As the COVID-19 pandemic progresses, researchers say it is important to track how the coronavirus mutates because it could affect the efficacy of a vaccine.Like all living cells, viruses evolve their chemical make-up changes. In viruses like the flu, that happens frequently, which is why every year there is a new vaccine to treat whatever strain is expected to circulate. With COVID-19, however, those mutations happen much slower, according to research out of Arizona State University.“One of the things we’re still keeping an eye on is the evolution of this virus because that virus is still around in the community,” said Dr. Efrem Lim, an assistant professor at ASU. “Everyone is coming in blind to this. This is a novel virus. This isn’t something we have seen before.”In March, Arizona State University played host to our country’s fourth COVID-19 case. As soon as it was detected, Dr. Lim started studying how the virus mutates and sent his findings to the World Health Organization. It's something that still continues to this day.“This virus, overall, mutates pretty slowly, which is a good thing,” said Dr. Lim. “However, we can have instances where the virus can have very large, dramatic, mutations, such as deletions in the genome.”While rare, Dr. Lim says those mutations can be significant as it changes how the virus acts inside the body.Currently, scientists are focusing much of their efforts on identifying ways to eliminate the function of the spike protein in COVID-19, as it is the way the virus binds to our cells and infects them (spike proteins are the stalks that protrude from the center of the virus that make it so recognizable).“It is very good news that the virus is not changing rapidly,” said ASU virologist Dr. Brenda Hogue. “We will have to see over time, as the virus continues to circulate, as we put a vaccine into play, whether or not there will be any issues.”Dr. Lim says right now there does not appear to be any issues because the virus mutates slowly, but he adds it could adapt to a vaccine once one begins to circulate.He says more testing needs to be done to determine that, however. 2140
Authorities are currently hunting a suspect in central Tennessee after a Dickson County sheriff's deputy was shot and killed on Wednesday. The suspect has been added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's Most Wanted list.Officials are searching for 31-year-old Steven Joshua Wiggins west of Nashville in connection with the death of Sgt. Daniel Baker with the Dickson County Sheriff's Office.Baker was killed Wednesday morning after responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle. He was found inside his patrol car. Wiggins, who has been arrested for aggravated assault and misdemeanor vandalism in the past, is considered to be armed and dangerous. He’s been added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Top 10 Most Wanted list. The reward for his capture has been increased to ,500. 843
At first glance, you may not notice what's different about this box of cereal. Maybe it's just one of those special editions that's in stores for a short time. But if you take a closer look you might ask, what's up with that?When Naomi Frierson walked into her local Walmart and down the aisle, her focus was getting her mom a box of her favorite cereal."I just picked it up and I kind of looked at it," Frierson said. "And I figured it was one of those special edition type of boxes. ... I didn't think much of it."But when she got home, her husband noticed."We proceed to look at it further and realize that not only are there mugshots but they're serial killers," Frierson said. "Not the C-E-R-E-A-L kind unfortunately."The box of "Life" cereal is covered with people synonymous with death. Larry, the Quaker Oats mascot is Jeffrey Dahmer. And instead of being made with 20 whole grains, it's made with 20 whole brains."And then on the nutrition panel you've got stuff like instead of cholesterol it says chloroform," Frierson said. "Down here it says cyanide."Frierson said she was creeped out, but her husband loved it."He immediately recognized all of the different players in the game," Frierson said. "And he thought it was just the coolest thing ever and assured me that it must be art."He was right. The box was a class project made by Lauren Miller, a senior art student at the University of South Florida."I kind of just wanted it to blend in with everything else," Miller said. "I took a bunch of pictures that I found online of serial killers and I used Photoshop to add them to the Life cereal box. I just thought it would be interesting to use Life cereals since these people did take away lives."Miller has a large version of the box in her studio but wanted to see how people reacted to this smaller version in the community.Frierson said, "I had people on my personal Facebook when I posted that thing like, 'Oh my gosh I need to have that. How can I get one? Are there more?'"Frierson said she's keeping this box, and Miller is exploring creating more to sell.Miller said she left a note on the box saying it was art and had already been paid for. The 68-year-old woman is one of an estimated 37 million people in the United States who does not have dental insurance."You think about it a lot, and just hope nothing ever goes wrong," she said while sitting in an exam chair with her mask on.Without insurance, a routine trip to the dentist would likely cost Eubanks hundreds of dollars, which is money she doesn't have. That is why she and her husband have turned to this non-profit dental clinic for help.Dr. Rhonda Switzer-Nadasi oversees Interfaith Dental, which is largely made up of dentists who volunteer their time so that people like Eubanks can get dental care at little or no cost. It’s a need more critical now than ever."There’s new groups of people that they were making it before and were right on that edge and are now struggling," Dr. Switzer-Nadasi explained.Since February, an estimated 12 million Americans have lost their healthcare coverage. Most lost their insurance when they lost their job.But the number of people without dental coverage is typically four or five times higher than the number of people without health insurance. This clinic that typically sees about 3,000 patients a year has seen call volume increase 20 percent."We are seeing a big increased need where people are suffering from job loss, where they may have had three jobs and they’re now down to one, or one down to none," she added.Nationwide, there's also a backlog for dental care. In this office alone, they were canceling 1,000 appointments a month during the shutdown. It’s something that worries Dr. Switzer-Nadasi during COVID-19, since most dentists are also checking a patient’s overall health. She's also seeing more patients put off emergency dental care because they're worried about cost."People that come see us don’t just need a check-up and cleaning,” she explained. “Most of the time, they’ve reached the end of their rope and what they need is critical.”But for now, this clinic and others like it across the country are doing their best to help whoever they can and preserve as many smiles as possible. 2442
