on our own," said Marcelo Claure, Sprint's CEO.T-Mobile CEO John Legere also said there were benefits to consolidating, but added that, "we have been clear all along that a deal with anyone will have to result in superior long-term value for T-Mobile's shareholders."Shares of Sprint and T-Mobile tumbled Monday after rumors emerged that merger talks between the two companies were fizzling. On Monday it looked as if SoftBank, the Japanese conglomerate with a majority stake in Sprint, would end negotiations because of concerns about the ownership structure of the combined business, according to reports from Nikkei and The Wall Street Journal. Claure, the Sprint CEO, is also a member of SoftBank's board .Exactly what issue ultimately severed the talks was not immediately clear Saturday. Neither Sprint nor T-Mobile immediately replied to requests for comment by CNNMoney. This is the second time the mobile carriers have attempted to join forces and failed.Sprint and T-Mobile previously discussed a merger in 2014 but scrapped it because of concerns about regulatory challenges from the Obama administration.Related: Sprint owner says 'door is open' to mergers under TrumpThe companies expected to have a better shot at the merger this year under the Trump administration.SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son said in May that the Obama administration was "quite tough on business," and added "the door is open" for potential mergers with the new administration.Son met with Trump the month before he took office to talk up an investment in U.S. businesses. The investment ignited speculation about Son and SoftBank trying to revive merger talks.A few weeks later, Legere said he was open to "various forms of consolidation" when asked about a potential merger with Sprint and SoftBank under the Trump administration. 2202
