SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students in the San Diego Unified School District have a handful of programs designed to keep them active and help ward off childhood obesity.In 2016, the district began it's Healthy Initiative. So far, they've created wellness committees in every school. They also put their IMPACT Program into 20% of the campuses, with plans to expand in the next few years."IMPACT stands for Increased Movement in Physical Activity during Class Time," explains SDUSD's Kate McDevitt. It gets the students 30 extra minutes each week outside, learning easy-to-replicate activities that they can take home."They still have time with their PE teacher, but now classroom teachers can engage their students in station based physical activity," says McDevitt. She says it helps with their focus throughout the day."You can see them light up and really engage in the classroom activities and the earning they’re doing when they have time to move," she says.In addition to the IMPACT program, many schools have local gardens where kids learn about fresh fruits and vegetables. Cafeterias have replaced traditional, high calorie options with foods that are healthier. And some schools have changed the way they do celebrations."We have healthy celebrations," says Ocean Beach Elementary Principal Marco Drapeau. "We still celebrate birthdays and holidays. We still make a big deal out of them. But we don’t hand out the sugary treats."The need for a more health-based approach to school comes at a time when kids' risk of obesity is increasing. According to the CDC, one in five kids in the US is obese. And one in three kids born since 2000 will develop Type 2 Diabetes over the course of their lives.Drapeau says schools are on the front lines in the fight."We’re at a stage right now where we’re competing with this," Drapeau says, holding his hands as if he's holding a phone and watching tv. "We want the kids to understand there’s some real viable options for them outside staring at a screen." 2005

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The H1N1 strain of influenza is the most prominent strain of the illness in San Diego and around the nation so far this flu season, according to local health officials.Of 1,730 confirmed cases reported in San Diego this season, nearly 94 percent are influenza A, the County Health and Human Services Agency reported Wednesday. Influenza A covers H1N1 and H3N2. During the year, H3N2, or the "seasonal flu," is the primary virus in circulation.This year, however, there are 10 cases of H1N1 for every case of H3N2, health officials said.RELATED: Political commentator dies in San Diego, contracts H1N1 flu and meningitisThe strain affects young to middle-aged adults more than other age groups. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention believes this is because older adults have been exposed more to H1N1 and younger adults tend to have lower vaccination rates."Older people have some element of immunity to Pandemic H1N1 because they’ve had more exposure to these influenza viruses than younger groups," said Sayone Thihalolipavan, county deputy public health officer, said.Last week, a 26-year-old woman visiting San Diego from Washington, D.C., died possibly due to H1N1 complications. She was also suffering from meningitis, though it's unclear if she had been vaccinated or suffered from any other underlying medical conditions.Another local resident, identified as a 49-year-old male, died of the flu, according to health officials. That man did have underlying medical conditions though it wasn't clear if he had been vaccinated.This season, there have been nine flu-related deaths, officials say, compared to 44 deaths at this time last season.Health officials advise the best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated, wash hands thoroughly and often, avoid going out if you're sick, and clean commonly touched services. Those with underlying chronic conditions, pregnant women, people who live with or care for others who are high risk, and those 65 and older are most at risk of catching the flu. 2041

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surveillance video captures a burglar on the move inside a popular restaurant in Mira Mesa, and his crimes may be escalating.Inside the kitchen of T.P. Bahn Bao on Camino Ruiz, the staff is busy making steamed Vietnamese buns, days after an unappetizing discovery. "Scared, anxiety, disbelief," said Travis Nguyen, who owns the restaurant.When she got in on Thursday morning, she found loose change all over and the drawer of the cash register gone. The surveillance video revealed what happened. Just before 3 a.m., a figure is seen crouched low, shining a flashlight into the restaurant. After a few moments, the man pries open the door and walks in."It appeared he used a homemade tool to break the panic bar. It took him only a few seconds to get in," said Lon Holliday of Convoy Street Locksmith, the company that repaired the door.In the video, the man quickly heads to the cash register, removes the drawer and about 0 in cash."He knows what he's doing. I think he's done this before," said Nguyen. After the thief is done in the front - and with a loud security alarm going off - the intruder heads towards the kitchen, where he looks around. He then goes into the walk-in cooler. He apparently doesn't like what he sees and takes off."He's in and out of the restaurant in under two minutes. He's quick," said Nguyen. It's an elusive quality residents in the a nearby neighborhood are familiar with. Amid of a rash of porch and package thefts, one homeowner sent 10news video of a man on a bike she saw stealing a car jack from a porch two weeks ago. The man does resemble the intruder. If it's the same man who broke into the restaurant, he's getting bolder."You never know what he can do. Not only stealing stuff, he might be so desperate he might hurt people, too. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming election is this Monday, Oct. 19, but unlike most states, California offers a backup option for people who miss the deadline.It’s called conditional voter registration or same-day voter registration, a process that allows California voters to register in person through the last day to vote on Nov. 3. Voters who register conditionally must cast a provisional ballot, which takes longer to verify and appear in the final tally.In the November 2018 midterm election, 2,353 voters used the conditional registration process, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters Office.Starting Oct. 20, voters in San Diego County can register conditionally by visiting the Registrar’s Office in Kearny Mesa at 5600 Overland Avenue.“They would register, and then go over and receive their ballot and vote that same day,” said Registrar Michael Vu.Beginning Oct. 31, polling places will open, and voters can register conditionally and cast a ballot there. However, you will want to go to the polling place assigned to your address, which you can find at sdvote.com.Voters who go to the wrong polling place will be allowed to vote for certain offices, like president, but they could have selections for local offices like city council invalidated if the polling place is located in a different district.California started allowing conditional or same-day registration in 2017. It is one of 21 states to allow the practice.Individuals seeking to register conditionally must provide their driver’s license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number to prove they’re eligible, along with their address and other information.Voters do not need to show ID or proof of residency, except in rare circumstances.Once conditionally registered, the voter will be given a provisional ballot. A provisional ballot is just a ballot that’s placed in an extra envelope with a little more information from the voter so election workers do an added layer of verification before the ballot is counted. That takes time.“Generally they are counted last,” Vu said.There are other instances when voters might have to cast a provisional ballot: like if you’re registered but go to the wrong polling place, or if you want to vote in person and forget to bring your mail-in ballot to surrender. In some cases, poll workers can electronically view the status of your mail-in ballot without the need to surrender it, but in other cases the voter may have to vote provisionally.With conditional voters, election officials will first verify that the person is eligible to vote, then they’ll make sure that person hasn’t voted already before adding their ballot to the tally.Voters who successfully complete a conditional registration will automatically be considered registered for future elections. 2860
