SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Five women will be celebrated for their contributions to San Diego as this year's inductees into the county Women's Hall of Fame.Coinciding with the start of Women's History Month, Lilia Garcia, Ruth Goldschmiedova Sax, Colleen O'Harra, Bridgit Wilson, and Dorothy Smith will be inducted during a ceremony on March 3 at the Jacob's Center.Nominated by the community, the five women were chosen to "represent and reflect the full depth of the diversity of San Diego County."To purchase tickets to the event, click here.Here's a look at each inductee from the Women's Hall of Fame:Lilia Garcia: Garcia is currently the San Diego County Deputy District Attorney and co-founder of the group "Latinas in the Law." She has advanced causes of equality, justice, and empowerment on both sides of the border, serving on boards and committees in the U.S. aimed at advancing equlity and helping Mexico's legal system transition to oral advocacy.Ruth Goldschmiedova Sax: Sax is a survivor of three Nazi concentration camps and dedicated her life to speaking about her experiences and reminding everyone that hate is never the answer. Her life was chronicled in a biography by her daughter, Sandra Scheller, and won the Multicultural Motion Pictures Award for best documentary. Scheller will accept the award posthumously for her mother.Colleen O'Harra: O'Harra is the founding Executive Director of the Oceanside Women's Resource Center and has served the city for eight years as an Oceanside City Council members and two years as Deputy Mayor.Bridgit Wilson: Wilson is a veteran who has advocated for LGBT active duty and military veterans, working to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and helping craft the Obama Administration's policy allowing transgender individuals to serve openly.Dorothy Smith: Smith served on the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education and was the first African American woman elected to public office in the county. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite ongoing efforts by the county and health systems to roll out the new COVID-19 vaccine, experts say communities of color find it challenging to trust the system.Roberto Alcantar with the Chicano Federation says tackling a mindset may be harder than tackling the virus."Historically, we have seen that in the black and brown community, there has been a general distrust of government," Alcantar said.New data from the Pew Research Center shows that only 42% of Black Americans say they would get a COVID-19 vaccine once it is available. In comparison, 61% percent of white, 63% of Hispanic, and 83% of Asian populations say they would get the vaccine. Not because they are anti-vaxxers. Instead, many attribute that number to the Tuskegee Syphilis Study."Horrific stories that we've heard about medical trials in the Black community back in the 1950s and 1960s in which they were things being done without their awareness," Alcantar said.It was a 40-year experiment that affected more than 600 black men who were told by the American government they were getting treatment for syphilis and other illnesses. When in reality, even after treatment was found, the men continued to get unrelated injections."So there's a lot of justification for that mistrust," Alcantar said.Locally, Latinos make up the most positive COVID numbers. But Alcantar says the level of confidence in a new vaccine is still low. He says whether it is lack of access, information, or trust, Latinos have historically sought out less care, and the pandemic has only highlighted medical inequities. That is why he believes it is important for community organizations to work with the government, not to force on the vaccine or sway people's opinions, but to build trust."There's a lot of work to do in regards to trust in government," Alcantar said. "But we're here to make sure that our communities are well-informed and have all the facts so that they can make the best decisions for themselves."The World Health Organization attributes "vaccine hesitancy" as one of the ten threats to global health. 2105

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Details are beginning to emerge about the woman who was shot and killed inside a Church’s Chicken in the South Bay Wednesday night. Maribel Merino-Iba?ez, 28, was killed while working her shift at the Otay Mesa West restaurant. “I believe in God and I believe that one day justice will come his way and that won’t bring my daughter back, but I know that there will be justice for her,” said Emma Karla Merino, the victim’s mother. "I just want justice, because nobody can bring my sister back. Her body is gone, but she is here in my heart and she’s never going away,” said Gabriela Merino, the victim’s sister. Someone who knew Merino-Iba?ez told 10News she had worked at the Church’s Chicken for nine years and was a shift manager. A vigil is set to take place at the restaurant Friday at 6 p.m. Another victim was identified as Mario Rojas. He was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital where he underwent surgery and is now in stable condition. According to police, the suspect is a man in his 30s who got into an argument with employees after trying to use counterfeit money. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family and supporters of Jonathan Coronel stood at the San Diego County Administration Center Friday, demanding justice for the past three years without their loved one.Coronel was shot 16 times by San Diego Sheriff's Deputy Christopher Villanueva in Vista July of 2017."It has been three years of trauma and dehumanization," Coronel's Cousin Rocio Zamora said.Zamora urged defunding the Sheriff's Department, and transferring that money to underserved communities, "to transform them to community empowerment zones. The safest communities don't have the most cops they have the most resources."She also demanded police officers be taken out of schools and replaced with counselors.These demands shouted at a time when law enforcement is under the microscope.Law enforcement said Coronel was a documented gang member with a warrant.The morning Coronel died law enforcement said he ran from deputies. Once Villanueva caught up to Coronel, law enforcement said Coronel concealed his hand in his shirt, forcing Villanueva to fire.A witness said Coronel took off his shirt to show he was unarmed.Law enforcement confirmed Coronel was unarmed at the time of his death."Deputy Christopher Villanueva is the most dangerous gang member in Vista. He is the one who shot Sergio Weick 28 plus times," Zamora said.Sergio Weick, 33, was shot and killed August of 2016 by Villanueva.Law enforcement said he was running from deputies, had knives, and threatened deputies, forcing Villanueva to shoot. Law enforcement said he was also a documented gang member with a warrant.Back on the steps of the county administration building, Zamora said they are not anywhere near ending their fight for justice, "three years and we are only growing bigger, we are only getting louder." 1787
