SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Computers have become a lifeline to San Diegans during the pandemic and a new partnership between the city and non-profit San Diego Futures Foundation could make it easier for people in need to get connected.Executive Director of San Diego Futures Foundation Gary Knight said the need skyrocketed the first three weeks of the shut down in March, "we distributed over half our annual inventory in that three weeks."That's more than 1,500 computers. The non profit partners with companies like Qualcomm, General Atomics and San Diego County to take on their old computers, refurbish them and connect them with people in need.City of San Diego Digital Strategy Manager Jen Lebron said 30,000 households don't have a computer, just within the city limits.Right now that means limited connection to healthcare, education and job seeking material."San Diego Futures Foundation has an incredibly broad reach, that way we can get these computers in the hands of students, seniors, veterans, foster families and non profits that really need the help," Lebron said.Michelle Sanudo recieved a computer from SDFF this month and said it's made her feel independent and successful. She's a single mom who relied on the library to entertain her four and one-year-old children while she worked."Really it was kind of like a sanctuary, I would get to do my paperwork for school, also apply for jobs," Sanudo said."When they closed the libraries that's when it hit me." She said the computer allows her to order groceries so she can keep her family safe during the pandemic and pursue her dream of becoming a medical assistant.As the need for computers continues in San Diego and SDFF's inventory wanes, they need more donations. That's where the city is stepping in. For the past year the city has been vetting the non profit. Wednesday the City Council Economic Development and Intergovernmental Relations Committee unanimously approved the partnership. Now it must go before the full council to receive approval. The item is on the docket for Tuesday, the 21st."We are ready with nearly 2,300 computers that we can give to San Diego Futures Foundation." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - At least two people suffered major burns in a boat fire off the coast of San Diego late Saturday night, according to Coast Guard officials.Two patients were critically injured and were flown from the boat by helicopter and have been transported to the hospital. The total number of patients at this time is unknown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Arson investigators Saturday were looking into multiple fires set within a three-mile radius of each other in Ocean Beach and Point Loma.The first fire was set at about 1 a.m. on Muir Ave. in Ocean Beach. Three more fires were set on Piedmont Dr. and Catalina Pl. in the Point Loma area, San Diego Fire-Resuce Department said.No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported. Each fire was set in rubbish behind homes, according to SDFD. Due to the proximity and similarities between the small fires, fire officials said the fires were "suspicious" and arson investigators were looking at whether they were connected. No arrests have been made."The San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) is investigating several suspicious rubbish fires which occurred last night in the Point Loma and Ocean Beach communities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Construction is underway on upgrades to Pacific Beach Middle School. The campus will get a new 2-story building, featuring 26 state-of-the-art classrooms, as part of a "Whole School Modernization" project.Other aspects of the project include renovations to the existing cafeteria and library media enter, as well as a new HVAC system for the auditoriums and science classrooms."We'll have classrooms that represent 21st-century learning spaces," says SDUSD Facilities Communication Supervisor Samer Naji. "You're talking about flexible furniture so that the students and teachers can be creative with the way they use their spaces. You're talking about state of the art technology, voice amplification systems, smart boards that the teachers and students can all use."The administration offices will also be moved to a different part of campus, creating a more easily identifiable entryway for visitors."Right now it's a large priority for the campus that we have a secure entry," says Naji. "This ensures that, during the day when kids are in class, there's only one way in and one way out of campus."Security has been at the forefront of many SDUSD projects in the wake of school shootings across the country. District officials say they want to make sure all campuses only have a single entry for visitors. The new layout at PB Middle School will accomplish that goal.The building opened in 1931. Over the years, upgrades and expansions brought it to its current 13.8-acre footprint.Money for the project is coming from voter-approved Propositions S & Z. As part of the renovation, the current two-story library & classroom building will be torn down. Demolition begins in July. The work will be done in two phases, so the school can keep enough classrooms on site to accommodate students.Unfortunately, some of the murals on the current building will be lost in the demolition. The school's principal says they want to work with students and community members to design new murals for the new building.In 2017, SDUSD completed work on a new joint-use athletic field at the Middle School. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Crews are clearing out a large homeless encampment hidden out of sight. It’s so big, it’s taking crews three days to clear the area in Webster. Trash, soiled clothes and old food containers is only a small list of what the eight man crew had to clean up. Stephen Driver, with the Alpha Project Abatement team says the area is, “really filthy. There’s urine bottles all over the place, buckets with human feces, dead animals. You name it.”The Alpha Project Abatement team cleared a stretch of Federal Boulevard. The homeless camp was tucked away near a flood channel. Driver says most of these camps are not easily seen. The Alpha Project crew is contracted with the City of San Diego. They work with the city’s Environmental Services Department to clear the mess. “Sometimes the people are here but usually they’re packing up and leaving once we get here,” says Driver. Police were on hand to make sure crews were safe. The city gave the people living there about a week’s notice about the cleanup.The Alpha Project offers a number of resources for the homeless, including a bridge shelter in downtown.
