LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say an off-duty Los Angeles County deputy was shot early Sunday morning while he was driving and returned fire at the suspect. The sheriff's deputy's name has not been released. Officials say Sunday he was struck once in a lower extremity and is expected to survive his injuries. Authorities say the suspect remains at large and it’s not known if he was struck by gunfire before he ran away. The other two people in the deputy’s vehicle were not hurt. LOS ANGELES (AP) — California’s workplace safety regulator has cited a frozen food manufacturer and its temporary employment agency for failing to protect hundreds of employees from the coronavirus at two Los Angeles area plants. LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Court documents show that a Los Angeles police officer accused of fondling a dead woman has been sued by her family.The lawsuit was filed Tuesday by the family of 34-year-old Elizabeth Baggett. The lawsuit accuses Officer David Rojas of fondling Elizabeth Baggett's breasts and "feeling her nipples, without limitation," as well as showing the body camera video of it to others.The alleged incident happened in October 2019. Officers were called to a home in response to a report of a body discovery.Rojas, who has been on the force for four years, remains employed by the Los Angeles Police Department.Rojas has been suspended, and he has pleaded not guilty in a criminal case.Rojas' lawyer could not immediately be reached by The Associated Press for comment. 789

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A famous South American chef says he was stopped as he brought 40 piranhas in a duffel bag through Los Angeles International Airport.Virgilio Martinez, chef-owner of Central restaurant in Peru, tells the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday that he hoped to serve the predatory, sharp-toothed fish during an LA food festival.Martinez was featured in the third season of the Netflix show "Chef's Table."He says customs agents pulled him into an interrogation room last week when they found the cache of frozen, vacuum-sealed piranhas.After five hours, the agents let Martinez through with the fish. He used them that night on a salad.
