Since the Trump administration announced it would end its practice of separating families apprehended at the southern border last June under its "zero tolerance" immigration policy, at least 245 children have been separated from their parents, according to a new court filing.Between late June 2018 and early February of this year, the administration identified 245 children who had been separated, though four of them are under additional review. The case was later expanded to become a class-action lawsuit.District Judge Dana Sabraw issued a preliminary injunction last June blocking most family separations at the US-Mexico border and ordering that those already separated be reunited.As of February 13, the government has discharged 2,735 of 2,816 possible children who fell under the Ms. L lawsuit, according to Wednesday's court filing. There are also five children in the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which is required to place kids with a sponsor in the US, proceeding toward reunification "or other appropriate discharge." Four of those children have parents who are not in the US.Of the children who were separated as of last June, 62 are no longer in Office of Refugee Resettlement care, according to the court filing. It adds: "Based on the information available to date, in the 245 identified separations the parent was either excluded from the Ms. L class or was separated for a reason consistent with the Court's preliminary injunction."The government is still reviewing the cases of four separations.Plaintiffs in the case have requested additional information on the new separations. School officials say a student has been shot to death at a Texas high school, and a suspect remains at large. Grenita Latham, interim superintendent of the Houston Independent School District, confirmed the shooting victim at Bellaire High School had died. She gave no other information except that classes will go on Wednesday and took no questions. Emergency crews were seen performing CPR as the student was carried on a stretcher to an ambulance outside Bellaire High School, KPRC-TV reports. SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Officials say a labeling error caused a person infected with the novel coronavirus, officially named COVID-19, to be mistakenly released from a hospital, but the oversight was noticed as she was returning to a San Diego military base. Officials with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday the mix-up came to authorities’ attention while she was being driven back to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, where more than 200 evacuees from China are living under federal quarantine. Officials say she was isolated at the base for testing and sent back to a hospital after results came back. The CDC said the error occurred after it issued a negative finding Sunday on a large batch of specimens taken from people quarantined at the base. The woman had her sample taken at the hospital, where she was being observed for a cough. The hospital released her at CDC’s direction after being told that everyone quarantined had shown negative results, when, in fact, her sample was excluded from the rest of the batch.Dr. Christopher Braden, who leads the CDC’s delegation in San Diego the mixup was the result of a labeling issue. China’s National Health Commission (NHC) found that the number of new coronavirus cases has been trending down over the past few days. Still, the CDC said Wednesday that it may be optimistic to think the virus cases are peaking. There are also new questions about how long it can take for the virus to show up.
