The Pac-12 Conference announced Thursday that they have decided to will play football this season after all.In a press release, the conference said the season would kick off Nov. 6 and no fans will be allowed "at any sporting competition taking place on Pac-12 campus.""Enabling Pac-12 teams would be considered for selection by the CFP," the conference said in the release. "The football schedule will be released in the coming days."The conference also stated that they be implement cardiac monitoring protocols for all student-athletes who test positive of COVID-19."The Pac-12 institutions are also participating in a national COVID-19 cardiac registry which will allow for medical practitioners to monitor closely, and gain greater insight into, potential health outcomes in student-athletes," the conference said. The conference said teams will play seven conference-only games, with the conference championship game scheduled for Dec. 18.“From the beginning of this crisis, our focus has been on following the science, data and counsel of our public health and infectious disease experts,” said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott. “Our agreement with Quidel to provide daily rapid-results testing has been a game-changer in enabling us to move forward with confidence that we can create a safe environment for our student-athletes while giving them the opportunity to pursue their dreams. At the same time, we will continue to monitor health conditions and data and be ready to adjust as required in the name of the health of all.”The conference also announced that men’s and women’s basketball will begin their season on Nov. 25.In August, the Pac-12 decided that they were postponing this season of college football due to the coronavirus pandemic. 1762

The larger number of faster and cheaper COVID-19 tests is offering hope.Researchers at Harvard and Brown say we need about 2 million tests a day of symptomatic people and contacts to fight the spread of the virus. When you add in testing for teachers, students, nursing home residents and staff, the number is about 4.4 million. That's around four times the amount of people being tested per day, according to the COVID Tracking Project.“So, I think it's important to make sure we actually have a goal post about where the country needs to head, because the testing manufacturers need to know what that number looks like in order to make their own business and manufacturing decisions about how to scale,” said Dr. Thomas Tsai with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.Tsai says we don't have enough capacity yet with the rapid antigen tests. He says letting the supply chain drive our guidelines for testing won't get us where we need to be.He says PCR tests that take longer to come back are more accurate, but says the antigen tests are promising because we screen more often.“Think about all the information that we’ve gleaned just from the exposure at the White House in terms of the patterns over the last several days,” said Tsai. “That kind of information, that kind of action should not just be reserved for our politicians and our athletes and celebrities. That's what all Americans deserve in terms of being about to have that information to fight the pandemic.”He says testing by itself only gives you information. It's the actions like masking and distancing that really protect you.He says the federal government needs to make testing cheaper or even free for it to work. 1700

The Mid-American Conference announced on Saturday that it would be canceling the fall season for all sports due to COVID-19 concerns. They become the first league competing at college football's Division I level to cancel their fall season over Covid-19 concerns. The Council of Presidents unanimously voted to cancel the fall season, citing the health and safety of the student athletes, coaches and communities as its top priority. With the MAC’s 12 schools facing a significant financial burden by trying to maintain costly coronavirus protocols, the conference’s university presidents made the decision to explore a spring season for football.MAC schools rely heavily on revenue from playing road games against power conference teams. Most of the power conference football games were canceled when other conferences went to exclusively or mostly in-conference games. Without the out-of-conference games, the strain of trying to implement all that it would take to keep players and staff safe during a pandemic became too much.Football isn't the only sport being canceled. All fall sports in the MAC, including men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's soccer, women's soccer and women's volleyball, will not be played this season.Kent State University sent a message to its student's athletes regarding the MAC's decision to cancel fall sports this season, stating that all student athletes who receive a scholarship will get to keep it and that the school is reaching out to the NCAA to request an additional year of eligibility for those who would like it.Nine of 13 conferences at Division I’s second-tier of football, the Championship Subdivision, have already postponed their fall football seasons, with an eye toward making them up in the spring. The MAC has not announced a decision for winter sports at this time. The conference is working to plan for the 2021 spring semester and said it will continue to consult with its Medical Advisory Panel and will monitor COVID-19 developments as it makes its decision. 2038

The Nasdaq closed in correction on Wednesday, with tech stocks sinking following disappointing results from Texas Instruments and AT&T.The index finished down about 4%. The Dow was down slopped about 600 points Wednesday afternoon.Microsoft (MSFT) will report its results after the closing bell Wednesday and analysts are estimating that the company will report an increase of nearly 15% for both sales and earnings per share, thanks largely to strength in its cloud business.Netflix already kicked off tech earnings season last week when it reported a healthy jump in subscribers. But the party was short-lived for it and fellow FANG stocks Facebook, Amazon and Google.Netflix (NFLX) rose more than 5% the day after its earnings report but has fallen 9% since then."You can't just say tech is going to do great or even that FANG is going to do great. You have to be more selective," said Daniel Morgan, senior portfolio manager with Synovus Trust Company.  974
