NEW YORK (AP) — Gap Inc. is moving away from the nation's malls. The San Francisco-based brand was for decades a fixture at shopping malls around the country. Now it says it's closing 220 stores by early 2024. Back in August, the company announced its plans to close 225 stores globally.The parent company is also shuttering 130 Banana Republic stores. The moves announced Thursday are part of a three-year plan that will see Gap focus on outlets and its e-commerce business. Gap joins other clothing retailers in trying to reinvent themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic. NEW YORK — A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday morning that New York District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. can get access to President Donald Trump's personal and corporate tax returns.The ruling by a three-judge panel in New York rejected the president’s argument that the subpoena for his taxes should be blocked because it was too broad, and could be seen as political harassment from the DA.Vance says his office will not enforce the subpoena for 12 days in exchange for the president’s lawyers agreeing to move quickly, according to the New York Times.It has been over a year since the district attorney first subpoenaed eight years of Trump’s tax returns and other financial records as part of an investigation into the president’s business practices.Wednesday’s decision is the fifth time courts have rejected Trump’s attempts to block the subpoena. His lawyers are expected to appeal the ruling to the United States Supreme Court.Vance has not revealed the details of his office’s investigation, however court papers suggest they are looking at a range of potential crimes including tax and insurance fraud and falsification of business records, according to the New York Times. 1197

NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio grabbed a roller Thursday and helped paint the words "Black Lives Matter" front of the namesake Manhattan tower of President Donald Trump.De Blasio was flanked by his wife, Chirlane McCray, and the Rev. Al Sharpton as he helped paint the racial justice rallying cry in giant yellow letters on Fifth Avenue in front of Trump Tower."We are liberating Fifth Avenue," de Blasio said. "We are uplifting Fifth Avenue."The NYC Department of Transportation closed off the avenue between 56th and 57th streets around 7 a.m. Thursday in preparation for the painting.The DOT said the block would remain closed to automobile traffic until Sunday, however, the bus lane will be operational sooner.The mural was originally set to be painted on July 2, but was postponed due to "logistics," de Blasio said at the time. Nine children have been reported dead at a New Jersey nursing home in the last week, at least eight from viruses that cause respiratory illness, the state health department said.The ninth victim, described as "medically fragile with respiratory illness" by the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, died late Saturday night at a hospital, the state health department said in a statement. It is awaiting laboratory confirmation of adenoviruses in a child who died Friday.The viruses are known to persist on unclean surfaces and medical instruments, and may not be eliminated by common disinfectants, but they rarely cause severe illness in healthy people. Those with weakened immune systems, though, have a higher risk for severe disease and may remain infectious long after they recover, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. They are common in places with large groups of children, such as child-care settings, schools and summer camps.There have been 25 confirmed pediatric adenovirus cases at Wanaque, including the eight child deaths. NEW YORK CITY — Mayor Bill de Blaiso suggested that the snow day as we know it may be gone due to remote learning, as the city prepares for what could be it's biggest snow storm in years. The mayor announced that all schools, including in-person learning, would be open Wednesday. The mayor cited expectations that the storm will not begin to hit New York City until 4 p.m. School buses will also be in use. "School will be in session Wednesday," de Blasio said. "We do not expect the snow to even begin until school is complete tomorrow." On Thursday, there will be classes one way or the other. While the decision has not yet been made on in-person learning, all students will have the option of remote learning for Thursday regardless of how much snow the area gets.De Blasio suggested parents have an alternative ready for Thursday. "We're going to be assessing the storm as it arrives, we will be making a decision as we get more information." De Blasio suggested they may have the information they need to make a decision by 6 p.m. Wednesday. The city is under a winter storm watch for late Wednesday into Thursday.
