As the debate over voting by mail continues, President Donald Trump told a North Carolina news outlet that voters should test election safeguards by voting both in person and via mail, something which could cause voters legal issues.Trump has expressed doubt in mail-in voting during the 2020 election cycle, claiming that mail-in voting is prone to fraud. But many states, some of which are led by Republicans, are ramping up mail-in voting efforts. Proponents of mail-in voting say that it is a safer alternative than in-person voting given the coronavirus pandemic. The president, speaking to a reporter from WECT, said he wanted voters to test the state’s safeguards.“So let them send it in and let them go vote, and if their system’s as good as they say it is, then obviously they won’t be able to vote,” Trump told WECT. “If it isn’t tabulated, they’ll be able to vote. So that’s the way it is. And that’s what they should do.”In North Carolina, it is a Class I felony to vote twice. The National Conference of State Legislatures has a list of laws pertaining to “double voting” on its website. Voting twice in an election is illegal across the US.Meanwhile on Wednesday, US Attorney General William Barr said that voting by mail is “playing with fire.”“We're a very closely divided country here,” Barr told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. “And if people have to have confidence in the results of the election and the legitimacy of the government and people trying to change the rules to this, to this methodology, which as a matter of logic is very open to fraud and coercion, is reckless and dangerous. And the people are playing with fire."While there is scant evidence of widespread voting fraud in past elections, there are questions on the US Postal Service’s ability to return ballots in time to be tabulated. In Florida, Volusia County Elections said more than 1,000 ballots that should have been counted for last month’s primary did not arrive on time. There were 1,281 ballots postmarked the day before Election Day, but election officials received them too late to be counted. The USPS has experienced some service disruptions as some sorting machines have been removed from some post offices. While this had an impact on last month’s primary, the USPS slowdown has also caused slowdowns for essential items such as medicines and paychecks. 2350

As the USPS is collecting letters from children across the United States, someone will need to respond to all of those children. Starting Friday, the USPS will begin Operation Santa, which will allow adults to respond to letters written by children. According to the USPS, potential adopters can read the letters and pick one, or more, that they’d like to fulfill. USPS says for security reasons, potential adopters must be vetted by going through a short registration and ID verification process before they are allowed to adopt any letter. The USPS says that the program is intended to help millions of less fortunate children. The program is for every person of every belief, or non-belief, USPS says. This is the first time Operation Santa has gone nationwide because of the pandemic.USPS says children who want to be a possible recipient of holiday gifts can write a letter, put it in a stamped envelope with a return address, and send it to Santa’s official workshop address. Letters will be accepted Nov. 16 – Dec. 15.The address is:Santa Claus123 Elf RoadNorth Pole, 88888Those who want to respond to a child’s letter can do so by going to the Operation Santa website here. 1187

As Thousand Oaks comes to grips with the dual traumas of a deadly mass shooting and destructive wildfires, Brian Hynes will have to decide whether to reopen the Southern California bar where 12 people were killed. The Borderline Bar & Grill, the kind of place that comforted and supported the community in times of distress, is closed after a Marine veteran opened fire there last week in what authorities called a "horrific scene" before he apparently took his own life. Will the bar reopen? Hynes, the establishment's owner, said he knows how he'll come to a decision."With what Borderline is to ... my community, I don't know if (reopening) is going to feel right. But once I stand inside that building, it's going to be like going to my childhood home, and I'll know. I'll know then," he told CNN's Brooke Baldwin on Monday afternoon."There's no way I'm not going to reopen out of fear or anything like that. If it works, we will definitely reopen, but right now ... with the fires going on in our same community ... I'm trying to get people back in their home beds, with their pets and their families." 1117

ATLANTA (AP) — A federal judge has sentenced a California man to serve 35 years in prison for traveling to Atlanta to have sex with a 9-year-old girl. The U.S. attorney's office in Atlanta said Tuesday that 40-year-old Craig Alan Castaneda of Imperial Beach must also register as a sex offender and serve 10 years supervised release after his prison term.Castaneda was convicted in December.RELATED: Alabama governor signs bill permitting chemical castration for sex offendersAn undercover FBI agent posted an ad on Craigslist in April 2015 posing as a mother seeking a "teacher" for her 9-year-old daughter. At 102 years old, Bea Lumpkin hasn't missed voting in a presidential election in 80 years. And even though COVID-19 is putting older Americans at risk ahead of the 2020 election, Lumpkin would not be denied her right to vote. The retired Chicago teacher donned full personal protective equipment — including a hazmat hood and gloves — so she could deliver her ballot to a nearby mailbox."If Bea can do it, anyone can do it. Vote!" the Chicago Teacher's Union said in an Instagram post.Lumpkin said she hopes her vote inspires others to hit the polls this fall — whether by mail, early or in-person."That's why I had my grandson take a photo of me, because if I could come out at the age of 102 and face a pandemic [to vote], nobody should have an excuse," she said to "Good Morning America." "I think that in this election more than any other that I've taken part in, the only way we can answer it is for the people to come out and vote and stay active to a degree we've never seen before." 997
