BEIJING, July 31 (Xinhua) -- In an unexceptional courtyard on the street behind Jingshan Hill in central Beijing, two Chinese pines stand side by side.     This was the residence of Zhuo Lin, widow of China's late leader Deng Xiaoping. On Wednesday, she passed away, aged 93. Deng was also 93 when he died 12 years ago.     To complete the last trip with her beloved husband, Zhuo chose to have her ashes scattered at sea as her husband's were. Zhuo Lin, a former consultant of the Central Military Commission General Office and widow of China's late leader Deng Xiaoping, died of illness at 12:30 p.m. July 29 after medical treatment failed in Beijing, at the age of 93.Deng Xianqun, Deng's younger sister, recalled how Deng and Zhuo used to have a tacit understanding between each other.     "My big brother didn't love talking, but my sister-in-law was just the opposite," she said.     According to their children, Zhuo had taken care of all the details of Deng's life, including what to wear and how many sleeping pills he should take.     In 1966, when the political storms swept Deng from power as Chinese vice premier, Zhuo was bewildered, wondering what had happened exactly and what the future would hold.     But she chose to trust him and be with him.     "I've been with him for so long that I'm certain he's an upright man," she told their daughter, Deng Nan.     In 1969, Deng was exiled to eastern Jiangxi Province to work on farms.     Deng Lin, their eldest daughter, said Zhuo often spoke of the days in Jiangxi when they dug the land, pulled weeds and spread manure.     "Mother mostly did easy work, like cooking, as she was not very healthy," Deng Lin said.

URUMQI, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Diplomatic envoys from 26 countries and regions in China began a five-day visit to northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Monday, about a month after the deadly riot in the regional capital of Urumqi.     At the invitation of the autonomous regional government, they are expected to -- through the visit -- acquire a better understanding of Xinjiang's development over the past several decades in various respects, including its politics, economy, ethnic and religious policies, preservation of cultural relics and the livelihood of local residents. "Violence is not allowed in any sovereignty and law-ruled nation." 

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday urged more efforts to push forward the rejuvenation of the country's northeast and other traditional industrial bases.     Great progress has been made in the regions since China launched the rejuvenation move more than five years ago, said attendees at a meeting of the leading group of the State Council, the Cabinet, for revitalizing the northeast and other old industrial bases. The rejuvenation strategy of old industrial bases mainly covers regions including Liaoning, Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces and the northeastern parts of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. HAVANA, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo on Thursday visited Fidel Castro, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, in Havana, a source with the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) confirmed.     The two leaders had a two-hour conversation in a sincere and friendly atmosphere on bilateral relations and other issues of common concern, the source added.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), spoke highly of the China-Cuba relationship, according to a NPC press release.     Bilateral relationship between China and Cuba is at its best time in history, Wu said, adding that China would strive to push its relations with Cuba to a new high by continuously expanding their friendly cooperation in various fields.     Castro said Cuba closely follows China's economic and social development and feels proud when China scores new achievements.     China's success is of special significance for Cuba and all the developing nations, he added.     "The Cuban people, along with the Chinese people, will continue to support each other, work closely and intensify their cooperation with the aim to maintain world peace and realize common development," the press release quoted Castro as saying.     On China's efforts to curb the global financial crisis, Wu said China is actively participating in international cooperation while striving to maintain a steady and relatively fast economic growth.     He said developing countries should have a greater representation and a bigger say in endeavor to deal with the global financial crisis and reform the global financial system.     He also urged the international community to try to minimize the damage the current crisis inflicts on the developing nations, especially on the most underdeveloped ones.     Wu arrived in Havana on Tuesday at the invitation of Ricardo Alarcon de Quesada, president of the Cuban National Assembly of People's Power (CNAPP).     Cuba is the first leg of Wu's three-nation American tour, which will also take him to the Bahamas and the United States.     China established diplomatic relations with Cuba on Sept. 28, 1960. Cuba was the first Latin American country to have diplomatic ties with China.

BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Eight Conference of the Board of Directors of the Chinese Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification (CCPPNR) came to an end Thursday, re-electing senior leader Jia Qinglin the council's chairman.     Jia is a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).     He attended the closing session and congratulated its success on behalf of the CPC Central Committee, saying facts indicate that the council has become a major link between the mainland and overseas Chinese, and a bridge between Chinese compatriots living on the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.     He highlighted the role of the CPC in the great changes of New China in the past 60 years, stressing, "the Chinese nation will definitely play an even more splendid movement in the process of its great rejuvenation."
