SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The owner of Waypoint Public in North Park has found a way to help his business rebound from the Coronavirus Pandemic, while also assisting other businesses to do the same.John Pani invited Dang Brothers Pizza to set up a shop inside his restaurant."I've got a 5,000 square foot restaurant," says Pani. "Doing what we were doing at Waypoint, we could have done that in a 500 square foot restaurant."Pani closed Waypoint in mid-March before County Health Officials imposed a stay at home order. During the closure, he worried about his 130 employees and wanted to find a way to put them back to work.Pani decided to reopen with a limited menu of take-out items that his chefs could prepare.Then in June, he asked a friend who runs Dang Brothers to join him."They're mostly catering and special events. They don't have a brick and mortar shop," Pani says. "I told him, 'Hey man, come set your tent up.' So we craned in a little pizza oven onto our patio and got going."Pani says the response has been fantastic. Now he wants to invite other vendors to set up in his restaurant. He thinks it could create a street-market style environment that will give people a reason to come back to North Park."We have to find a new normal," Pani says. "I don't think we're going to be packing in restaurants any time soon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is joining the effort to make more affordable housing. The MTS Board of Directors recently greenlit a new 410-unit housing development at the Grantville trolley station. 156 of the units will be affordable and 254 will be market rate ‘student-oriented’ apartments. MTS is partnering with developers Affirmed Housing and Greystar on the project. It is estimated the total population housed on the planned trolley station property will be 1,049 people. The development would be built on top of the current parking lot. The developers will be making their own parking spaces on the site and MTS will be adding 96 replacement parking spots, according to transit officials. In a statement on the prospective parking concerns MTS wrote, “we average about 80 to 120 commuters per weekday that use the park and ride, so we are in the wheelhouse of demand.” MTS says it is currently looking into developing four more of its stations into similar housing in downtown, El Cajon and Chula Vista. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This record hot summer was the first that San Diegans had to pay the state's new high-usage charge on their electric bills. It led to bills as high as 0, and complaints pouring into San Diego Gas and Electric. Now, the utility says the charge - meant to discourage high use - isn't working and should be eliminated."We want to move forward to eliminate this charge and help our customers," said SDG&E spokesman Wes Jones.Jones said the utility understands the frustration over summertime bills. "We think that's very important. We want to make sure they are comfortable."SGG&E now plans to ask the state Public Utilities Commission to eliminate the charge altogether."You hopefully will see a reduced shock and awe bill," Jones said.But questions remain about the proposal. The high-usage tier is just 7 cents more per kilowatt hour than the next lower tier. SDG&E also wants to expand options, like qualifying customers with plans that have lower rates - like the ones for those with electric cars. SDG&E also proposes to change its scheduled cash credits to all hit in August to help with the year's most expensive months.The utility will also ask the Public Utilities Commission to review its baseline rates - which sets tiers from the coast to the mountains. SDG&E also hopes to combine summer and winter prices for a lower year round rate. SDG&E plans to submit the proposal to the commission in the coming months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The suspect in the shooting death of a man near the 24 Hour Fitness in the Midway area is an undocumented immigrant with a prior immigration violation, according to law enforcement sources.San Diego Police arrived at the rear parking lot of the gym at 3675 Midway Drive February 25 to find Alexander Mazin, 27, suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. He died at the scene.After the shooting, officers surrounded an apartment at 30th St and Upas in North Park.
