Hotels and home rentals can drain a family’s savings. 10News reporter Jennifer Kastner found a local family that’s able to go jet setting without breaking the bank, thanks to a home exchange network.Dana Fallentine, her husband, and their four kids have been taking incredible vacations at an impressive savings. “[We’re talking] thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars,” she tells 10News. Fallentine found the website Love Home Swap, which connects users with homeowners around the world. Arrangements can be made to do temporary home trades.The fee is 0 a year. Compare that to the most recent average U.S. hotel price, which is 0 a night, according to Statistica. Members can swap homes or use points to stay in rental homes. For protection, phone numbers, email addresses and home addresses are not made visible on the website.The Fallentine family's most memorable experience was from a swap they did with an Italian family. The Italians got to the Fallentine's home the night before the Fallentine's flew off to the Italians' home in Rome.“I took them to Costco. They bought all this food and then they said, ‘Oh, we're going make you guys dinner.’ I’m like, ‘Totally! I’m not going to pass up a meal by real Italians. I mean, that's crazy!’”Fallentine says when her own family home-swaps, having access to another home’s kitchen is one of the biggest cost-savers.“If you're thinking about the food aspect, just to be able to cook your own food is amazing and [you have a] full kitchen with everything you need,” she adds.Another perk is having access to a home's laundry room. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The city of San Diego has turned to two community leaders to assist with gang prevention and improve communication between police and the community.Mayor Kevin Faulconer on Tuesday announced the hiring of Rev. Gerald Brown to oversee police-community relations, and Pastor Jesus Sandoval to lead its commission on gang prevention."At age 16 I had been shot and stabbed, didn't think I would make it to 18," said Sandoval, once in a gang himself. "Since then I've been dedicating my life to helping other people."Brown will take over the Citizens Advisory Board on Police-Community relations, which meets monthly at various locations in the city. He said he is already working on arranging for clergy to spend 10 hours a month with police.Brown also wants to make himself accessible to the community and says he will bring concerns directly to the chief of police. "Really focus on how do we bring communities together? How do we bridge that gap, especially when working with African American community and law enforcement, find ways we can seek peace," he said. But some say the city needs to do more. Kate Yavenditti is a member of Women Occupy San Diego, which is seeking more police oversight. She said she has been attending the police-community relations meetings for about two years and hasn't seen many results.She said she would like the groups to be more than just advisory."So they can send recommendations up to the mayor and the mayor doesn't have to make any changes, and that's pretty much what's been happening," she said.The police-community relations board next meets 6 p.m. Monday at the Taylor Branch Library in Pacific Beach.    1706

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Confederate monument at the center of an emotional debate has been removed from inside a city-owned cemetery in San Diego."It's a relief. I'm glad," said Amanda Bergara.Amid the recent protests aimed at racial injustice, Bergara was one of nearly 2,800 people to sign an online petition calling on San Diego's mayor to take down a confederate monument from inside Mount Hope Cemetery."It's a symbol of hate and disrespect for those who fought with their lives to end slavery," said Bergara.RELATED: Online petition seeks removal of Confederate memorial in San Diego cemeteryBuried in the cemetery are both Union and Confederate soldiers, who later lived in San Diego. The memorial, erected in 1948, names General Stonewall Jackson. In June, ABC 10News discovered the stone on the monument heavily damaged, with vandalism an ongoing issue. Unlike other Confederate markers removed in San Diego, the plot on which the monument sits is privately owned, and the city has maintained its hands are tied. The owner, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and supporters have said such markers are monuments to history.In the end, a city spokesperson says it was removed weeks ago at the request of the Confederate group, presumably to protect it from vandals. The monument is being stored by the city."Hopefully ending the hurt and pain for those who would have seen it and felt that hurt and pain. I hope it never sees the light of day," said Bergara.Not all the hurt is gone. A flagpole remains, along with a marker that includes the name, Stonewall Jackson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The County of San Diego filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the heads of Homeland Security, Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, calling for the reinstatement of the “Safe Release” program and reimbursement for the cost of treating a recent influx of asylum seekers. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Ronald D. Vitiello, Immigrant and Customs Enforcement Executive Associate Director Matthew T. Albence, Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection Kevin K. McAleenan, and Chief of Border Patrol Carla L. Provost are named in the lawsuit. The lawsuit claims the county has been harmed as a result of what it describes as a “sudden and unlawful change” in policy, releasing asylum-seeking migrants from federal detention into the county while “denying them previously-provided assistance in reaching their final destination(s) outside the County.” RELATED: Reaction: County of San Diego sues federal agency chiefs over asylum seeker careFrom 2009 to October 2018, ICE implemented a policy described in the lawsuit as “Safe Release”, which provided asylum seekers assistance in reaching final destinations outside San Diego, attorneys say. The aid came in the form of phone calls and transportation to other areas of the U.S. ICE officials said the policy ended last fall due to limited resources to support the program, according to the suit. The lawsuit claims some 40 asylum seekers and family members were dropped off at a San Diego bus station within 24 hours after the end of Safe Release. County attorneys say since then, as many as 80 parents and young children have been released into San Diego County each day. County attorneys wrote the vast majority of asylum seekers and family members must remain in the area without sufficient means to support themselves. The County of San Diego also wants a preliminary and permanent injunction requiring the defendants to resume providing asylum seekers and their family members assistance in reaching destinations outside the County. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The family of a Navy sailor nearly killed in Syria is starting the new year with one less challenge.Over a year ago Navy EOD Tech Kenton Stacy was left paralyzed after an IED explosion. As Stacy was recovering in San Diego, renters were destroying the family’s Virginia home. “Just with everything we’re going through, it added stress. I just couldn’t believe how someone could damage our home and be okay with it,” said Kenton’s wife Lindsey.The home reeked of cigarettes, and the carpet, walls, and blinds were destroyed. When the EOD community in Virginia learned what happened in November they began to make repairs on the home.Julie Fish, a real estate agent with Signature Realty Select, also stepped in to help, taking over as the realtor.After reaching out for more help, people around the country offered money, time, services and resources. “These guys are...it’s like a brotherhood, there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for one another, and I like to think the wives are the same way,” said Fish, whose husband is also a Navy EOD Tech.
