SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Washington Nationals will look to a former San Diego State Aztec to lead them into Game 2 of the 2019 World Series.Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg takes the mound Wednesday night against the Astros, dueling with Houston ace Justin Verlander. He also holds the SDSU record for lowest career ERA at 1.59. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The U.S. Navy’s surgeon General is back home in San Diego talking about military healthcare reform.10News caught up with Vice Admiral Forrest Faison at after he spoke at the San Diego Military Advisory Council Breakfast in Point Loma.“We are changing how we do healthcare in the Navy to be one of the providers of choice,” he said. “Despite all the changes going on in military medicine right now, what will not change ever is our commitment to those we are privileged to serve.”Faison said there’s no greater responsibility than providing medical forces that are ready, prepared and present to save the lives of the nation’s armed forces.He said Naval Medical Center San Diego plays a big role when it comes to providing that training.Congress recently directed the Defense Health Agency (DHA) to take over the Military Health System (MHS). Meaning, all military medical centers across the national will soon be managed by DHA.Faison says this will be a smooth and transparent transition, and military families won’t be getting a big surprise.The Naval Hospital in Jacksonville transitioned from MHS to DHA last October, hospitals on the east coast are going through it now, and the west coast, including San Diego, is next.Faison said when it comes to military families having to switch healthcare providers so often, or wait a long time for appointments and referrals, the DHA is actively working to minimize changes and alleviate wait times.“The defense health agency is responsible for managing the Tricare network to ensure there are sufficient providers to be able to meet the needs and monitor access and wait times, so we rely very heavily on them to do that,” said Faison. “I know they’re working very closely with the Tricare contractors to be able to do that in all the different locations where we have service members and their families and we ask them to be stationed to do our nation’s business.”The transition in San Diego is expected to happen no later than October 2020. 2016

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The officer who saved two twin toddlers and their dad after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs was recognized for his heroic efforts this week.San Diego Police K9 officer Jonathan Wiese was awarded the Medal of Valor and Heroic Act award from the California Surf Lifesaving Association and United States Lifesaving Association for his efforts to save the three people on June 13.SDPD received a call about a suicidal man with twin two-year-old girls driving with the intention of careening off the Coronado Bridge. Wiese was able to get the man and the two girls from the car to the shore."I could see him and he had one of the girls in his arms, and I have a two-year-old daughter at home so I imagined, what if that was my wife and kid down there? You're not going to stand there on the cliff and watch it happen," he told ABC 10News in June. "And by then four or five other cops had shown up so I pretty much threw the end of the leash to them and then I said hang on and I just jumped off."The officer also performed rescue breathing on one of the girls who was limp after being pulled from the wreck.Wiese is the same officer who helped apprehend the suspected Poway synagogue shooter in April 2019. He was on his way to meet his family for lunch on Apr. 27 when he heard a call of shots fired and immediately responded to the area."I didn't do the job to be liked every day, I didn't do it to become rich, I did it because I want to be out there making a difference and helping people, as cliche as that might sound, but I was just glad I could be there," Wiese said referring to protecting the toddlers. 2058

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Valley Fire continued to burn overnight in East County as evacuations remain in place.So far, the blaze has scorched 17,345 acres and is 3% contained, as of 6:20 p.m. on Monday. Authorities with the Cleveland National Forest tweeted Monday that the fire had only grown by 408 acres overnight.Monday morning, Cal Fire said new evacuation orders were in place for the areas of Corral Canyon off-road area, Bobcat Meadows, and Los Pinos.Evacuation orders have also been issued for Barrett Lake Dam, while evacuation warnings have been issued for Lake Marina, Dulzura, Dog Patch, Potrero, Campo, Honey Springs, Barrett Junction, Dearhorn Valley, Corte Madera, Pine Valley, and the area from Lyons/Japatul Valley Rd. to the 8 Freeway.Evacuation centers have been set up at Steele Canyon High School at 2440 Campo Road and Joan MacQueen Middle School at 2001 Tavern Road.Cal Fire said Sunday night that 11 habitable structures and 25 outbuildings have so far been destroyed in the fire.
