At an elevation above 8,000 feet, Aspen Ruggerfest is taking the sport of rugby to new heights.This four-day tournament attracts athletes of all ages and genders, with players looking to show off their skills against some of the best competition in the country.“There’s a lot of US players still out here in Ruggerfest,” said Alec Parker.Parker is an Aspen legend. He’s played for his hometown team, the Gentlemen of Aspen Rugby Football Club, and represented the United States in four Rugby World Cups.Now, retired from rugby, Parker says playing in the Aspen Ruggerfest is equally as important as playing internationally.“I love this weekend. It’s the best,” Parker said of Aspen Ruggerfest. “Best weekend of the year for sure.”Now in it’s 52nd year, Aspen Ruggerfest continues to grow by attracting athletes from across the country and across the world.“The sport is fun as hell,” said former Aspen RFC coach Freddie Waititi.Waititi says rugby is the fastest growing team sport in the country, and the numbers support it. In 2014, the Sports and Fitness Industry Association reported a 350 percent growth in participation over a five-year period.“It’s fun watching the young guys that we coach being able to pick up the things that we are trying to pass on to them and actually use them,” Waititi said.Despite more people now playing their favorite sport, the Aspen team is mourning the loss of one of its own.“It’s quite a weird one this year,” said one an Aspen player. “We’re missing one very important person that’s been a part of Aspen rugby for longer than I can even remember.” On the night before the Gents first match, the team held a team dinner and dedicated it Jerry Hatem, a former Aspen player-coach, who lost his life in a snowmobile accident this summer.“(Jerry) would be sitting here having a beer after lining the field for the whole day with bruises blood all over his face,” the Aspen player said. “He just loves rugby and is a great guy.”This a game that transcends athletics, with players saying their teams are more like their families. And when the Aspen Gents took the pitch, Hatem’s family was watching from the sidelines, saying jerry would be proud.“(Jerry’s) saying it by what we’re witnessing here,” said Mike Hatem, Jerry’s brother. “This whole community just comes together.” Because whether rookie or old boy, local or import, rugby culture is all about camaraderie, and Aspen Ruggerfest embodies that, at a higher level. 2470

An English teacher with Metro Nashville Public Schools has been placed on leave pending a disciplinary review for a homework some parents considered to be inappropriate. The assignment itself has sparked conversation about race and how to handle tough subjects in the classroom.The homework in question was assigned to 30 students at Cane Ridge High School in Antioch as they discussed "Fences," a play and film adaptation exploring the topic of race as a father struggles to provide for his family. The handout given to students asked them to write a one-page paper on the derogatory term "n-word" and answer several questions including how the word is racist and how it is used. In the assignment provided by a parent, the term was spelled out. The play uses the language frequently. The parent, who wanted to remain anonymous, said she was hurt and felt the conversation about race and derogatory terms should be taught by parents and not the school. She wanted more awareness about how sensitive the topic is and preferred prior notification. The teacher involved has been with MNPS since 2015 and received no disciplinary actions in the past. Spokesperson Sean Braisted of MNPS said the assignment has been retracted and canceled. In a statement, MNPS Director Dr. Adrienne Battle said, “The homework assignment given out at Cane Ridge High School was offensive, inappropriate, and out-of-line with the standards of MNPS. I sincerely apologize to students, families, and community members who may experience pain or trauma as a result of this incident.""It's difficult for sure in this particular context if the assignment is appropriate, but based on what I see, those are the kinds of questions we need to engage with our young people," said Cornelius Vanderbilt Distinguished Professor of Education Richard Milner.Milner said having deep conversations on tough subjects like this is in the classroom is essential and can be beneficial to help young people engage in difficult conversations outside of the classroom. However, he stresses a lot of work is required to communicate the meaning and history behind the word beforehand."Thinking about and asking young people to engage with the word without talking and being deliberate about the historical nature of it can do more harm than good," he said.Milner said while most teachers tend to have really good intentions, sometimes teachers are unprepared to address what might be considered the difficult issues, and should have proper tools. Since the incident, a student started an online petition showing support for the teacher. So far it has garnered more than 800 virtual signatures. The student said the teacher is "being persecuted for trying to prepare us for the real world by gifting us with the ability to think critically."Battle said the actions of the teacher will be investigated by Human Resources. By the time 2024 rolls around, we may be seeing brand new sports at the Summer Olympic Games.Some of the new sports include surfing, karate, skateboarding and breakdancing. A school in Washington, D.C. called The Lab is already training dancers in breakdancing to prepare them for Team USA.Competitive break dancer Evan Sletten has been a taking classes at The Lab for six years.“A lot of upper body strength goes into it,” Sletten describes of the sport.Sletten says he would describe it as an athletic dance. “Competitive breaking is very different in the sense that there’s rules,” explains The Lab owner Antonio Castillo. “There’s a point system. You have a referee. You have different criteria in place to make sure it’s a fair sport.”Castillo has considered breakdancing a sport for a long time, and he already uses an Olympic scoring model for his students.“We use a 10-point system and all of criteria is the definition of what the dance is, so you can’t argue against it because those are the elements that make up the dance,” Castillo says.Sletten says the point system helps with improvement.“It’s great because if you need to improve, you’re not just seeing win or lose,” he explains. “You’re seeing each category, every little thing that you did right that you did wrong.”In a way, this group of competitive break dancers has been gearing up for the gold for years already.
