A sniper who targeted cars on a Georgia highway left behind a "hate-filled" document describing the Parkland high school gunman Nikolas Cruz as a hero, a sheriff said.Authorities identified the sniper as Rex Whitmire Harbour, 26, of Snellville, Georgia.He shot at cars in Gainesville on Friday, leaving three people injured before he shot himself dead, Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch said in a statement Saturday.Harbour hid in the woods as he waited for motorists on the side of Georgia 365, Couch said. He fired at least 17 times and hit seven cars, wounding two men in the hip and leg. A third person -- a woman -- was slightly injured by broken glass, authorities said.The two men suffered injuries that are not life-threatening, and are in stable condition. 782

A new invasive tick is spreading through the United States, which is the first time in 50 years a new species has come to the country.The Asian long-horned tick has spread throughout the Eastern Seaboard already, causing mild concern from public health experts, according to The New York Times.The new arrival has yet to be found carrying any human diseases here. Domestic American ticks carry pathogens and transmit them into people rather often."In Asia, however, the species carries a virus that kills 15 percent of its victims," according to the Times.The new ticks are considered a threat to livestock.According to the Times, the long-horned ticks “can multiply rapidly and suck so much blood from a young animal that it dies. The ticks bloat up like fat raisins until their tiny legs are barely able to support them.”So far, the tick has been found in seven states. Experts say the tick is hard to identify."It is an aggressive biter and frequently builds intense infestations on animals causing great stress … and blood loss," according to a statement sent to The Charlotte Observer from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture“Even experts have difficulty distinguishing among tick species, so it is important to take precautions to protect pets, livestock and family members from becoming a host for ticks of any kind,” state veterinarian David Wolfgang told the Pocono Record. “Scientists don’t yet know how this species will adapt to the North American climate and animal hosts, but we know it survived New Jersey’s winter and has infested sheep and cattle in this region.”So far, the tick has been found in Arkansas, Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia and West Virginia.The tick can survive throughout the year, according to the York Daily Record.“We know it can survive very harsh winters. A relaxing swim in the ocean after a day of training suddenly changed when a shark got close to a coast guard group, prompting crewmembers to fire shots in the water to scare the animal away.Members of the Coast Guard Cutter Kimball had completed operations for the day “a zillion miles from land” and “had not been off the ship for weeks,” they said in a Facebook post describing the encounter. A United States Customs and Border Protection officer is accused of falsely claiming to be a US citizen when he applied for the job, the Department of Justice said. According to DOJ officials, Marco Antonio De La Garza Jr., 37, of Hereford, Ariz. was charged with three counts of passport fraud and false statements on his federal law enforcement background application. The DOJ is claiming that De La Garza knowingly used a fraudulently obtained Texas birth certificate to apply for a United States passport. De La Garza is also accused of using the same birth certificate to claim US citizenship during his background check.It is unknown how US officials were unable to figure out that De La Garza's paperwork was fraudulent.  The charges stemmed from an investigation conducted by  the Department of State-Diplomatic Security Service and the Department of Homeland Security-Office of Inspector General. The DOJ claims that De La Garza was actually born in Mexico. The Associated Press confirmed that he was hired by border patrol in 2012.   1116
